TUF 10: The Ultimate Fighter Live Discussion (Episode 2)

Get up! Get up! Don't get taken down! Submit him!
OK, so Quinton Jackson isn't the best of coaches. Picking Kimbo Slice with his first pick looks a little suspect as well. But hell, it should provide some damn good entertainment.
In a surprise only to Islamic terrorists burrowed deep in Afghani caves, episode one saw the unveiling of Kimbo as the final cast member. You could see the mouths of the other cast members beginning to water.
During the first training session, we see ex-NFL player Marcus Jones completely blitzed by MMA training. It's not a good sign when an Internet street brawler lets you lean on him after a training session.
In the first fight of the season, Team Rashad's Jon Madsen ran all over Team Rampage's Abe Wagner. Unable to stop the takedown, Wagner took some brutal Madsen elbows while pinned up against the fence. Madsen opened up a cut so large the doctor saw Wagner's skull in the locker room.
Episode two is being advertised as the beginning of the "road to Kimbo." Is this the start of Zuffa and Spike teasing Kimbo's first fight or will Rampage make a wise choice and take control of Kimbo's fate? Will the two coaches be able to keep their feud under control? Will Roy Nelson eat Darrill Schoonover and prove to be uncoachable?
Join us here at Bloody Elbow and find out!

I have a feeling that Big Country and Rashad may have one thing in common and that is that they are coming in to the show underestimated and basically counted out.
Yes, time flies. And where did it leave you? Old too soon...smart too late. - Mike Tyson
I know that a lot of fighters aren’t hardcore fight fans and just watch their friends, but you think someone has to know who Nelson is and what he’s capable of.
True.
I have only seen IFL like twice, all the UFC stuff & Strikeforce only when Carano fought Cyborg & I knew who he was. It just seems like normal conversation that would occur if you were an MMA fighter.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

after recent events doesnt it kind of seem like Page just said eff the show & picked whoever he wanted w/o giving real thought to skills? I may be crazy, but I cant get that out of my head. I keep replaying the picks & it just seemed so ridiculous even then & moreso now.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
Eh. I just don’t think he’s a terribly good coach.

Well coaching-wise I for sure agree with you.
But what about the picks? I dont remember him doing that bad of a picking job the last time he was on the show, or was there a lot more talent so he could not mess up as bad? I love a good grassy knoll theory so forgive me if I seem crazy.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
cb “quick tap” dalloway was his 1rst choice, although with guys like jt money, the pickens were pretty slim. his picks weren’t so bad as were his match-ups, and coaching style. ehbow! ehbow! kinda like picking a miltech wrestler against a figher with weak wrestling. he also guaranteed his purse if he lost to forrest(don’t think forrest has seen a cent of that money). he didn’t come off so good on that show and then lost to “can’t bust a grape” forrest. i think he’s having “deja-vu”. :-)
There is a difference between saying “I’ll put my whole purse on it” (which is obviously an offer to make a bet) and saying I’ll give you my purse if the fight goes to decision, guaranteed. Forrest never accepted or even said anything, if I remember correctly.

Totally off topic but...
“The Voice” shouted you out on this mornings Sengoku show as one of the best MMA journalists. He gave props to BE too, didn’t know if you had seen that or not.
I’ve heard about it, I tried to find it earlier to no avail.

Rampage knows it doesn’t matter if he’s a good coach or not.
To him, TUF is about the buildup to selling PPVs. He learned the power of TUF to increase his popularity after the last time he was on. The more antics he gets into, the more people will buy the PPV and his pay will go up (provided he fights).
Of course this sounds stupid after he’s found happiness with a new career, but the coach who wins the most during filming is the one who wins the coaches challenge of the way through the season. He could go 0-8 and not care.
Kimbo seems like a pretty cool guy
However, all I can think about when listening to Rampage’s team coaching is the the Tiki/Lawler bout.

about (not) fighting Randy
“That was a match-up that I didn’t think was good for me,” Evans said. “He’s 46 years old and coming off back-to-back losses as a heavyweight, and I feel like beating him wouldn’t move me up the rankings as a light heavyweight. Plus I would have had to take that fight on short notice, in England, and it felt like I’m being punished because Rampage took a movie.”
You don't look like a Tanaka.
I was really surprised that he said he would’ve gotten the next title shot if he beat Rampage. I don’t think he’s at any kind of level to get one win and be thrown back into a title shot. He can’t be seriuh…

No one that good has been on the show in like 5 seasons.
This just highlights a great reason why these veterans shouldnt be thrown onto this show. Theres a different relationship between a rookie and his camp, and a veteran and his camp. Almost anywhere Roy walks into he would expect to take some kind of leadership role but here they just expect him to shut up like he didnt know what he was doing.
I disagree 1 million percent.
If GSP showed up at xtreme Couture to train i’d expect him to do what people said and not be an asshole in general, and I bet Couture would expect the same as well.
When you aren’t with your camp, you aren’t the big dog anymore. That’s doubly true for TUF. It doesn’t matter what you did before, everyone who isn’t a coach is on the same page
I really just dont see how he was being an asshole. Its one thing if hes being disruptive. I think hes just trying to train in a way that he knows will make him successful. This show puts you in a weird spot where you and your training partners are all competing for the same thing so it makes sense that he is looking out for himself.
I understand your point but i think the problem is the show puts both the coaches and the fighters in a weird relationship that doesnt exist anywhere else and both of them are reacting differently.
I gotta agree, if the coaches aren’t willing to compromise I feel that shows a big lack of leadership. If it was something serious, then have at it…but…ugh.

Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva “likely” @ UFC 108
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/9/23/1052441/rashad-evans-vs-thiago-silva

If a fight does take place Rampage will be coming off a long lay off and Rashad will have most likely fought 1 time by the time he gets Rampage.
Thats a big fucking dude

Interesting take.
rampage should of picked kimbo he had to win both fights to keep control and you know rashad and greg jackson will pick a jujitsu guy or wrestler to face him. if he really liked kimbo he would of picked him the easiest match up so he could get a win and some confidants.

The only way he could have avoided that is by picking Roy in one of the first two fights.
it would be a little too much strategery to sacrifice one of his weakest fighters to roy, but I don’t think you should really be doing that in the first 2 fights.
Well, the other way to avoid it would be to pick Kimbo in one of the first two fights, against somebody less daunting than Roy. Or not lose the first two fights and keep control over matchmaking.
They said at the beginning that Rashad gets to pick the 3rd fight no matter what.
Putting Kimbo first would be ridiculous. Rampage would be stupid to put Kimbo in that early because Kimbo needed some real training more than anyone else.
I thought Dana said Rampage had to win both of the first two fights to keep control not that he lost it no matter what.
No, they said if Rampage won the first two fights he kept control.

Not showing any fight footage confims that Kimbo loses. The entire fight is spent with Roy in top position.
Conversely
The fact that they haven’t shown any footage of Nelson except to establish that he may or may not be a team player might indicate that they don’t care to build him up.
It’s a bit like Kremlinology.
I really do hope Roy dominates though.

Can anyone give a reasonable defense

McSweeney did land the only two solid strikes of round 2 though.

Did anyone else forget positoining & sub attempts ??
That was a BS decision..
Sure it was a terrible fight, but in all honesty, those leg kicks dont outweigh the fact that Wes had the only TD’s in the fight.. Had went for multiple sub attempts with the kimura x 2 & RNC.. Not to mention staying in dominate position when on the ground..

Yea I just didn’t see how McSweeney won the first round on any judges card. Still if it had went to three Wes might of had a heart attack out there.
McSweeney won the first round on my card.
Wes threw wild punches that missed, got a takedown, and did nothing at all with it.
McSweeney landed some good leg kicks.

I get a feeling Kimbo has the first upset against Roy..
Roy doesn’t seem like his head is there right now.. Could be tricky editing or could be an actual case.. I just get a feeling that Kimbo beats him to the punch and gets the upset win..

I will be infinitely disappointed to hear that he was right—Roy Nelson doesn’t have the physique for MMA. (regardless if either of those things can actually be proven in a one bout)

Wes Shivers GOT ROBBED!!!
Unless low kicks are worth more on the Judges scorecards than Takedowns, Wes got Jobbed by the pathetic judging.
McSweeny had NOTHING against Shivers and ate some hard right and left hands from Wes AND got taken down 3 to 4 times by him.
Wes Shivers won that fight if this were the UFC right now. But I think the one who judged the fight was one man : DANA WHITE.
by BNTHIS on Sep 23, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
if anything got robbed it was Wes Shivers’ gas tank …… because it just wasn’t there
The Power of One
I agree its not the worst decision at all but I think Shivers did more then enuff to win the first the 2nd was close but from what I remember McSweeny only had those two solid shots. I should of went to a 3rd round atleast.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. Well, maybe not as strongly as you, but nearly.
McSweeny cracked Shivers with one really good jab that knocked Shivers for a loop. He had a guillotine that was not particularly close – Shivers did nothing to defend it other than wait for McSweeny’s arm to gas out, which it did – and to me was negated by the rear naked choke attempt(s) by Shivers. Not that the RNC was close for Shivers, but it was about as close as the guillotine.
Both fighters had embarrassingly poor cardio. McSweeny’s was slightly less embarrassing, but for a guy with “hundreds of kickboxing matches” (or whatever claim they made on the show) to strike with such mediocrity and be countered effortlessly by a guy who simply does not have the same level combat sports experience is pretty bad. I was certain that Wes “Keepin’ My Hands on My Hips” Shivers was going to catch a head kick, and despite a few sloppy attempts by McSweeny, Shivers, while totally gassed, was able to avoid the high stuff in favor of a few low kicks. Those low kicks were hard, don’t get me wrong, but for me they weren’t enough to swing the scoring in McSweeny’s favor in light of Shivers takedowns, submission attempts (plural as compared to McSweeny’s lone attempt), counters, and damage done.
It was, to me, a bad decision, but not an all-time horrendous robbery. Either way, neither McSweeny nor Shivers have any chance of doing anything in the UFC.

If that’s the case, then I am definitely looking forward to see how improved Kimbo has gotten. Or in other words, DOES HE HAVE A GROUND GAME NOW INSTEAD OF JUST THE USUAL STREET-CERTIFIED MAYHEM?
It doesnt matter if he has a ground game or not
Roy won a grappling tournament against top competition. Kimbo has none of that experience and a couple weeks of training with Rampage wont change that.

True but the thing is that if what you stated is true regarding his new contract, don’t you think that he might have….you know…..advanced further than Roy?
That’s why I’m saying that he might have a ground game…
It might not even involve the ground at all
It could just be a stand up war and he catches Roy. Thats the only thing i could see happening and being impressive. Or a decision win.

McSweeny = more experienced fighter
Shivers = no experience

While I dont agree with the decision.. These guy’s were hardly veterans !!
McSweeny was 3-3 going into that fight.. I’d hardly call that veteran status..
Shivers was 2-0.. again I wouldn’t be claiming veteran status here either..
It was a bogus decision, but hardly Dana’s doing or showing favoritism

Dana White has nothing at all to do with the judges decisions, those come from the athletic commission judges not UFC employees. The refs and the judges are supplied by the athletic commissions (even for TUF) and the UFC has no control over who is sent to do the judging or what decision they make. Heck Dana is normally the first to say if a decision stinks or if he thinks a ref did a bad job.
Nothing at all about that was rigged, hell if they were going to rig it they would of rigged it towards the former pro football player with the million dollar build not the crotchety British dude who is 3-3 in his unimpressive MMA career fighting on small shows. Heck I was surprised McSweeny even made the show.
Why bother. Shivers arguably won the first round, but the second round was clearly McSweeney’s, and Shivers could barely stand he was so tired. A third round would have been 5 leg kicks from McSweeney with the rest of the round featuring two completely gassed fighters standing on opposite sides of the cage, and then McSweeney would have won.
Rigging this fight would have been pointless.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

man….Was Sylvia in his prime, a GOOD fighter?
I admit I’m not much of a Hardcore UFC fan. PLease enlighten me.
He was a damn good fighter when he actually used to work to put guys away instead of cruising to decisions.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
So that means that all Shivers needs is more practice and PLENTY OF CARDIO WORK ’cause he desperately needs it.
I really see Shivers as having potential ’cause of his size and he just has the “LOOK” that says “here is a man who can kick your ass”. Marketability, people.
McSweeny is okay but No one really cares much for British fighters here in the States, anyway….unless it’s every one watching Bisping get Hendo’ed into next year.
So you were THAT buffed and ripped when you smoked?
Wes is in pretty damn good shape. Don’t know if he smokes but if he doesn’t, he better not start ’cause he would be dead right now at this point.
I’d also suggest the same from McSweeny as well….
Man I was peeved that they gave McSweeny the first round of that fight but honestly Wes was done, he was so gassed they had a time just getting him back to his corner. I can imagine even an out of shape stoner could of finished him off at that point, just jump at him a couple of times and watch him go down huffing and puffing and clutching his chest.
So the year of bullshit decisions continues, honestly it’s like the later the year gets the worst the screwjobs become. Somebody get these guys some fucking glasses or something because it’s gettting embarrasing the way these mma judges keep fucking over fighters. Wes dominated that fight and the fact that McSweeney someway got the nod is going to just wonder what other bullshit decisions we are going to get on TUF this year.
just watched the fight on youtube...
What a ridiculously bad decision. I could maybe see them electing to take it to a third round.
It seems like the judges made Wes’s being winded and moving backwards a lot a much bigger factor than they should have. But it’s not like McSweeney was aggressively pursuing him whenever Wes would create space.
Say what you will about Kimbo, but there’s no way his fights are going to be that boring.
I am absolutely dumbfounded how Mcsweeney got that decision.
How do you spend the entire first rd doing the running man & win the rd? Not that the 3rd would have been anything spectacular, but Shivers deserved a 3rd round.

Wes Shivers
has a lot more potential than his opponent did. At this stage, he is behind in cardio and a ground game… but with a year of good coaching and training he could end that fight in the first minn. I wish Dana would pull him aside and say “go to this camp, train, come see me in a year” His strength/reach/reflexes where amazing. He didnt even defend, just jab and move. Very slick
Just managed to catch the episode… holy crap the fight was terrible. Never seen two guys gas that bad in the same fight. McSweeney looked like he was scared to engage and Shivers lost his cardio completely during the first round. I really hope the quality of the fights picks up.
McSweeney might have won but he’ll get eaten alive in the next round.

Don’t see how Jebus considers people voicing their opinions about a subpar fight hating. I don’t see anyone saying “I could do better.” or “who did he blow to get in the house.” Those are spiteful, jealous remarks. People merely pointed out that it was a poor display. You have one guy, literally with his hands on his hips and at one point using cage to catch his breath. You have another guy that supposedly has had years of kickboxing matches and fails to finish an opponent WHO IS HUFFING AND PUFFING WITH HIS HANDS DOWN! I mean McSweeny’s corner was screaming for him to engage. It’s one thing if you’re fighting Lyoto or Anderson and you’re hesitant to get caught by a counter punch, but when you’re opponent is leaning against the cage to get a breather, use that kickboxing of yours to at least make him fight for those breaths of air.
In a way, that was worse than the first fight. Sure the first fight was boring, but at least Madsen stuck to a game plan, used his takedowns and tried to pound out a win. McSweeny literally would throw a punch or kick then back up not like a fighter calculating his next move, but like those kids in school that would hit someone sitting down and run before the guy can get up.
I think I will be the lone actual hater here and say that while my cardio’s not great, I’ve yet to look that bad in any grappling match or my one time inside the cage so far. And I’m about the same weight and several inches shorter. That was just wow. Was it nerves? Were the lights too bright? Logos too slippery? Enlighten me, because had that been me, I may not have knocked Wes out, but I damn sure would have lit him up every time he dropped his hands.
