Some thoughts on UFC 103
Great night of fights!!! I'm glad I didn't sleep on this event. Coming out of it though I had a few thoughts.
1. Junior Dos Santos has some incredible standup would love to see him fight Cheick Kongo a battle between two strikers and it would be a moderate test of Dos Santos' ground game
2. Some great lightweight fights tonight and saw some great prospects surface would love to see Efrain Escudero vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
3. Paul Daley's standup is ridiculous the UFC should really set up Daley vs. Thiago Alves
4. The UFC needs to figure out what they are going to do with Rich Franklin, Joe Rogan even made the suggestion that 195 is the best weight for him. What the hell is that all about put him in an actual division.
5. Finally Vitor Belfort is as fast as ever but he's definitely gonna need some head movement if he's going to fight Anderson Silva.
Again a great night of fights let me know what the BE community thinks

Junior lacked alot of killer instinct people presumed he had. A couple of times CroCop backed up in a straight line, or was hurt from a body shot, he didn’t really capitalize. He fought well, and showed he could take a hit, but he needs more experience. I’d like to see him fight Gonzaga personally.

He was trying to finish CroCop everytime,
But he’s just a tough ol’ bastard so it was hard. He had killer instinct throughtout the entire fight.

Lacked killer instinct!?!
Man, this is the first time he has been out of the first round. Not to mention, he finished the fight. The worst thing you can do against a dangerous striker is to rush in when you think he is hurt.

Dos Santos, in my opinion, should fight a wrestler next or just someone with good takedowns. So far, he has fought two fighters (Struve and Werdum) whose strengths are BJJ (but don’t have the strongest takedowns to take the fight to the mat) and a striker (CroCop). I do see a bright future for Dos Santos.

would make it look like Cain/Kongo all over again :)

JDS trains with Black House. He’s gotta be a lot better than Kongo on the ground.

What on Earth makes anyone
think that Dos Santos-Kongo would ever hit the mat? Kongo may shoot once or twice, but it for sure wont stay there.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
I disagree
He was always looking for the finish. He showed maturity and composure by not rushing in, and he was respecting CCs power at all times, but he didn’t lack killer instrinct
Dos Santos vs either Gonzaga or Kongo would be sweet, but Mirko is officially irrelevant. He looked so uncomfortable in there.
Poor Franklin just can’t handle anybody who is a better striker. There are few guys out there who are clearly better strikers, but each one would beat Rich 10/10 times.
Also, I thought all the stoppages were justified.
The only one I think could have go on was the Kampmann one, but he took alot of unanswered damage. People only focus on those last punches, but before he had his back to the cage he was eating some hard shots as well…
I really didn’t see it ending any other way than Kampmann looking like a corpse on the mat for a minute or so. But you can’t leave the chance for a “What if?” in a finish, because it’s a very real possibility he could have dropped for a single leg or something and saved himself. Probable? No. Possible? Yes.

yeah man Martin is one of my favorites
To see him losing the fight against someone he could’ve easily submitted makes me furious!
Martin was cocky trying to stand up with Paul.. smh
Not to mention, because of this loss Martin is back of the line @ the title shot

Thats my beef with the decision. It was very possible that Kampman could have recovered. He has a great chin and awesome recovery. On top of that, his ground game is really good and I dont know much about Daleys ground game. Even if we assume that Daley would have knocked Kampmann down, he would then still have to be able to finish once there which is often easier said that done. That stoppage was terrible.
Kampmann ate three straight shots to the chin at the end and his eyes were practically in the back of his head. He wasn’t going anywhere but to the hospital.
Nobody would argue he wasnt rocked, he was. But he wasnt even knocked down. When the ref jumped in, Kampmans hands were up in front of his face to defend himself. I’ve seen fighters in that position literally dozens of times and the ref has never stopped it. Why this time?
Daley said his eyes rolled back a few times. If the lights go out, the fight is over. It doesn’t matter if your legs are still working or not.
It looks weird to see a fight stopped when the guy is standing, but that looked fine to me.
Legs and arms are working – he was still intelligently defending himself. I would bet that Daley would have finished him anyway, but I am not a fan of pre-emptive stoppages.
I have to agree.
Does anyone remember Marty’s fight with McFedries? He ate some huge shots, was definitely hurt but got the fight to the ground and choked him out with an arm triangle. Granted, that probably wasn’t going to happen here, but you have to let the fighters finish the fight themselves IMO.
Daley was the most coherent fighter I have ever heard in a post fight interview, and he didn’t even seem winded at all. Combining that with the accuracy and power of his punches and how Kampman wasn’t stopping any of the shots, I have to believe his statement that he if things had kept going he would have ended up seriously hurting Kampman.

Don’t blame the ref for doing his job. Blame Kampmann for not fighting back. If you just cover up, the fight is probably going to get stopped.

Check it out!!
Intelligent defense? Weathering the storm?
Yeah Kampmann probably would have lost, but that was a ridiculous stoppage.
Ridiculous stoppage?
Don’t think so.
Martin looked like he had no idea where he was when Daley was throwing bombs on him. And immediately when the ref stopped it he looked relieved of not getting punched in the face anymore, and when he finally came to then he was questioning the ref.

He was standing, with his hands up defending himself. Not sure many people do that when they are KO.
Nah, Kampmann was on a one-way trip
Daley showed no signs of slowing down, and Kampmann was turning into a stationary target. He was about two shots away from being Zenko’d (as Rogan pointed out).
HW match-ups
Dos Santos win, they’d be the #1 contender at HW (Rothwell would still need a fight or two). Meantime I’d pit Nogueira against the winner of Mir-Kongo. The winner of that fight would be next in line for a title shot.
Take 2
I’d match Dos Santos against the winner of Velasquez-Rothwell. If Dos Santos wins, or Velasquez wins, that would be the #1 contender at HW (Rothwell would still need a fight or two).
Meantime I’d pit Nogueira against the winner of Mir-Kongo. The winner of that fight would be next in line for a title shot.
Kongo’s fancied himself a ground and pound guy on occasion.

Not really.
