Matt Hughes responds to Koscheck calling him out at UFC 103:

"I find Koscheck calling me out kind of interesting and I actually don’t know why he is doing that. I was used to kids doing this when I was the champ, but as you know I don’t have the belt now and I’m puzzled as to why Koscheck wants to fight me and not the champion in the weight class. I have no interest in fighting Koscheck and, as he was showing everybody, he’s just a kid. As of yet, the UFC has never come to me and asked me to fight him."

damn i hate matt hughes. calling another guy a kid because he wants to fight the future HOF matt hughes. koscheck knows he cant fight GSP right now. 2 wins and a loss to GSP in recent memory…

The kid comment was pretty dumb agewise,

but UFC wise he is right. He is basically retired so why the hell is Koscheck calling him out? I understand wanting a big fight, but if he has any aspirations in the division he would not be thinking about Hughes at all.

He is calling him out because beating up Hughes still means something to the casual fan. If he goes out and destroys him it can do nothing but help his career.

If Hughes was truly active

I would agree, but he is not.

It was just kind of weak move IMO.

He knows Hughes is done so it is just a puss move to call out someone that offers no threat. Maybe Kos should have ran his mouth when he first came into the UFC & I would have been cool with it.

How is Koscheck acting like a kid calling Hughes out? He is trying to fight someone that would put him in a position to get a title shot

I have no interest in seeing Matt Hughes fight anyone quite actually. Though I do get pleasure out of seeing champions from his era being KO’d.

This does not interest me in the least.

And what about seeing an old past his prime getting KO’d gives you pleasure?

The first thing that comes to my mind?

Destruction of Generation A’s Alphas generally meets with much approval of generation B. God makes man, man destroys God, Man makes iPod, etc., etc.

Nice try,
Though I’m 35 and have been an MMA fan since the beginning. I just really disliked the Chuck, Matt, Rich era of the UFC.

by Madskillz on Sep 23, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t associate biological age with fan age. A fan can b 13 but obsessively following the sport, been through all the highs and lows he can handle and burns out, having already seen hundreds of fights, and dozens of fighters rise and fall.

But a guy our age might not watch as much due to RL, or he’s only just found out and starting to obsessively backtrack, etc. So I think the generation aspect is related to who was in “your” heyday regardless of age.

So an example could be you grew up with the sport and saw them as Alphas who never deserved the position they held but you had to hear about them endlessly. But that’s fictional and clearly has nothing to do with you since I don’t know you from Adam. Just an idea bout fandom in general.

by asa on Sep 23, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reason I would want to see this fight is to see Hughes push Koscheck back into using his wrestling base which I doubt would even happen.

Koscheck is too concerned with becoming a stand-up fighter that he has forgone his wrestling.

by SanDiegoMMA.net on Sep 23, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

hughes still talks about getting another title shot, sounds like he wants an easier route, or is he just satisfied to re-rematching trigg, hallman and serra just to get a paycheck? why wouldn’t he want to fight koscheck?, if he wants back in the title picture, which he’s claimed recently.

by bdw on Sep 23, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you really think he wants back in the title picture as long as GSP is champ?

I think they brought Hughes back exactly for some of the fights you mentioned or for up & comers. I would have been all for this fight like 3 years ago, but Kos was quiet during that time.

It was about a year ago that I heard Kos say he’d be interested in fighting Hughes, the other pre-eminent wrestler in the division. Granted neither compare to GSP, but Kos has a good point and I don’t blame him. All those years Hughes’ wrestling was elite and no one could compare to it. Kos wants to see how he does. Who could blame him, and it’s not like Hughes is completely washed up. I don’t even think he’s declined that much, he’s just been surpassed by superior younger talent. Who else would Kos call out? He’s not going to get a title shot until he wins a few more bouts.

Plus, Kos is a pretty big name as well. Definitely in the top 5 or so… at least that’s how I see it.

by Dooda on Sep 24, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Hughes was still done a year ago.

I would have respected this from Kos about 3 years ago, now not so much.

While this fight wouldn’t be very competitive, it definitely has the potential of being a decent main event. Hughes is still a big draw and it could easily be marketed as the old guard looking to shut up one of these young load-mouth kids. I don’t think they’d have trouble coming up with a name for the event: UFC 106: Respect Your Elders; or UFC 106: You Kids Get Off My Lawn.

Also – I would gladly take any opportunity to see Matt Hughes take a beating.

Hughes is clearly ducking Koscheck. Unless it title fight, we’re going to see Hughes duck top competition.

Kos' personality is so generic

I thought even his call-out was boring. Unless Silva actually books the fight, most call-outs and match requests are lame as hell.

Mike Swick explained it on the Larry Pepe show...

He said basically all the other top ranked welterweights are booked for fights, and none of the AKA welters have fought hughes (Fitch, Kos, and Swick), so they’re all going to try to get a fight with him. He said after Kos won on Saturday night he and Fitch yelled for Kos to call out Hughes.

I don’t really think there’s anything to it other than that. Listen to the interview for yourselves…it’s pretty good actually…

I hope Hughes saying he has no interest in a fight with Kos simply means he’s not actively chasing the fight instead of him not wanting to fight Kos at all. If it’s the latter then who could possibly interest him if a top five WW doesn’t?

What about Serra?

Is he still fighting? Maybe Kos should call him out instead then. Or if these stupid AKA guys would just fight each other then we could clear up the problem of 3 of the 5 top WW not wanting to fight each other and get a real contender. I think Kos-Fitch, Kos-Swick, and Fitch-Swick all sound like excellent fights.

by IWillPartyHard on Sep 23, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah,

it sound really silly to hear that the AKA guys were all sitting there telling him to call out Hughes. That makes this even more puss to me. Why not just call out Royce Gracie too?

Personally, I’d like to see Rumble put him to sleep.

If he wants to make a run at GSP, he will have to start with an “up-and-comer” like Rumble, or a “middle-tier” guy like Koscheck.

Either that, or he fights Trigg in a retirement match. Just accepting a Trigg fight would show that he’s not really contending for a title.

What a Fashion Don’t! That’s like your dick wearing socks with sandals.

Calling wrestlers out is so outdated...

That’s why I liked Brock when he opened his mouth and inserted his foot at his last fight. It was ENTERTAINING.

Listening to other fighters be PC and just say : “I want that belt”, “It was a tough fight”, “Let’s hug and sing Kumbaya”…..

It makes me want to puke.

by BNTHIS on Sep 23, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Well maybe not “wrestlers”, unless you only count Mr. Carwin.

But UFC Fighters in General. Freudian Slip back there.

by BNTHIS on Sep 23, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

My two cents
I have no interest in fighting Koscheck

Either Matt is scared he’s gonna get beat, or is trying to leave the UFC with a win, either way his comments make him appear like he’s afraid to face someone who might just be a better wrestler then him.

by proflex on Sep 24, 2009 7:25 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

After the performance Kos put on Trigg at 103, and Hughes lackadaisical performance against Serra I don’t think Matt can take this fight. A win for Kos puts him right back at the top of the pecking order, and keeps Matt struggling to stay a reputable name in a divison not so saturated with amazing talent. If Matt wins, so what, your supposed to beat a guy with hair like that.
