UFC 103 Results: Martin Kampmann Can't Take the Left Hooks of Paul Daley
Like Eugene Jackson, the left hand is dynamite.
"Semtex" managed to stop the Xtreme Couture product with vicious and patient left hooks as he counter punched.
The Dane was told by his corner to take the fight to the ground, but Daley avoided both the one direct takedown attempt and shrugged off all clinch attempts.
There is some controversy about the stoppage. While Kampmann was standing both during and after the stoppage, it appears the Dutchman could've taken perhaps a few more punches to make it definite. Again, though, there is a question of medical responsibility in letting fighters go unconscious for the clarity of a decision.
Either way, "Semtex" was landing virtually at will on a much bewildered Martin Kampmann. Once he was badly rocked, Daley poured on the heavy punching until the ref stepped in.
Yves Lavigne stops the fight at 2:31 of the very first round.

mmmmm
Daley was winning, and probably would have won, but I’m gonna go with Early Stoppage on this one. He was on his feet, covering up with his hands…
I've got this Christian girlfriend now and she's trying to get me to be a better man and reconnect with my son and I'm trying to get her to renounce God and [bleep] me and I just want to prove to her that I'm worth it.
It looked like lavigne stopped it after a particularly hard punch came through Kampman’s hands; maybe he figured that Martin would just end up taking more like that, so he stopped the fight. It’s a total judgement call.
What does this mean for both guys? It kinda shows the messed-up nature of the welterweight division. Swick would have fought GSP if he had won, but clearly Daley won’t do that, so is Swick going to fight GSP now or are they going to have Swick fight Daley to fight GSP?
Oh and this Spike TV thing kinda worked to their disadvantage because they ended up showing one fight twice :D Too many knockouts!!!
What fight was shown twice? Have I missed something? lol

They showed the Story-Foster fight on the Spike broadcast then at then end of the PPV. It was sub of the night.
I’d hardly call the very very last fight on the PPV being a re-air of something that they showed on Spike prior a “disadvantage”. Not everyone saw the stuff on spike, it’s all good.

Don’t let the stoppage diminsh the victory for Daley…he beat the shit out of Kampmann, pretty badly might I add. For him to come in on short notice like that and be that impressive is quite a feat.

Short notice fights FTL. I was really looking forward to Swick vs Kampmann and now Daley came in and ruined that, only to eventually be a Welterweight gatekeeper.
He ruined it? Seems to me if his end goal is as a gatekeeper, and he dominates Kampmann…then Kampmann/Swick wasn’t really that important

One of the worst stoppages I have ever seen. How can the ref stop the fight when the guy is on his feet with his hands up covering his face and defending himself. People recover from that position all the time. They grab their opponent, clinch and recover, or their opponent doesnt move in for the kill………etc So many things can occur. Just look at Condits recent fight…..he was dropped repeatedly and looked gone, but still managed to win. Kampmann wasnt even knocked down!!!! Was he rocked? Sure. But since when have fights been stopped just because a guy was rocked? I hope this doesnt set some kind of precedent where refs start stopping fights whenever a guy gets rocked. Terrible, terrible stoppage.
Not at all. In that situation in boxing the ref would be able to step in and give a standing 8 count. When a fighter’s legs keep buckling and his eyes keep rolling back in his head (which is what refs are taught to look for) it’s the right time to stop the fight. The idea that a guy has to be unconscious to stop a fight is very dangerous. Martin was getting tagged over and over again and there was no reason to make him take more punishment until he collapsed.

You say ‘no reason to make him take more punishment’ but what about giving Kampmann an opportunity to regain composure? You’re assuming that Daley would have continued to successfuly land clean shots and the fight would have ended ala Yoshida v Kos. Thats the point Im disputing.
You can look back at dozens of mma fights where the same “no reason to take more punishment” rationale could have applied yet the result of the fight went the other way. Maybe Daley would have grazed Kampmann and knocked him down allowing kampmann to pull guard and regain composure or crawl forward and grab a leg. Maybe Kampman would have clinched and regained composure. Maybe kampmann would have done as Condit did only a couple of nights ago and rolled and squirmed until he recovered. To quote Goldie from that fight after Condit got knocked down, “And its all……….about over!” What looks like a certainty at one point becomes far less certain only 3 or 4 seconds later. So many things could have still happened in that fight.
Was Daley most likely to win? Yeah. But so was Herring against Nog, Fujita against Fedor and countless others where a guy has been rocked.
Im not suggesting a guy has to be unconscious necessarily, but if a guy is standing and doing his best to defend himself with his hands up in front of his face, its not the time to stop the fight, imo.
