UFC 103 Preview: Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic Faces Crossroads Against Junior Dos Santos
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (25-6-2) is considered by many fans to be a living legend in the sport of mixed martial arts. The Croatian striker carved out his legacy as being a devastating kickboxer who could knock out nearly anyone in the ring with his patented left head kick that every opponent knew was coming. Mirko's striking, feints, and set ups made it nearly impossible for his opponents to gauge when the blow would strike, and Mirko fed on opponents for years in PRIDE from that mystery.
Nowadays, the jury is still out on whether the old "Cro Cop" will ever return. He was one of the first big name PRIDE fighters to make the trek to the UFC to try to prove his skills in the Octagon, winning his debut battle against Eddie Sanchez at UFC 67. In retrospect, it looked more like a Sanchez who was mentally defeated before he even stepped foot in the cage. Mirko's legendary status will do that to a fighter.
After a shocking loss to Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 70 and a crushing defeat at UFC 75 at the hands of Cheick Kongo, Mirko moved on to take on competition outside of the organization. Many fans deemed the experiment over, and many believed that Mirko's career was on a downturn toward retirement.
Fortunately for fans, Mirko has managed to come back to the UFC with a surgically repaired knee, fixed deviated septum, and from the sounds of it -- a new hunger and determination to succeed. His UFC 99 match-up with Mustapha Al Turk ended in the first round via TKO, although there was some controversy surrounding how it ended. Nonetheless, fans are now rallying behind Mirko's presence back in the Octagon with open arms. Unfortunately, he's drawn a heavy-handed Brazilian beast in Junior Dos Santos (8-1).
Dos Santos burst onto the scene at UFC 90 by knocking out an arguable top 10 fighter in Fabricio Werdum, and backed up the belief that he could be a crushing force in the division by devastating newcomer Stefan Struve at UFC 95. The powerful 6'4", 240 lb. fighter was instantly thrust into discussions regarding the potential for a title run, but the UFC is still feeding Dos Santos some stiff tests... the next being Mirko "Cro Cop".
On paper, the first version of "Cro Cop" in the UFC doesn't stand a great chance against Dos Santos. He was much slower, looked to be bothered by the range of Kongo, and was unable to defend against the crushing elbows that Gonzaga pummeled him with during their bout. Today, "Cro Cop" should be much more adept to the problems he'll face in the Octagon. He's stated that he's trained extensively in his own cage in Croatia in which he has gained a considerable amount of knowledge in moving around it for his footwork, a huge issue that many fans have pointed out. Will that be enough?
I hate to play Devil's Advocate here, but this is a tough fight for me to jump back on the "Cro Cop" bandwagon for due to the real mystery as to whether his training is going to pay off for him on Saturday. I still believe he looked a bit slow against Mustapha Al-Turk, and Al-Turk was far from a formidable test considering Mirko has only been submitted once in his entire career. Dos Santos is a much more game opponent, and this should be the real test as to whether he's returned. The range could be a bit of a problem for Mirko as well, but speed and footwork will ultimately be what breeds success for Mirko in this fight.
I think this is truly the crossroads for Mirko. Many fans feel he was done after being beaten by Cheick Kongo, but a loss here would ultimately crush his goals for this run in the UFC, a shot at the title. He'd likely need to pick up some big wins in order to get back into the mix, and I don't think we'll ever see the quick version of Mirko "Cro Cop" back in MMA. Prove me wrong, Mirko...

Unfortunately I got JDS, I am a fan of JDS but I really want to see a rematch between Nogueira/Cro Cop and if Cro Cop loses I am not sure we will get to see that.

and AO right? His nuts must be made out of adamantium!
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

my heart wins over my head..
i’m going with Cro Cop.
We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.
It doesn’t matter who you train with.
When it comes down to it, the cage door closes and DS will be alone – standing across from the biggest challenge he has ever faced in his MMA career.
He will be facing one of the most feared strikers in MMA history. Cro Cop does not fear Dos Santos. Cro Cop taught himself to train by watching films and training in his garage. Does the younger Dos Santos wilt under the pressure? Does it finally dawn on him that he has reached a crucial stage in his career, and he is not as free flowing as he was in his last 2 fights?
There are many factors that will decide the outcome of this intriguing fight, and I believe it is an occasion where current form goes out of the window. For me, Dos Santos is facing someone that is slightly too experienced for him at this stage of his career.
I expect the old master to put one over on the young lion here as DS finally folds under the pressure of becoming the next great HW prospect. His time will come, but not tonight … CC to win via TKO early in the 2nd round.
Ummmmmmm
While yes it’s true that the people you train with are not in the cage with you when the door closes….I would disagree that it doesn’t matter who you train with.
If you train with the best people in the world in their respective disciplines, versus training with the bag boy at the local grocery store, how can you say that makes no difference?
You don’t think that “Bones” is going to improve now that he has great group of people to train with? He would have been better off watching youtube videos?
The training camp and training partners help prepare you with what you may encounter in the cage. After that it is up to the fighter to put all that information and skill to use.
Unfortunately today it does matter who you train with…
Crocop doing his training camp in his basement where he’s the head trainer doesn’t work anymore… 5 years ago? maybe. Now? no.
When you have drug testing you need a very good strength and conditioning coach… you need to maximize every other area of training.
ex. BJ Penn – one of the best talents out there needs the best strength and conditioning coach.
I believe if he went up to the 170lb division properly the fight with GSP would have been different. God knows if he would have won but it sure would have been different.
The problem is if he would have went up in weight properly he would of never been able to come back down and still be effective at 155.
This is why GSP is no way moving up to fight Anderson. He’s smart and knows in order to be effective at 185 the changes he would need to make physically would make it impossible to ever come back down if the venture proved unsuccessful.
This risk makes no sense yet in his career.
At this level of competition fights are won and lost at the margins… Training in your basement and sparring with your gardener doesn’t work anymore.
Of course guys, I understand this. Please let me be more clear.
The development of a fighter is pivotal in terms of who teaches, guides, and instructs you when you are developing. However Cro Cop learnt his way and for the most part he has been very successful.
I was talking more about the result tonight, in terms of I don’t believe it will save DS because he trains with the Nogueira brothers. I am still confident that CC will be too muc for him.
I hope you all enjoy the event guys.
