Does Anderson Silva vs. Frank Mir Make Sense?

Anderson-silva_mediumFrankmir_medium

From Bloodyelbow:

"I’m 200 percent healthy and there’s no injury. UFC can set the next fight whenever they want, I’m ready. I’m interested in fighting Frank Mir. He can be the next one," he says.

In Regards to this statement posted early does a Anderson Silva Vs. Frank Mir fight make sense? I believe it does. Anderson Silva has cleared out the middleweight division in the UFC. He has beaten everybody in the top of that division. Yes Hendo and Mardquart deserves to be recognized as contenders but have they made the proper adjustments to their games to be able to compete with Anderson? Henderson has racked up three impressive victories since his loss but I do not see any improvments in his game. He is still the same fighter he was when they first fought. I see  the end result being the same but most likely coming sooner in the fight. Nate on the other hand has seemed to turn up the agressiveness since his loss but that plays right into Anderson's hands. Mardquart has shown better stand up but he is nowhere near the level of Silva in that department and he was unable to do anything on the ground the first time around. I see Silva winning this fight in the same fashion he did their first one once again.

This leads to the question who can challenge Anderson Silva and should he be allowed to jump around weight classes if he wants. He has already moved up to lightheavy and dominated Irvin and the former champion Forrest Griffin. He made Griffin Look like an amateur. Anderson Silva is unwilling to fight close friend and Training partner Lyoto Machida. Since this is the case why let him continue to knock out top contenders in the lightheavy class? He  wants to challenge himself and he thinks Frank Mir presents that challenge. Mir is a former heavyweight champ and is currently a top 5 heavyweight. He has an amazing ground game and improving stand up. Mir is the only man to every stop Big Nog, Anderson's friend and training partner. Mir is not only skilled but he is a big big man routinely weighing in at around 250 pounds which would easily give him a 25 to 30 pound advantage over Silva. Mir's name has never been bigger since his fight against Lesnar at UFC 100 and he has been keeping his name in the news. Also Anderson is coming off his biggest and most dramatic win to date with his win over Griffin at UFC 101 a show that did around a million buys, meaning Silva's popularity is at an all time high.

Not only would this fight do huge numbers at the box office it would also provide Anderson Silva with the challenges that he is looking for. It could also lead to him fighting Brock Lesnar and we all know that would do even bigger numbers potentially 2 million PPV buys. Anderson Silva is looking for challenges and there are not to many challenges bigger than Frank Mir right now for Anderson Silva. I think Silva wants to leave this sport as a legend and be know as the best ever. He has a real possibilty to hold three belts at one time if the UFC will grant his wish and let him fight in the heavy weight division.

Do you folks think this fight makes sense and what do you see in the future for Anderson Silva?

id rather see

If either cro cop or kongo loose their upcoming fights then id like to see them have a go a Mr A silva…i think mir gets battered like cabbage….

I'd like to see Anderson fight Kongo, absolutely.

Anderson’s a decent-sized guy for LHW, but Kongo would make him look very small.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

Of course it makes sense. Who doesn’t want to see Mir get killed in the cage?

its causing

a divisional shuffle

and Anderson just needs to defend his strap, and quit stalling
i have said before
sure he has potential for super fight
but that’s not Dan Henderson’s problem
he wants to fight heavy, be heavy
wants to box, let him box eventually

but right this second
he’s a contracted fighter, and the current MIDDLEWEIGHT title holder
he has obligations

Any fight for Anderson at a different weight is intriguing to me, so yes.

But there are more exciting match-ups as other people have mentioned. Personally, I’d like to see him fight Cro Cop, and then the winner of Barry/Hardonk.

If this fight happen before he defends the title again I think Nate and Dan should get an interim title match.

I’d rather see him fight a HW striker, but I think it’s a fight that makes sense. I prefer seeing Anderson fight Mir and then the Marquardt/Hendo winner over seeing him fight Marquardt and Hendo back to back.

I think you sit Anderson down and ask him two questions.

1. If we give you fights at 205 will you go for the belt after wiping out the division?

If he answers no, as he would cuz Lyoto holds the belt, then you tell him he can’t have fights at 205.

2. If we give you fights at heavyweight will you go for the belt after wiping out the division?

If the answer is yes, as he would cuz Brock holds the belt, then you tell him he can have Mir.

Even a broken clock is right two times a day.

I don’t doubt that Silva could do well against many in the Heavyweight division but this is getting a little ridiculous. Does anyone really believe he could beat Brock Lesnar? I don’t at all so why even drift toward the Heavyweights? I would like to see him fight Mir though just to see Mir eat his words and see his face get caved in.

by Chadsac on Sep 15, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

It makes sense from the perspective of wanting to see Mir get murdered. Does it do anything for the HW division or Anderson? nope. But I’d still watch it.

big win for Frank Mir

is a huge possibility. He could prolly do real damage to anderson via submission… and I don’t even doubt he could take him down.

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.

What’s the point of doing this for Frank Mir? If he wins everyone will just say it was because he is so much bigger and if he loses he is back to the joke end of the sport. It’s a no win situation for Mir, it doesn’t get him anywhere closer to a title shot or improve his standing in the sport and it risk him losing a fight in front of a huge crowd to a middleweight. For that matter I haven’t really heard much that makes this make sense for either guy beyond “Mir has a big mouth”.

Mir should look for another fight with Big Nog to try and prove something to the skeptics and try and improve his standing in his division and there are a lot more interesting match ups for Anderson SIlva out there than Frank Mir. If your going to do a “super-fight” then do a “super-fight” not just fighting a guy who is bigger than you, Silva vs Cro Cop or Silva vs Couture or Silva vs Ortiz or Silva vs Rampage or Silva vs Belfort(or what I was hoping for Anderson Silva vs Wanderlei Silva). If they are just wanting to pop a buyrate and fill Anderson Silva’s pockets book him against Kimbo post TUF, you know that would sell a million PPV buys with the casual fans, I mean if your going to go freak show why not do it right?

by who me on Sep 15, 2009 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

Bet if Kimbo wins on the Finale, that’s the route they go.

Anderson versus anyone is a win for the UFC.

If Mir wins, he gets an immediate title shot again, most likely, without beating a real heavyweight.
If Andy wins, he further cements his claim as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world and can have huge fights across three weight classes.

Either way, the UFC wins.

I seriously doubt

Slice VS Silva will ever occur, regardless of TUF turnout.

by BakiHanma21 on Sep 15, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea I was joking about Kimbo (unless the spirit of Pride possesses Joe SIlva).

by who me on Sep 15, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would Mir get a title shot for beating a middleweight? What would beating Anderson Silva prove for Frank Mir? Mir needs to fight Nogueria and Anderson Silva either needs to defend the belt he already has or move to light heavyweight and fight guys there.

by who me on Sep 15, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

No it doesn’t make sense and rightfully Dana put this insane idea out a couple of weeks ago in an interview. Anderson needs to fight Nate The Great before talking about him clearing out the MW division. Hughes didn’t clear out his division when he beat GSP once he had to face him again and prove it. Nate at MW now is what GSP was at WW before the second Hughes fight, he will beat Anderson and sooner or later Andy is goint to face him for the belt and get ktfo.

by Raker on Sep 15, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

This fight just doesn't make any sense

Mir is a true HW, and Anderson is a true MW. Mir’s trying to get back into title contention, and Anderson has 3 very viable title contenders in Marquardt, Hendo, and Okami.

Defend your belt, I say. And in the meantime, make Nog/ Mir II happen for a shot at the Lesnar/ Carwin winner’s title. A Mir/ Lesnar rubber match would be huge, and I personally am salivating at the possibility of Nogueira/ Lesnar.

I agree with this 100% Mir vs Nog is the way to go at heavyweight and Silva needs to defend that belt or give it back. The buzz is about Henderson and Marquardt but how long has Okami been waiting for his shot?

by who me on Sep 15, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Okami was slated to get the title shot @ UFC 90, but injured his hand and Cote got the TS. However, Yushin was completely passed over @ UFC 97 in favor of Leites (who turned out not to be even close to ready for someone like Anderson).

But yeah

you’ve got 3 tremendous fighters ready for a title shot, and Anderson is asking for Mir? That just doesn’t make sense.

Not to mention Vitor, who could be thrust into a title match with an impressive win over Rich. Part of me thinks that the UFC will give Belfort the next shot if he beats Franklin excitingly, will pit Nate & Hendo against eachother for a shot, and continue ignoring Okami.

I’d rather see Silva fight Kongo or Cro Cop.

I'd rather

see Anderson stay in his own weight class instead of picking off contenders @ LHW or fighting 2 classes higher than his natural weight.

mir/silva

yea i’d watch,as would everyone ,but do you think its fair that you continue win,but you can’t get a rematch and fight for the belt? i know he wants to challenge himself and get big money fights, but come on defend the belt in the division you hold it in.

by the crippler on Sep 16, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

Silva would have to pick and choose when fighting heavyweights as certain guys like Mir would be easy fights for him, while guys like Lesnar would wreck him with ease. Depending on how Vitor looks and if he wins, I wouldn’t mind seeing that fight. Or Wanderlei against Anderson. I think the Spider takes that one fairly easily, but Wand is always game and would put on a good show.

And there’s no way in hell Anderson Silva holds three belts because there’s no way he could take on a top tier wrestler at HW, and if he could manage to cut all the way down to 170 I can’t see him taking on GSP.
