GSP, Maia and Marquardt won't be at ADCC 2009

"Mike Chiapetta twitter - GSP's manager told me a couple weeks back that he's not competing at ADCC."

Sherdog: Are you planning to go to the next Abu Dhabi Combat Club event?
Maia: No. Now, I’m just planning a 10-day vacation...

"Josh Gross twitter - Just finished an interview with Nate Marquart for my podcast. He says he might not be in ADCC either."

"As of now, Maia, St. Pierre, and Marquardt are still listed on adccbarcelona.com, which seems like blatant false advertising."

Ah, I saw that list a few days ago and was a little excited, but not a big deal since I never expected them to be there in the first place (being UFC independent contractors and all).

Training for ADCC would hinder their MMA training, and lord knows Maia needs to do some work on his striking.

darn, i was hoping to see how GSP would fare with pure grapplers. i personally think he would get schooled.

why would he get schooled?

He’s a black belt, who trains with bigger, stronger black belts, under other better blackbelts, to fight some of the best black belts in the world.

Because they aren’t just “pure” grapplers. They’re professional grapplers and being a black belt against a world-class black belt might as well be the difference between a pure white belt and regular black belt. We are talking world’s apart in ability and expertise.

Yup, there are hundreds, maybe a thousand bjj blackbelts. That doesn’t mean any of them can beat any other.

Hmm Randy vs Jacare is a decent example of a “pure white belt” holding his own against a world class black belt.

I guess you missed his last ADCC appearance, where he got flying armbarred in under a minute.

yup. insert foot in mouth.

Maybe they heard there wouldn’t be any chicks there and bailed.

bummer

I was looking forward to a possible Maia/Marquardt grappling match… even after Maia got KTFO.

gsp wouldnt have won anyway.
but the website was updated and it said

Georges St. Pierre/OUT
July 30, 2009 — ADCC BARCELONA

Damian would have been a great addition seeing as how he truly is one of the best jiujitsu fighters on the planet today, not mma jiujitsu but BJJ.
but GSPs division will be exiciting! it has Kron Gracie, Pablo Popovitch, Marcelo, Bill cooper, to name a few..

cant wait for this one! wish it was in jersey!

maia already won the adcc anyway, so no huge loss

by judonerd on Sep 2, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Maia vs. Nate in a JJ match would have been sweet.

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

with a few of the ‘star’ names dropped it does take the shine off the event for the MMA lovers, but it is still a who’s-who roster of people competing.

yeah, i know, the best grapplers in the world (minus maia) are still there..

but honestly, I’m a bigger MMA fan than a grappling fan, and i would’ve loved to see guys like marquardt and GSP compete with the best of the best..
