UFC 103 vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez

May_medium_mediumHaven't given an update on Saturday's PPV collision between a red-hot UFC and the biggest name in boxing today. So here we go with the latest smack talk and speculation.

Dave Meltzer has some thoughts, he's expecting Mayweather by a commanding decision:

UFC seems at a distinct disadvantage in a pay-per-view battle against the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight. Both sides have added new promotional twists. The boxing promoters added a nationwide network of movie theater showings at a relatively low price. UFC has added a one-hour live block on Spike TV (9 p.m. ET) just before the pay-per-view starts. A couple of live preliminary fights from Dallas will be aired to attempt to get people to choose the MMA event.

Few will argue that the boxing side has the stronger headlining fight. It also may be that combat sports fans are simply ready for a high-profile boxing fight. There has not been a major boxing event since May’s Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight. Meanhile, UFC has had big pay-per-view attractions every month.

...

The last time boxing and MMA went head-to-head with major events was Nov. 18, 2006, when UFC presented a Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes main event that did 500,000 buys, compared to a Manny Pacquiao vs. Erik Morales boxing match that did 350,000 buys.

Bad Left Hook has a round up of the smack talk and hype leading into the Mayweather fight:

We also know that Floyd and Marquez will have direct PPV competition from UFC 103, a card that excites the MMA diehards even without a big, blow-away main event (Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort headline the show). Mayweather, Dana White and a totally uninvolved Bob Arum have chimed in about this, and none of it has been particularly high-brow stuff.

We've heard that there's been trouble selling tickets, that the PPV buyrates may limp across the finish line instead of the arms-raised, victorious sprint that a Mayweather return to the ring theoretically should have brought, and that the fight wasn't moved from July 18 to September 19 entirely due to bumps and bruises on Floyd Jr. thanks to tough training.

And BLH (and BE) reader Mason_Beer has some commentary about the underdog of the boxing card:

Juan Manuel Marquez, above nearly every fighter ever profiled on 24/7, is a throwback to the old traditional fighter - a man who fights for family, god, and country.  A humble man of the old world.  And thats not to say there isn't depth to Floyd Mayweather, for sure his love of boxing transcends his "Money" persona.  But something about Marquez is different, different from even Pacquiao - another national hero.  Maybe its because Marquez has had some agonizing losses (and draws), that he has crawled and fought to his place in boxing - having to leap countrymen Barrera and Morales to get there.  Maybe its because we all know what an underdog he is.  But few fighters have been as open as Marquez, the fact that what he fights for is something so basic, so honest, so real that it transcends the language barrier.

Maybe it's sentimental, maybe it's because I'm basically a conservative man myself, but for boxing to regain its greatness it needs to find more men, and by that I mean "men," like Juan Manuel Marquez.  And for all his flash, his talk, his drama, and all that makes Floyd Mayweather perfect for television - the honestly, the traditionalism, the underdog authenticity that Juan Manuel Marquez brought to this show has stolen it from Floyd Mayweather.

This might give some insight into why boxing fans were offended when Dana White trashed Marquez for no reason. Dana's mouth has come back to haunt him many times. We'll see if he winds up regretting his trash talk of Marquez.

the bar im going to in chicago is only showing the ufc so i’ll be watching that. however, the bar i usually go to in philly is only showing the mayweather fight.

i wonder if other bars are doing this. anyone know if sports bars actually can show two ppv’s at the same time? i dont remember it ever happening before.

The bar I’m going to — McCann’s in Massapequa, NY — is showing both UFC 103 and Mayweather vs. Marquez. I can’t fucking wait. Beer, wings, and two fight cards at the same time. A tent is building in my pants just from thinking about it.

Actually Meltzer is wrong

UFC 80 went up with Trinidad/Roy Jones and Roy got 500k to like 300k

I think he’s referring to the events actually happening at the same time. The UFC PPV was actually live earlier in the day due to being in the UK. The tape-delayed replay went up against RJJ/Trinidad.

I’m expecting a boxing blowout.

They run like 3 or 4 PPV shows a year. JMM is good for 400k alone, with Floyd that show is doing 600+. UFC will do like 300. Vitor means ZERO to casual fans.

Yeah, after the ridiculous numbers that UFC 100 and 101 put up, I was thinking 103 would beat the Mayweather fight by a slim margin. But after seeing that Couture-Nog only put up about 400k, I see Franklin-Belfort doing pretty similar business, and Mayweather-Marquez hitting the 6-700k range.

i think cro cop adds a little punch. not saying it beats the boxing number, but 300 is pretty low…

by GregS123 on Sep 14, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I agree. 300k is a low estimate. I think this one will land in the 450k-550k range. More important than Cro Cop is the fact that this show will receive a big marketing bump from Wednesday night’s UFN/TUF10 double-header.

Honestly, I’m thinking about buying the Marquez fight instead of UFC 103. The only time I’ve bought a boxing event was Yori Boy vs. De la Hoya, and that was after reading the hype on a newspaper. HBO 24/7 sucked me in.

Please don't buy into this prick's bullshit agenda...

Dude, I’ve seen your posts on Badlefthook, You’re not even an MMA fan, look at your name, IHateMMA? Come on dude, why even post on here if your agenda is to shit talk MMA and try and convince people here that boxing is a better sport? You’re “Thinking” about buying the Mayweather/Marquez fight? You’re mind is already made up but you want people to think your some kind of true mma fan who is wavering and having doubts about the strength of this UFC card compared to the boxing card on the same night. You were shit talking MMA just the other day on BLH. You might be fooling some people here, but not me. Either you’re dumb enough to think you’re actually pushing your “boxing is better, mma sucks” agenda or you’re a paid poster by some boxing site. Either way you’re not fooling anyone with your “doubt” about MMA or with a name like IHateMMA on bloodyelbow, a fucking pure MMA site.

Only a Lesnar fight, IMO, can beat a bit boxing card. Whatever you think about that guy, he’s the biggest crossover draw right now and has created an aura of interest about him.

Thats because WWE dwarfs both sports.

Boxing Wins

I’m a huge UFC/MMA fan and still a fan of good boxing matches. Though I’ll be going with UFC, the fact that Marquez, a Mexican national fighter, is fighting pretty much guarantees that boxing takes this due to the Mexican fight fan buying in strong numbers.

This is a base that the UFC would like to capture but isn’t going to until they have a dominate champ or champs. They’re certainly not going to due it with Dana referring to JMM as “what’s his name”. Usually, I’m not overly concerned with what Dana says but that was a stupid comment considering the Mexican market is a huge vertical with millions of fights fans. Way to alienate. Might as well building a wall on the border with a big UFC logo on it.

by SizeMatters on Sep 15, 2009 12:58 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah buzz has picked up quickly around here. Mainly because of Marquez and 24/7.

I think Marquez does 700-900k while the UFC will do 500-700k. Both are really good shows.

I don’t think that the PPV will do that well…

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

If the numbers are close (as in 200,000-400,000 margin)

Give UFC the win.

Boxing still has a significantly larger fanbase and for the first time in a long time they have a PPV card that is not main-event heavy. Have you seen the undercard? Oh man.

That said I’m watching UFC 103 up until the John/Juarez fight is on.
