Shooto 154-pound Champion Takashi Nakakura relinquished his title on Tuesday, officially declaring that he will be unable to defend the belt anytime soon due to a detached retina suffered during his May non-title loss to Takanori Gomi. Though the eye injury was initially rumored to be career-ending, Nakakura said he hopes to return at some point in 2010.

Shooto's #1 and #3 ranked 154-pounders, Willamy Chiquerim and Kenichiro Togashi, will vie for the vacant title at Vale Tudo Japan '09 on October 30th.

Strangely, even though 5×5 fights will be tested out for VTJ 09, I think the title fight will be 3×5.

Yup. But at least it’ll be the last of its kind if we’re to believe Lion Takeshi. He basically came right out and said, “yeah, next year title fights will be 5 rounds!” at the presser for VTJ 09. That got me pretty pumped for the future.

I’ll take whatever the top star at STG Yokohama says as truth, seeing as the gym is owned by Sustain promoter Kazuhiro Sakamoto… who basically is the hand behind the ISC.
