Ultimate Fighter Coach Rashad Evans Responds to Quinton Rampage Jackson Retirement

Rashad talks to Maggie Hendricks:

Did you hear what Rampage said about leaving the UFC? What do you think about it?
I think that him coming out and saying stuff like that was a bit premature. He's jumping the gun a little bit. Rampage is a very emotional fighter, a very emotional person, and he just let his emotions take over his rational thinking. I think that him and Dana White just probably need to talk it out, and get past it. I think it's just a breakdown in communication.

Dana's the kind of guy who is going to say what is on his mind, maybe without thinking it through all the way, before he said. Rampage is a hothead, as well. You get two tempers like that, go at each other like that, it makes the situation hard to work through.

What are your thoughts on not fighting him?
I'd be disappointed not to fight him. It would be a good fight, a fun fight, but mostly because he talked trash. He got me really angry, and I want to fight him just because of that alone. It's a fight that people want to see. You get your mind wrapped up, and you get your mind so psyched up about fighting a fighter, and then it doesn't happen, it's disappointing.

That's why I hate making a fight personal. At the end of the day, we're professional athletes, and we get paid to do a job. But when you get to fight someone you really want to fight, that's like a bonus. You'd almost do it for free.

I dont understand this comment from Rashad. He doesnt know Jackson at all. I understand his being upset that the fight seems off, but this is just strange.

My question is.....

Who does Evans fight next with Rampage out of the picture?

I still believe in Ryan Garko...........

My guess would be

Silva since he just beat the crap out of his teammate/buddy Jardine.

I dont know about that one.

I hope it would be good, but I tend to think that Rashad would beat Silva fairly easily.

I noticed that too. I found that stranger than him mistaking his Silvas.

by mythbuster on Sep 23, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why yes, yes i did.

The way i see it is that the only round Silva has ever lost (in the UFC) is against Hendo because of his wrestling, Rashad while not as good as Dan on the ground is pretty damn good himself plus the fact that he is stronger/bigger. I believe that he could hold his own in the stand up with Silva since he is also a great striker and could possibly GnP him for the win.

Hell maybe I’m crazy but Silva is not invincible and I think if we will ever see him lose in the Octagon it would be against Evans.

wanna see how Evans vs Anderson Silva would look like?

see Evans vs. Machida..

And Rashad isn’t that much bigger than Anderson. Evans is a small 205er, Anderson cuts from 225 i think, and is taller and has longer reach.

And yes you are crazy..

by Anton Tabuena on Sep 24, 2009 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Was actually speaking about how much bigger Evans was compared to Dan.

Now yes Evans did lose to Machida and it was a nasty KO but i would have to believe that he and Jackson would deploy a different game plan.

He has more than a strikers chance against Silva and is probably the only person in the UFC (outside of Lesnar and Machida) that could possibly beat him. I stand by what i said and hopefully he will get a shot at him before Silva’s contract is up.

^^

They are both listed as 205 on the UFC site. But I think Hendo can go down, and Rashad can go up so there is a difference. But I agree, it’s not much of one.

I guess, but Rashad's ability

to move up to heavy doesnt really mean he is that much bigger than Hendo. If they met at light heavy I doubt there would be much of a difference sizewise. That just seemed to be his main point that Evans was SOOO much bigger than Dan & that simply isnt true.

My main point wasn’t that he is bigger that Dan, and i didn’t say that he was SOOO much bigger just that he was in fact bigger and stronger, seems that just wants to be your main arguing point.

Hendo made Silva lose his only round in the UFC and in the division where he is the most dangerous, now sure Silva is still extremely dangerous in LHW as well but i like i said he can lose and Rashad could be the only one to make it happen.

I’m hoping that somehow or someway Shogun will beat Machida then Silva will beat Shogun for the title, if that happens then we may just get to see Rashad vs Silva for the title (assuming Couture wont get in the way).

We have...
Machida has the lowest SApM (strikes absorbed per minute) of any fighter in UFC history by a very large margin. Coming into the fight last night, Machida’s SApM was 0.58. After the fight, that dropped to 0.55. The next lowest SApM belongs to Anderson Silva, but it’s not even close. Silva’s SApM is 0.73, even after 25 minutes of not getting hit by Thales Leites. Just as a reminder, Fedor’s SApM is 0.53.

and you are wrong.

People are throwing out Hendo

For the next shot at 205 and it makes the most sense but I wouldnt rule out Rampage coming back just yet.

If Dana cant mend the situation I would expect Lorenzo too and Lorenzo has a way of calming everyone down and making the situation right.

Nobody wants to see Rampage leave and Rampage isnt at a point where he can only make movies so my guess is a deal gets worked out.

Oh!! Now I get it.

My foreign accent would likely draw unwanted attn to me. lol
Good to know.

exactly, but I don’t want to sound like this is a problem everywhere here, it really resides in Rio only. I have American friends here and there is no problem here where I live (Belo Horizonte). I travel frequently throughout Brazil as well, and also see no problem anywhere else.

yeah

I really like Machida and have to acknowledge his skills, if he were fighting anyone else besides Shogun (and hypothetically for the future lil nog), I’d be rooting for him. just can’t go against my boy shogun!

by orcus on Sep 23, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am torn on who I will root for

between Machida & Shogun, If the old Shogun comes back it would be really exciting for the division. I guess I really dont care who wins, I just dont want either to lose badly. I want a WAR!!

would still love to see that fight.

plus IMO Hendo has a better chin the Shad. and Tito… i hate the dude and never really thought much about him. but he is no where close to Hendo’s wrestling. its not just a regular shoot for a double or a single BS…we are talking about Grecko roman clinch.,

by 1WAYtiket on Sep 23, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But what would be the reason for Hendo going back to 205? I just cant see why he would do it, a fight between him and Nate would make the most sense and would help him out way more than moving up and down the UFC divisions.

He doesnt want to fight Nate though

He said if he cant get his rematch with Anderson he wants big fights at 205 and Rashad is a big fight at 205.

I’m with you on Nate/Dan but Dan has no interest in that fight and so I threw out a logical move.

I haven’t heard this rumor. I thought he might fight Silva again.

by 49er16 on Sep 23, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For the next shot at 205 and it makes the most sense

Hendo hasn’t done anything that would entitle him a title shot at 205

by orcus on Sep 23, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok but take Rampage out of the picture

If Rampage is gone and Rua/Machida just fought who is left at 205.

I guess Thiago Silva makes sense but I think Hendo/Rashad is more marketable and so I wouldnt be suprised to see the UFC go that route.

by bigdmmafan on Sep 23, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if you’re saying Hendo vs Rashad than I can see that working, but Hendo going straight in title contention should not happen, he’d need a few wins at 205 first. 205 is still stacked, hell, lil’ nog would be more deserving of a title shot at 205 before Hendo in the current situation.

by orcus on Sep 23, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would have to be Hondo vs Rashad maybe winner gets a shot but b4 that it sets up the real possibility of Couture getting a shot if he beats Vera

by xbuckeyex05 on Sep 23, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm saying Hendo vs. Rashad for the next title shot

The thing you have to remember is marketability plays a huge factor in fights.

I dont think Lil Nog is more deserving then Hendo right now at 205 and he still has to get passed Luiz Cane.

The other thing is you have to remember casual fans dont remember as much as hardcore fans. So to the casual fan you could sell the fact that Hendo took Rampage to a decision, beat Franklin, beat Bisping, and if he beats Rashad because the casual fans wont know or care really that the Bisping fight was at 185.

by bigdmmafan on Sep 23, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

I misread what you said above, I thought you meant Hendo was deserving of a shot at 205 right away. But don’t worry about lil’ nog, he’ll take out cane for sure :P (and then fight one more time for his shot, he’s got the Nog look-a-like thing going for him hehe)

by orcus on Sep 23, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

was wondering when Rashad would be brought up, he loses out the most in this! He won’t see another pay day like this potentially could have been again! What does Rampage think, he’s gonna be the next Will Smith? what a loser!

Shad is screwed. This was his one big fight option. Unless they match him up with Anderson, I dont see a big money fight for a guy who got TKFO’ed in his last outing.

I still don't think andy is a draw

that would be a bad fight for suga, it would go down the same way the machida fight went, with the exception that he would be out longer this time :P

by xbuckeyex05 on Sep 23, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

there were a lot of ppl saying machida hadn’t proved himself and that suga was going to beat him easily. I’m sure if anyone has the patience to go back through the threads they would see that most ppl were saying that.

by orcus on Sep 23, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida was a favorite going into this match. I don’t know about here, I don’t remember anyone saying rashad would beat machida. Many people thought he could do it, they said if there is someone that can beat him, it would be someone like rashad, with good wrestling and good boxing, something like that.

Is it outside the realm of possibility that the UFC could change Randy’s opponent to Rashad? I imagine Rashad would accept the fight now, and it certainly has more marketability.

the biggest loss in all of this for suga is the fact this could have been his break through fight and could have very well made him a draw to the casuals.

but both fights there was no grudge or real hype like there is for the rampage one. I just think that a season and a real grudge will do more form them then wins over chuck. A win over chuck dont really do much for a fighter look at Jardene and Shogun has yet to be seen as a draw

This whole thread is ridiculous!

Rampage and Rashad are going to fight. Dana and Rampage just need to settle on the terms. IMHO.

ESPN's Sports Nation just discussed the Rampage story...

They felt it was stupid for Page to “leave” fighting for acting.

They compared it to Robert De Niro going 4 for 5 in a softball game and then quitting acting to play for the Yankees. I love it!

This isnt exactly comparable,

but Jim Brown did the same thing once he felt he had done all he could do in football. I just feel that it seems like Page’s heart isnt in fighting right now, so I have no problem with him hopefully just taking a sebatical.
