Frank Trigg: "If the UFC Drops Me, I Will Retire"
37-year-old veteran Frank Trigg lost to a much younger fighter in Josh Koscheck this past weekend, and it made Dana White consider dropping him from the UFC:
![]()
"I think Trigg is one of those guys (like Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic). These (other) guys are young and explosive. There's just a whole other level of talent out there, man, and that's the way it works. That's the way this business is."
So, will he give it some thought before terminating the contract?
"I doubt it," White shrugged. "He got smoked tonight."
Frank Trigg says that if that's the case, he will hang it up:
If they say I'm done, I'm done. If the UFC cuts me, I'm done fighting. I don't have the strength or determination to go fight in the minor leagues anymore. I've done it before.
I didn't come back here for one fight ... so I could say I retired as a UFC fighter. I came back to make a run at a title fight. I want to fight. But if they're done with me, that's it.
He also sent a few tweets on this:
I think there is a mistake. IF the UFC drops me I will retire, as of right now I'm still with the UFC looking for my next fight... If I can't fight for the UFC, I will move on to something else.
UPDATE: It looks like Frank Trigg won't be dropped after all, and he could even be fighting on the rumored Australia card on Feb 2010:
"They said I'll get one more shot, another fight, to prove I belong here. If I win, they've got to keep me around. If I lose and it's back-to-back losses, they'll probably drop me, rightfully so."
"I'm ready to fight, and I want to fight. But I just want to fight in the UFC."

Trigg is still listed on the UFC.com… so that’s promising.

Dana basically said he was cutting Trigg via the MMAJunkie.com post. He even was quoted after the fight as saying he wouldn’t think twice about it.

Yeah Dana did say that, but maybe since it isn’t official yet, maybe someone else on the UFC brass could change Dana’s mind…
Frank is 37 and he lost to one of the best WWs in the world.. There are still lots of interesting matches they could make for Trigg. I say give him another chance. They usually cut people after two loses anyway.

It’s not that he lost, it’s how he lost. In Dana’s words, he got “smoked.” He’s probably paid too much to be smoked by every legit contender.

I think he should get another fight in the UFC, but from the sounds of it… Trigg thinks he’s done as well in my mind.

I'm not sure what Trigg has left to offer
other than a semi-name for up & comers to go thru, but I wouldn’t be opposed to him sticking in the UFC.

Bye Trigg
I can’t see you fighting in the UFC again, but it would be cool if they hired you as some sort of commentator or sideline reporter (or whatever the hell). I think he does a good job at that kind of stuff.

Man sad to see him go out on a fight like that if this indeed the case. I for one would like to see him be given a couple more chances against lower level competition at WW but only to close out his career. On a side note I think you read my mind in terms of keeping Trigg for some type of commentator. We all know the UFC wouldnt release Goldberg or Rogan but I too would LOVE to see Trigg start a new commentating position in the UFC as “side line reporter”.

This makes me sad. I think Trigg could definitely be a valuable guy to have around as a WW gatekeeper. If getting “smoked” by Josh Koscheck is grounds for release, why is Zenko still hanging around? I say renegotiate the guy’s contract (if Trigg is indeed being paid potential-headliner money) but don’t fire the guy.

Dana, the WW division isn’t exactly the kind of division you can just boot someone out of when they lose to a guy like Josh Koshcheck. Trigg’s loss is getting blown out of proportion here, it’s not like he was dominated from start to finish…it was similar to Vitor/Franklin, being that there was alot of feeling out and the fist time they truly exchanged, the loser got clipped, was dazed, and got finished in the first round.
I say give Trigg someone like Marcus Davis, or another gatekeeper and let Trigg create his own destiny, rather than toss him after losing to someone who has been KO’ing people like it’s nobodies business as of late.

I think it is more the fact of where Trigg is in his career
more than just losing to Koscheck. But getting smoked by Koscheck & not really offering any competition probably didnt help his cause. And its not like Trigg figures into the WW landscape anyway. I like Trigg & would not mind him staying around, but it doesnt matter much.

No reason for either. Kos was a tough fight for anyone. Let’s see Trigg vs Hughes yet again on a UFN.

That fight
does nothing for me.
Like someone else proposed, Trigg/ Baroni would be a good fight, as would a scrap against someone like Serra or Hallman (if he loses to Howard). The UFC has built up quite the senior circuit in the WW and (undersized) HW’s divisions.

Trigg already smashed Hallman twice
Once in the WFA, and then again in the UFC when Hallman demanded a rematch…no need to complete the trilogy.

They can still use him to build up other fighters. Trigg will go at least 0-3 before they cut him I think.

Why?
I’ve talked to the guy before, he’s pretty chill. Sure, he knows how to ham it up in front of the camera, but he knows how to hype a fight.
Koscheck is a stud, and Frank looked pretty competitive prior to getting zapped by Josh’s right hand from hell

This story appears to be false.
Jeff Cain, of MMA Weekly, is reporting that the story is false:
I guess I should have posted on this thread immediately after that false report went up. Trigg is not being cut by the UFC. Dana never said that and that is why he isn’t quoted as saying it. Trigg is not being cut by the UFC and I can promise you that 100%. The story is wrong on multiple levels.

Yeah, and then he was asked if he’d think about it later… and he replied with a negative answer… something along the lines of “Probably not, he got smoked.”

Cutting Trigg makes no sense at all. He has a name and personality, and can easily be used as a tool to elevate weltwerweights like Anthony Johnson.

agreed, he’s not my favorite fighter but there are good fights for him in the UFC

Right, plus why would they sign him just to give him a fight they knew he was probably going to lose and then cut him immediately after? Doesn’t make sense.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
