Looked to me like he wasn’t sparring well at all with Rampage watching, but maybe that was intentional. Maybe he knew Rampage is the weaker coach and didn’t want to be on his team. Considering that Rampage didn’t even know who he is, I’m sure he knew he was better off on Greg Jackson’s side.

Funny wasn't it

Rampage sure doesn’t pay much attention to MMA for a top 10 LHW. That guy isn’t the sharpest knife in the dishwasher…

Don't quote me on this...

but I think I have heard quite a few MMA guys say they don’t really pay attention to MMA. I thought it was weird, but I have read of other pro athletes not following their own sport.

Doesn’t change the fact that Rampage is a shit coach who harasses women reporters.

I wonder by Rampage’s picks if he really cares if his team wins or not. Evans is obviously taking this very seriously, but I question if Rampage takes this seriously as well. With Sims and Kimbo alone, Rampage definitely has a team full of interesting personalities.

Rampage is not a coach. He is a figure head. Tiki is the coach. Rampage is only on to because he has a fight (which is now off) with Rashad.

In all honesty..

Rashad had every intention of picking up his 2 guys from his camp first.. So when Kimbo walked in he was ok with sacrificing Kimbo to get his first pick that he wanted.. I would be willing to bet that he would have picked Kimbo 3rd or 4th if Page hadn’t jumped on him so early..

Page doesn’t follow fighters outside of LHW & personal friends. He has said as much in multiple interviews.. He is honestly a horrible coach.. Again some guys can be good athletes but terrible teachers.. But we also have to take into consideration that this is a scripted for TV show. Producers and writers have most of it mapped out and then the video editors swing it in the way they want you to view it..

by dnevil001 on Sep 17, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure..

Kimbo is not a complete scrub.. He’s got a decent base and good power.. He has picked up a few things over the past couple of months prior to the taping of the show.. The one thing many people have said about him since the show was how impressed they were with him & his ability.. He obviously surpassed expectations for many people. It doesn’t mean he made it through to the end, but I think it’s safe to say he did better than expected..

We also know that he only had to win his first fight to secure his contract with the UFC. Everything after that is just incentive bonuses to perk the contract numbers up. He obviously wins at some point in the show because it’s been leaked that he secured his 4 fight deal.

Greg Jackson would have taken him all the same.. He has a lot of potential. He just needs the right coaches and camp to put it all together and keep his head in the game..

But this is a very short camp & the

coaches have multiple fighters to train. I dont Greg Jackson was too keen on completely retooling Kimbo, which is what he would need to do make him a threat against a wrestler.

by dnevil001 on Sep 17, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess we’ll see.. :)

Kimbo is a lot further down the progression pole than you might think.. He wasn’t home sitting on his ass the last 15-16 months.. He’s been to all kinds of camps training.. prior to his appearance on the show.. His management knew the offer on the table and turned down big money in Japan to go there. They knew he needed some intense training before going on the show, to be successful. It wasn’t just a off the cuff thing for him to appear on the show and make a run for a UFC contract. This was all calculated prior to him ever even making the decision to go..

the big deal is that no one else was told you don’t have to do anything for the coaches evals – come on now you think it’s okay that Rampage gave Kimbo special treatment – Kimbo is coming in having to prove himself to Dana White because of his special treatment in the past

But how was that Kimbo’s fault ?? He didn’t ask for any special treatment. He went through the Evals just like every other contestant , even though he was told he didn’t have to for Page.

He’s there, that in of itself is proof enough that he is trying to prove himself IMO.. He turned down big money in Japan to go on the show.

I never said it was Kimbo’s fault, I am saying that I disagree with Rampage telling Kimbo that he didn’t have to do anything for the evals. So yeah, Rampage tells Kimbo he is going to pick him and he doesn’t have to do anything right in front of the other guys – that is unprofessional (not like Rampage is professional to begin with) and what does that tell the other fighters that will be picked for his team? It tells them that he is going to be focused on Kimbo alone and not his team as a whole.

I sort of thought that Kimbo’s standup would be better. After all the street fighting and the training he’s been doing, his punches looked really sloppy, he sort of swings from his shoulders instead of his hips.

I think that sometimes Rampage is too busy trying to act and say the funny thing. I prefered it right after his red bull accident. He was all mellow and didn’t care about trying to say something clever and funny. He seemed more real. Now it seems like he just wants the celebrity personae.

by Dooda on Sep 17, 2009 2:07 AM EDT reply actions

Rampage is too busy being Rampage. If he didn’t have the coaches doing the actual work, he’d be really screwed. Then again, that coaching staff picked a guy who spent nine minutes trying failing to do a damn thing off his back against a wrestler. Almost as if they’d asked either Evans or Jackson to pick the first fight.

In a way, at this point, this season is starting to look like the one with Tito and Ken. I don’t have any respect for the public persona Ortiz is working, but he worked his ass off with his team while Ken was too busy counting the days till he got his ass whooped by Tito.

Of course, this proves jack s**t about how the eventual Evans-Rampage match will go. Right now, though – I’d hate to be on team Rampage.

The only problem with that is that most people highly under-rate Kimbo’s hands. He’s actually pretty accurate and has some Mack trucks behind those punches. McSweeney isn’t exactly Iron Man in the chin department. McSweeney vs. Jones is probably his best bet.

I mean, maybe he’ll prove me wrong, and there’s probably power there, but he throws his head and shoulders into his punches. They looked slow with no snap to me. But that’s just me and I’m no expert.

right but Im sure the UFC knows going into this who they want to do well. At least one of the NFL guys is going to make it in an attempt to give the sport more credibility. While Big Country may be the most experienced, he does not have as high a ceiling as the other fighters. They want diamond in the rough guys, and he is there to test them. The guys who come out of TUF usually improve dramatically. I just dont see the more experienced guys getting any better. The UFC wants guys like Brock who can initially win some fights with athletic ability and improve quickly.

First off let me say this..

Rampage is not a good coach.. He is terrible.. With that said..

In his defense, as a coach you can only do so much for someone. It’s still up to the individual to go out and perform up to his/her ability. Coaching just get’s you prepared mentally. The single most important aspect to a great coach is their ability to understand your limitations and to prepare you mentally for the worst. The execution of any game plan is dependent upon the individual themselves. In combat sports the key thing to a coach is for their ability to provide you with enough confidence to get the job done. A coach is there to stroke your ego & formulate a plan of attack. You have to have both of those simultaneously otherwise, self doubt will come in to play. Again the key thing for a coach is to prepare you “mentally”..

The one fault Rampage has at being a coach is that he doesn’t know enough about “all” the fighters in the sport to be effective as a coach. A coach is like a talent scout in a sense. It’s their jobs to know the who’s, who, and to identify their strength and weaknesses. Then prepare you mentally for that challenge. Page was giving him sound advice.. Although it wasn’t with much motivational tone, it was still sound advice.. He repeatedly told Abe to work off the fence, to try for a sweep, to work to his feet. He also told him every single time that he was going to go for the same takedown and to circle out and sprawl.. It’s was just as much Abe’s fault as it was Pages.. Abe was a broken fighter because he wasn’t prepared mentally for the challenge ahead. Page didn’t know anything about his opponent to even give him a solid plan.. Just go out and fight..
