Rumor: Randy Couture Will Fight Brandon Vera in the Main Event of UFC 105

Randy Couture vs Brandon VeraIt is strongly rumored that Randy Couture will return to the octagon in the main event at UFC 105 opposite Brandon Vera in a light heavyweight showdown.  After weeks of scrambling for main events and coming up short, the UFC turned to Couture, who was willing to fight the best fighter they could find at 205 pounds.

The UFC originally approached Couture with a bout against Rashad Evans, and Couture accepted, but Evans turned the fight down.  Couture is one of the biggest names to ever appear on a UFC Spike TV show.

The rumor was confirmed by reliable sources close to a number of parties early Sunday morning.

Randy is going to destroy that week fighter

I’m not even a Randy Fan but I think everyone knows that Vera was never and is never as good as he thinks he is. I hope Randy knocks his teeth out so I don’t have to hear his annoying trash talk anymore.

I am going to guess that you want Vera to win, and I want him to win too. However, this is going to be Vera’s toughest test to date. If Vera fought like he did against K-Sos, I can’t see him winning because Couture will enforce his will on Vera. Fighting conservatively against Couture isn’t going to get Vera the win. At Vera’s best, he has the tools to beat almost anyone, and we will have to see Vera at his best to win.
I just realized that if Couture loses, then that would be three losses in a row.

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 13, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He won't fight conservatively..

again, he said he thought K-sos wasn’t that good so he wanted to practice boxing and fighting in southpaw the whole time.. He also said that he wouldn’t do that shit when facing the top guys..

And i think people are forgetting that Randy is showing signs of aging.. His chin is getting weaker and his reaction time is getting slower, and since his last fight was so entertaining people tend to overlook those things. But i guess that’s a good for Vera, at least if he gets a win, less people would want to discredit a win..

Those are also the reasons why i don’t think this is Vera’s toughest test in his career.. Surely it’s the biggest fight of his life since he’s against one of the most popular fighters ever.. this will surely be his toughest fight in a while, but i don’t think it’s his toughest ever..

by Anton Tabuena on Sep 13, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do you see this fight staying in the standup or going to the ground?

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 13, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

now that is the million dollar question..

I think whoever can decide where the fight takes place wins this..

I think Vera has the advantage standing up, but Randy will have an advantage on the clinch and on the fence.. On the ground i think whoever is on top has the advantage. Vera has a more active guard but he surely wouldn’t want a great wrestler like couture on top of him.

I think whoever is able to impose his will and dictate where the fight takes place will take this.. Vera should stay of the fence and avoid takedowns but Randy always has a good game plan. Should be good fight.

by Anton Tabuena on Sep 13, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the age thing with Couture, and while it does show, Randy still fights extremely well. I have to agree that Vera has the advantage in the standup while Randy has the advantage in the wrestling and in the clinch. There are two different ways of looking at this. One, Vera has gotten his tune-up fights at 205 and should be fighting tougher competition. Or, Vera needs to fight more mid-tier fighters at 205 like, for example, Matt Hammill or Jake O’ Brien to be built up to fight top-tier competition. I know that I am asking a lot of questions, but do you think that going from K-Sos to Randy Couture is too big of a jump?

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 14, 2009 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it's a big jump..

BUT.. i don’t think it’s TOO big.. i think he can do it.. Even if his last fight was against a mid level fighter, He has fought the same or even tougher competition before..

BUT.. i don’t think it’s TOO big.. i think he can do it.. Even if his last fight was against a mid level fighter, He has fought the same or even tougher competition before..this would be the biggest opportunity Vera could have and i think it would be great for him.. He’d be real stupid if he declined to headline a numbered UFC event against someone like Couture.

I don’t think it was intentionally lackluster. He was trying to get better at south-paw, which would make him more dangerous in the future.

The lacklusterness was simply a byproduct of him not being as good at southpaw yet.

I know, but seems admitting to the UFC that they just paid you quite a bit of money to (essentially) spar isn’t probably the smartest move – especially since he already has a reputation of being a bit of a yawner.

Couture wins and Vera is what we thought he was, all potential and no growth.

by rocket8188 on Sep 13, 2009 8:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You eventually have to let fighters fight

If Vera was a prospect with his submision wrestling and kickboxing background, but only a couple of fights in small promotions, I’d agree with you; but Vera doesn’t need to be shielded at this point.

The same thing can be said for Dos Santos vs. Cro Cop; if Cro Cop loses, the casual fans who’ve never seen Dos Santos or know just how good he is will think it’s just a sign of Cro Cop being too old or a bad fight for fighting in a cage (heard rumblings of that after the loss to Napao, and I think we’ve all seen that he’s a legit threat with massive power in his kicks). Likewise, if Dos Santos loses, it pushes a top prospect back a little. But fighters who are at or near the top need to fight dangerous guys.

I personally think Couture should be able to clinch with and overpower Vera. Vera isn’t likely to put on a leg-kicking clinic against a guy like Couture, and while he has a solid wrestling background, he’s not as good as Randy. Interesting fight, but still would rather see Cane/Rogeria.

If this fight pushes through,

it would actually be a very huge opportunity for Vera.. A win over a guy like Randy, with millions of people watching would really do wonders for his career.

Same thing with Randy, if he wins this LHW fight, his career is revived, just like when he first dropped down and beat Chuck Liddell after losing two HW fights before that.

What is interesting though, is that Randy’s contract has a percentage of the PPV buys. And since it’s a free card, I guess the UFC will have to pay him extra for him to agree to do this right?

Why are people so hard on Vera? His only losses are to Sylvia, Werdum, and Jardine.

Sylvia had JUST lost his belt to Randy, Werdum caught him, and Jardine was by a close split decision. It’s not like Vera has a 3 fight losing streak to nobodies coming into this fight.

I like Vera in this fight.

Because his last two wins were against Michael Patt and Krystoff Solhljdhski, and he hasn’t looked impressive at all lately. I’m not saying the guy is a can or a scrub or anything, not at all. I’m only saying that Vera and Couture shouldn’t be in the same sentence, let alone the same cage, right now. Let Vera do something to earn it first, IMO.

the problem with matchmaking is its not always about merit, oftentimes its about who’s available. They clearly tried other things – but Vera is know, established, on a two-fight win streak, and has a good win-lose record. Sure would Rashad be perferable? Yeah, but you can’t hate the guy for not wanting to spoil what should be a big time, big money fight with Rampage on the chance he might get Bonnar’d (ie, lose to old man wrestler when you shouldn’t). Based on who’s available, there wasn’t really anyone else you could go with for Randy at LHW.

Besides, this is like a mirror image of what people where saying about Chuck-Rashad

Michael Rome over at Bloody Elbow reports that Randy Couture will make his return to the light heavyweight division at UFC 105, where he’ll face Brandon Vera in the main event of the evening.

Inside Fights has confirmed the planned bout with sources close to the organization.
The UFC even tried to book Anderson Silva against Matt Hughes in a middleweight title defense. Hughes agreed to the bout, but the deal fell apart on Silva’s side.

We’re guessing that Rashad refused the fight against Randy because they’re now part of the same unified monolithlic MMA camp, Xtreme Greg’s, and everybody knows that Xtreme Greg fighters don’t fight each other unless there’s a title on the line; it’s more than a team, it’s a brotherhood.

This is not how the business works. Losses never kill draws, he will always draw based on the same factors that have made him draw or not. It won’t kill anything if he loses, he’ll still be making a shit ton of money on his new deal, and he’s always one win away from a big fight.

This fight makes sense

Randy and Vera are both working towards title shots at LHW. Vera needed a step up in competition at LHW, and Randy needs a solid opponent to reestablish himself in the division. Whoever wins probably needs one more win after this fight and they get a title shot. So the fight makes sense on that level. Anyone complaining about Vera not being a good enough opponent for Randy needs to realize that Randy is on a 2 fight losing streak. I also find the fight intriguing because I think everyone is discounting Vera’s greco wrestling. It is very good. He also had good jiu jitsu, and I think lst people would agree his standup is superior to Randys. Plus Randys chin didn’t look so hot against Big Nog, if Vera is aggressive he can probably put Randy down, maybe not finish him, but get some knockdowns like Nog did. I think this is a great fight.

Key phrase

“If Vera is aggressive”

That hasn’t happened for a looooong time.

Same here

This is a good fight IMO. Randy needs someone who is a name, but yet still beatable in his first fight at LHW. Vera has good wrestling and good striking, and should give Randy a good challenge.

by Razzel on Sep 13, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

another contender

I agree because whichever fighter wins will be seen by most fans as a legitimate contender, so you have another challenger for the LHW titleholder.

And Vera is nowhere near as scary as, say, Anderson Silva. I really don’t know if I want to see Couture vs. Silva…

This is NOT a super-fight damnit! Save Randy for another legend to fight, like Anderson Silva, Or Wandy or something! Not Vera!

Vera would get his ass handed to him. This fight won’t happen.

^^ I agree

It makes no sense at all.

Vera goes from beating Michael Patt (who?) and decisioning Krystoff Sozyehkjhkjd, mski to main eventing against Randy Couture? It doesn’t make any sense.

if it turns out to be true, either Couture pissed someone off and is getting his punishment, or they offered him tons of cash on the side.

Just reading way too much into it. Randy is getting a great payday, wanted to fight, has 6 fights left, and almost assuredly got a promise of a title shot if he wins.

I promise you it is true.

People are very quick to forget that Randy was just dropped numerous times in his last fight by Minotauro, who was never known as a power puncher (he’s been known for the opposite, in fact). Vera’s got solid technique and superior reach. It’s a little hasty to say he’ll get his ass handed to him.

by JRN on Sep 13, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

Vera has a good chance of winning this, which is why I don’t understand it. Its a great match for Vera, either he lost to a legend * shrug * or he just beat a legend * omgYES! *.

The opposite is true for Randy. Either he lost to a (relatively) nobody * cry * or he beats someone he is supposed to beat * toenail pick *

Anyone but Vera

He looks so average lately. Definitely not deserving of a main event.

I expect this fight to permanently relegate him to middle of the card for the rest of his career.

Okay, so it was originally Silva/Bisping then Kang/Bisping then Penn/Sanchez then Rogerio/??? then Rogerio/Cane then Marquardt/Henderson then Couture/Evans and now Couture/Vera

In terms of losses ending things for fighters, people say this shit without thinking about it. Consider this possibility: Randy loses to Vera via KO, then 4 months later they do Wanderlei Silva vs. Randy Couture in like a German main event. If Randy won that, they could EASILY follow it up with Randy vs. Shogun, Randy vs. Rashad, Randy vs. almost anyone at 205.

Of course losing a bunch in a row will hurt him, like anyone else, but Randy will be fine. It’s a good test to see where he’s at at 205 pounds. Vera is still a very good fighter.

by Michael Rome on Sep 13, 2009 12:55 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

People need to realize that Randy Couture is never more than 2 wins away from a title shot. He’s Randy freaking Couture!

by Razzel on Sep 13, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unless people consider him a joke as a title contender. Already after the Nog fight people started (or rather, continued) to say that Randy was finally too old to be a contender. A loss to someone like Vera would just cement it.

I agree about the UFCs hype machine – hell, it made Hughes vs Serra almost interesting again – but that only effects tho of us who pay attention, not the casuals. And those of us who pay attention realize that a loss to Vera would make a fight with Wanderlei somewhat pointless (except as maybe an exhibition type fight).

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

Sometimes, you just need to give a prospect a chance

Brandon Vera vs. Randy Couture reminds me a lot of Rashad Evans vs. Chuck Liddell. People doubted Evans since he won TUF and after his shaky “draw” to Tito Ortiz. But he was given a chance to break out, and he took it. You can’t be a prospect forever and if Vera is going to breakthrough at 205 lbs, they need to just give him a shot against someone and let him sink or swim.

by mason_beer on Sep 13, 2009 12:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This matchup actually harkens a Gonzaga vs. Couture type of feel. You got the young challenger in Vera trying to make Randy his stepping stone. Well except for the fact that Gonzaga was comming off of a huge KO over Crocop and Vera has no exciting KO recently…

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

wow..

that would be fun. :)

I’ll be watching Vera during the delayed Pacquiao undercard is, while constantly avoiding spoilers from those who watched it live.. My phone will be off, no internet, nothing… Right after the UFC is done, it will probably be a couple of fights before the boxing main event..

I always watch pacquiao fights live, but this time i’m gonna make an exception since it’s gonna be Vera.. Probably invite a few people over, order some food, and watch two fight cards that feature the biggest Filipino stars in their respective sports.. (although ofcourse, Vera isn’t even close to being half as accomplished as Manny is..)

either way, could be a great day for Filipino fight fans.. :)

Cause Filipinos in the US either look American, Mexican, Hawaiian, or Chinese. hahaha.

When i go to San Francisco every year,(which have tons of Filipinos) I even have trouble finding out which ones are Filipinos unless they speak the language..

And if they live their or grew up there, they won’t be speaking much tagalog anyway. haha.

DId not see this coming at all, but it’s about time that Vera puts up or gets released he’s been too gun shy lately and Randy will dominate him if he doesn’t show up to fight. The only loser in this appears to be Hendo, like I said the guy is delusional and will end up without a contract and Nate getting a shot at Silva sometime next year all because of ego.

by Raker on Sep 14, 2009 12:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ego? He wants to get paid before he retires, and he is at the best position in his career to demand what he thinks he deservers.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Sep 14, 2009 3:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No he’s not, Hendo has no pull with the UFC he’s no where the star he thinks he is in his mind and will find that out when Nate is getting the next shot at Silva and he has no contract. Sadly these fighters haven’t learned their lessons from others and continue to think they can dictate terms to the UFC when they have no pull Hendo will be the next example of dumb business decisions 101.

by Raker on Sep 14, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fuck this matchup.

Pony up for Hendo vs Nate @105

I am mega pissed at this useless piece of matchmaking. Randy should not be headlining an event right now, let alone VERA!

I like both fighters, but Randy just got manhandled twice in a row and is cutting down to face a mid tier fighter. I think the hurt is compounded by the fact that I almost had Nate the GREAT in the UK…

Not buying my tickets to Manchester just yet and writing to the UFC to express my discontent at the trashy matchmaking which really doesn’t affect the division at all.
