Strikeforce's Fedor Emelianenko vs Brett Rogers Card Filling Out, Chicago Possible
Michael David Smith talks to Scott Coker and gets more scoop on the November 7 Fedor Emelianenko vs Brett Rogers card on CBS:
Can you tell me any of the undercard fights?
I can tell you some of the fighters. You'll see Gegard Mousasi, Jake Shields, Mayhem Miller and Cris Cyborg. It'll be a solid card, with the No. 1 heavyweight in the world and a great undercard.
And ESPN.com is reporting that Chicago is the likely venue for the event:
The mixed martial arts promotion Strikeforce is in talks with Illinois' athletic commission to sanction its Nov. 7 bout featuring Fedor Emelianenko, according to sources close to the negotiations.
The bout, which will be nationally televised by CBS, would be held at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.
And per MMA Junkie:
"Thanks to [expletive] B.A. Baracus, I couldn't [expletive] pull it off," White said. "B.A. [expletive] me. The collateral damage that was done by him doing this thing was unbelievable."
...
But White said the loss of a counter-programming option is but one of the effects of Jackson's Hollywood aspirations.
With Jackson withdrawing from a planned December bout with opposing "The Ultimate Fighter 10: Heavyweights" coach Evans - a bout that was scheduled to take place in "Rampage's" hometown of Memphis, Tenn. - White was forced to schedule a B.J. Penn vs. Diego Sanchez bout in the main event of the as-yet-unannounced UFC 107 event."
And middleweight champ Anderson Silva won't be available either, per MMA Junkie:
"Contrary to whatever the hell [Silva] is saying, he's not 200 percent healthy," White said. "He's having some bone spurs removed from his elbow, which is a simple little procedure that happens, but you've got to have recovery time."

added an update
thanks to the A-Team, Dana’s got no counter programming options. I think that’s a lucky break for the UFC.

hughes?
and the 103 guys who won’t get injured? or if they can pull it off (which i doubt, but free tv would offer big money in the long run), Hendo vs Marquardt..

They will most likely counter with a PPV replay.

Congratulations
Just Remember MMA>Pacqauio. And if you do a bad job we’ll have a battle royale between Supremacy and Logic for Interim Writer.
WAR Strikeforce!!!
I’m so glad that they are stacking this card. The more people exposed to MMA the better for fans and fighters alike. I hope Shields and Mayhem square off. Wonder who Moussasi will fight? He and Fihlo have exchanged words, so hopefully they can settle it on CBS. Fedor is the GOAT for sure, but Grimm has that Rocky feel to him and is only 1 punch away from shocking the world. It’s a longshot, though. Cyborg always brings it. Should be a great night of FREE fights.

Projected card:
Fedor vs Rogers
Mousasi vs Hector Lombard maybe
Shields vs. Miller
Cyborg vs ? at LHW (145.1-155 lbs.) – Coker mentioned she want to try moving up a weight class
Not a bard card

mayhemmiller: Ok bitches who said I was ducking- I duck NO ONE. Fighting Sheilds on November 7th. Official BOOM
Anyone else think that the 4.1 million who watched TUF will be more than watch this Strikeforce crad that is stacked for the hardcore fans, but no real casual fan draws?
At it’s peak the Kimbo fight had 6.451 million viewers and this will still beat it. With Fedor as the main event instead of Kimbo expect significant more coverage by the press. he might not be “popular” but he’s legit.
I don’t think you’re right about that.
The MMA press will go crazy about Fedor, but the mainstream media won’t be paying attention to the mma media as much, especially if there’s no counterprogramming.
Around UFC 100 we had stories of Fedor on ESPN, Time Magizine, and SI. We should expect a significant increase over the coverage Kimbo got, as well as the MMA press going nuts. Besides CBS will probably push this more than they did the Kimbo fights. They won’t be embarrassed to embrace Fedor like they were with a certain “street fighter”.
The key to that is around UFC 100.
Big UFC events are what get the mainstream media to pay attention to the mma media.
They cared about Fedor because Dana said he was going to sign him. Less people will be listening if there is no UFC event and Dana can shut up for a week.
Frank and Lorenzo should send Dana back to Dubai for the 2 weeks before the SF show.
Would be smart but they couldn’t do that with the UFC promoting 3 shows within 30 days of it. He’s going be asked about Fedor a lot during that time, people love to watch him get worked up, so expect some coverage.
Although in his new interview, he’s acting pretty calm when talking about Fedor and Strikeforce so maybe he’s finally learned his lesson.
Fancy Pants
Strikeforce needs to showcase this guy, but I think they’re scared he’ll ruin the hype of all the LW’s they’ve been building up… Lyle Beerbohm is a great story and strikeforce should capitalize off that. Fancy Pants is legit as they come and he FINISHES FIGHTS!!!!
Magic Pants vs Fancy Pants has to be made!

Fancy pants is a legend around these parts (Seattle)
any dude who wears (what equates to) cut-off hammer pants made by his mother needs a primetime fight on CBS.
It’s 6 words into the post, I can’t believe one of these other grammar nazis hasn’t mentioned it yet.

You should add Mayhem vs Shields for MW Title since Cung Le got stripped.

Cung Le Stripped, Shields vs Mayhem for MW Title
Jake Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller will now vie for the undisputed title under the eye of CBS when the two meet at the promotion’s network debut Nov. 7 at location to be announced early next week. A report on ESPN.com says the Sears Center Arena in Chicago is under close consideration, citing sources close to the situation. The telecast will air live from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. E.S.T. Coker was unaware whether the broadcast would be tape delayed to other parts of the country.

He is still in Strikeforce, but not available for another 2-3 months.

"I had a conversation with Cung and he has a lot of respect for Jake and Jason, and he’s got another movie coming up, so he’s asked me if he could step down, which we’re going to honor his request," said Coker. "By no means does that mean he’s going to be retired, but he’s going to be unavailable for the next two months."
Coker said he hoped to book the newly minted movie star again after his filming obligations completed, though nothing was confirmed.
"With Cung, every six weeks we’ll be checking back with him," he continued. "Now that he’s not going to be our title holder, we’ll put him in some big super fights and continue his MMA career, but not have the pressure of defending his belt when he has movie opportunities."

That would also mean not having to worry about having him fight top fighters like Jacare, Mayhem, and Shields.
Yup...
I think this is good all around. Now he would have to earn being a champ against great competition.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Sep 17, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Jacare is most likely fighting on this card, if not, he will fight on December.
He would make the most sense as a #1 contender.

Lol, not available for two months huh? Overeem has been unavailable for two years but he still gets a free pass. If they don’t strip him and make Fedro-Rogers for the title they are morons.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

There was a lightweight no name one time. He kept doing these spinning heel kicks that looked like they hurt really bad. The kid puked his guts out right afterwards.
Conor Heun. He just fought Jorge Gurgel a month ago on the Challengers card. It was a pretty good slugger fight.

the ufc WILL counter
but with what is the question. i agree that a live event would not be a good idea and a replay is most likley, OR, it’s just might be possible they could counter with a new TUF show. a TUF show that just did 4.1 million on basic cable. it’s even slightly possible they could counter SF with kimbo’s debut fight (the finale is dec 5th) on TUF. even if it’s not in the right order or on the same night, the ufc and spike could do this easy and there would be no pressure for them. so what if a free network event beats an episode of TUF, no big deal to zuffa, but what if an episode of TUF on basic cable beat out fedor on network tv. this would be devastating to SF. i already know the hardcores will lambaste this idea and scoff at the notion, but it’s not the hardcore fans who will make up most of the ratings, it will be the casual fans, and the casual fans apparently are already very familiar with kimbo and the ufc-think 4.1 million, spike highest rated show ever period. just a thought.;)
Why is it so out of the question for the show to be on strikeforces hometurf… San Jose ca…

It would be bananas if it were in Chitown
I never thought I’d actually get a chance to see Fedor fight in person and now I possibly do! Anybody have any idea how much decent Strikeforce tickets are?
Much cheaper than UFC’s, thats for sure.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Sep 17, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions
very reasonable…. cageside tickets for san jose show for carano/cyborg were ~150, which in ufc gets you nosebleeds
check on craigslist a few days before the fight
no b.s., i got a very choice seat for $40 in st.louis (arlovski/grim-diaz/smith). i’m sure the chicago tickets will go for more, but it don’t hurt to try.:)
Thanks guys...
now to find out about getting a ride….
Well I might not be able to afford ringside seats but if things go down as I hope they do…
SF here I come!
It’s gonna be sick. They’ve got Fedor v. Grimm, Mayhem v. Shields, Mousasi (I wonder who he’ll fight) and Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos. WOOT SF!

Sf does not resemble it's failed predecessors
Isn’t it obvious to everyone by now that SF is promotion that’s here to stay. They are competently managed and recently aquired and handfull of rare income generating assets . They don’t have to stop Zuffa from doing PPV’s to be successfull. It’s far more likely that SF will just continue to produce quailty content for networks. Does anyone think Scott Coker is going to make fighter contracts that could result in bankrupting his company? no way. Uness Zuffa comitted to providing 12+ free shows per year then there will always be room for a network content provider like SF. The sport is only getting more popular and the consumer apatite is only growing larger. As more people become true fans of the sport, replays of old shows will be less effective in diminshing viewership of a quality live event. (especially with technology making it possible for people to not have to choose) The only interesting question is can SF ever hold a successfull PPV. I suppose the answer is no, but time will tell.
I hope zuffa gives us 102 or 103 for free on Nov. 7. I was at 102 so didn’t bother buying it, and I dont think I’ll buy 103.
