UFN 19 Post Fight: Nate Quarry, Carlos Condit, Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz Talk About Their Victories
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
UFC Fight Night 19 ended and it was a great night of fights, as all the televised bouts each brought their own blend of fireworks to the table. Main card fighters, Nate Quarry, Carlos Condit, Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz all earned themselves hard fought victories that had entertaining back and forth action.
Nate Quarry talked about his 15-minute war with Tim Credeur that earned both of them the Fight of the Night bonuses:
I knew he was going to take this as a huge opportunity to move forward and use me as a stepping stone. I took this fight just as seriously as everything. I knew it was going to be a war.
I was really trying to build up the suspense in the fight. After the first round, I was like, 'Alright, now I've worn him down. Now his knuckles are sore and tired. I should probably start hitting him, too... I kind of expected him to use his reach and move back. He cracked me a few good times. Fortunately I was able to counterpunch a few good times and land some shots.
Carlos Condit won in a tightly contested match against Jake Ellenberger. The 'Natural Born Killer' talked about taking those big shots that almost ended the fight in the first:

I was pretty rocked. I was probably in a heap of trouble, but I kind of just pulled through. I was there mentally, but for a second my vision in my left eye was a little bit fuzzy. He hit me with a good shot. I think I threw a kick, and he caught me with a right hand. He's a pretty powerful dude, pretty explosive. I just kind of persevered, and that's been something that's helped me through a lot of fights in my career is just being tough and being able to weather storms. I was in trouble in the first round, but I didn't want to lose this fight. Unless I was knocked out or finished, I wasn't going to quit.
I'm glad that I won, but I was disappointed that it was so close. But a win is a win. I obviously have some things to work on, and I will definitely be working diligently at the gym... I was pretty sure that I got the decision, but had it gone the same way the Kampmann one did, I would have been pretty disappointed. Again, I had a fight that I didn't finish and that went to a judges decision. Hopefully I can fix some things in my game and finish my next opponent so we won't have to worry about it.
Gray Maynard almost ended the fight with a third round kimura attempt, but a very tough Roger Huerta refused to tap and grinded it out to a decision. Gray talked about his victory:

Every time I hit him, his arms starting going like this [waves his arms around wildly]. Every time I hit him, he’d do two or three of those, I was like, ‘Whoa.’ He was trying to turn it into a crazy war. He’s tough... I know he could squirm and scramble, that’s why I had to play the game of ‘stop him and scramble.
I had [the kimura] in deep. I heard his arm popping. I said to the referee ‘Holy [expletive], do you hear that?’ I thought it was going to break. I’m glad it didn’t break and that’s a good ref [Herb Dean] in there, he made the right call [letting the match continue]."
In the night's main event, Nate Diaz beat Melvin Guillard, in a fight that saw him recover from a first round knock down, and went on to secure a submission finish. Diaz talked about the fight:
My boxing coach was telling me to feel him out, take a step back and throw – make him come to you. But I kind of rushed in there and got knocked down. I was like, 'Ah, figures.' I leapt in there like I shouldn't have done. But I recovered right away... I was alright though, after I sat down a little bit. I just thought, 'Don't jump in there anymore.'
I hit him with a right-left good, and his head popped back, and he started acting like he was [hurt]... I knew that's what he was going to do, so I hit him, and I came forward like I was going to run in after him. Then he threw the big one, and I stepped back like me and my boxing coach had worked on. I ran in because he was playing dumb, then he threw the big one like I was expecting. He moved and went from the big shot to a takedown, which I was fine with. I was like, 'Now he's getting desperate.'
Shortly after that takedown attempt, Diaz sunk in the choke, and took the victory. When asked what he wants next, Diaz replied:
I want to fight somebody in the top-five, or even top-three. I don't want anybody less. I don't want to go down. I want to go up.

Nate Diaz
needs to get a couple of wins in a row under his belt before he starts calling out contenders again.

I hit him with a right-left good, and his head popped back, and he started acting like he was [hurt]…
I rewatched the fight again last night, and that had to be the worst acting job ever.
weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.
Sorry Nate
According to the USA TODAY / SB Nation Consensus MMA Rankings, I gotta go down to about #19 or #20 before I find a winnable fight for you.
so he’s going to the WEC to fight an injured guy?

Of course not- but he was talking winnable fights, not UFC specific matchups, at least that was my understanding.
Regardless, I feel ya’ rzor, I like Nate, but I have a difficult time seeing him make a title run in this division.

Unless there are tons of major improvments which I don’t see I have a hard time seeing Nate win back to back fights against mid level LW’s in the UFC. Let alone beating any one in the top contender. His main weakness is just like his brothers but way more so. All a fighter has to have is decent wrestling ,top control and sud defense to win a easy decision. I just see that happening time and time again every time he moves up in the devision.
That's the first time
I’ve ever shouted at the TV for a fighter to tapout. Fighters usually try to protect themselves in those cases. A sign of incredible pain threshold and perhaps no interest in pursuing future MMA bouts.
I was shouting at Huerta to rip his own arm off and beat Maynard with it. That would’ve definitely won “Fight of the Night” honors.

Melvin was getting desperate? I guess I had better watch it again because he had him completely dominating Nate until acting very stupid.
Nate has amazing sub skills, but unless his overall game improves, he is going to face a lot of beatings.
Even his wins have generally come after beatings…not a good way to ensure a long career.
Yeah, I didn’t see any hint of desparation in Guillard. I remember commenting how cool Melvin looked during the fight.

Guess we have differing definitions of “completely dominating”. Seemed to me that Melvin got one good punch at the beginning of the fight, and spent the rest of the fight backpeddling and trying to get up after Nate had him down.

Well, every time Nate got Melvin on the ground, Melvin calmly and more or less immediately got up before Nate could do anything. And on the feet, Melvin was staying outside Nate’s range almost the entire time, barely getting hit, and landing the vast majority of the solid punches. And I can’t believe you would forget that awesome hip throw (somebody must have a .gif of that).
Nate had virtually no meaningful offense before the fight-ending sub. He may not have been “dominated,” but I’d say he was clearly losing.
of which 15k will go towards plastic surgery.

Well, I guess nobody can say Creduer has no standup now
I really thought he was going to take the fight after that first round performance, but oh man, did he gas badly by the end of the third. He was beyond exhausted by the end of the third.
I finish beers at 1:55.
Anybody else feel that..
there was no way the Maynard-Huerta fight was 30-27? The first round was clearly imho Huerta’s and the second round was pretty close, though I will give the 3rd to Maynard. I see the fight as a draw, and maybe even 28-27 Maynard but no freaking way 30-27.
I had it 29-28 Maynard, but agree Roger won the first round. That said, GM did land some nice shots in the first. Roger won it, but it was not a dominant round.
30-27 is just not right …
how can anyone see maynard winnning the 1st round is beyond me?
oh cecil peoples you here?
Maynard landed the cleaner, crisper, harder shots in round 1. The fight was close and Huerta looked good, but I saw a sweep for Gray.
"He hit like a bitch."
I gave the first round to Huerta, but it was very close. Maynard mostly dominated the round until Huerta landed that one flurry that knocked Gray down. The judge who scored it for Huerta was worse than the 30-27 in my opinion.
I thought round 2 was very close and I thought the fight was a draw (if you score round wise). If you score using Pride rules where you are judged on the whole fight Maynard won due to the closest fight finishing effort. In round 3 Maynard maintained ground control but didn’t manage much GnP and had the kimura attempt which means the round was clearly 10-9 to him.
So in your draw scenario, you saw the rounds go 10-9 Huerta, 10-10, 10-9 Maynard?
"He hit like a bitch."
10 – 10 rounds don’t happen very often. I had huerta winning the first, maynard with the last and the second being a toss up. I’m biased towards huerta so my judgement may have been clouded but I firmly believe huerta was closer to finishing the fight in the first round than gray was. That should matter.
"I want to tell me what you see, let's go ahead and see by the fight what you saw, in the ring"
Agreed 10-10 is rare, but if it deserves it, why not? The issue lies with judges under pressure to giving decisions. I’m pretty sure the fact that Huerta is leaving the UFC affected that decision.
The judges don’t work for the UFC. I think they could care less where Huerta goes.
It was a close fight. Simple as that.
weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.
I think Cecil Peoples would disagree
Jokes aside, even you admit it was a close fight. How could that fight go 30-27 Maynard?
Jokes aside, even you admit it was a close fight.
Even me? Not sure what that means… :\
and I think it was a close fight, I didn’t mind it going either way.

Viva La Credeur!
Between the V-blog and the fight, I have become a very big fan of Tim Credeur. A real blue-collar fighter that busts his ass. I don’t think he is a great fighter, but he is good and seems like a very cool person.
Condit has the worst “scary” face in UFC history.

Scary Face honors go to the Guida/Huerta round 3 stare down

I like Condit, but he really exposed some holes in his game in that he gets extremely reckless which leaves him open to getting hit in the standup and swept on the ground. Credeur is a gamer, but he is just not ready for tougher competition just yet, and Nate Quarry is the perennial gatekeeper for Middleweight. Maynard, while landing a couple clean shots on the feet, has holes in his standup, and I have yet to see him really go toe-to-toe with someone on the feet. I think that Guida would actually test Maynard because the pace of the fight seemed to have an affect on Maynard as shown as when he fought Huerta.
I think Condit is too used to having 5 rounds
Weren’t most of his fights in the WEC title fights? I’m sure it’s a bit of a comedown realising you only have 3 rounds to finish things instead of 5.
His cardio was impressive though – Ellenburger clearly started to gas in the second. Condit took it because he could go the distance.
I finish beers at 1:55.
Carlos does have great conditioning, but he never went five rounds in the WEC because he could finish everybody. Hopefully, he’s realizing he has to develop a better sense of when to be aggressive in the UFC, cause he looks sloppy, and it almost cost him the fight last night. Carlos looked to be better than Jake in every way, though the margin wasn’t huge, but he almost lost the fight in the first round by not being evasive enough. He’s said he expected Ellenberger to come out throwing bombs, but he was backing straight away when Jake thew a flurry. I wish he was training his standup with better guys. Arizona Combat Sports isn’t exactly known as a hotbed of great Muay Thai practicioners. He needs to train with guys who’ll kick his ass a bit, as he’s been a big fish in a small pond, and now has to realize he’s got a long way to go before he can contend with Fitch or GSP. Hopefully, they give him another tough near contender, along the lines of a Hardy or Hazelett. He’s not ready for the Jon Fitch rematch just yet…
