UFC Fight Night 19 Preview: Roger Huerta Training
"Wondering why Roger Huerta (20-2-1) is nearly invisible leading up to his important fight versus Gray Maynard on Wednesday in Oklahoma City?"
"The embattled UFC lightweight asked his management to put a moratorium on media appearances. He might do a few things in the days leading up to the fight, but Huerta's representative Jeff Clark told SI.com on Thursday that the fighter felt distractions hampered preparation for his last bout in the UFC against Kenny Florian. He wasn't going to let it happen again."
"The 26-year-old Huerta has only been out of the gym for a day, for a voiceover gig for the movie Tekken three weeks ago. Walking around at 163 pounds, "El Matador" appears to be in the best shape of his career, said Clark. Against Maynard, in the most important fight of his career, Huerta will need to be."

For some reason...
I have a total man-crush on Huerta. I’m glad he is still fighting. I got to meet him at UFC 79 and he was really down to earth. Hope to see him win here.

Why...
is it so important for Huerta to win this fight? So he can go out with a W? Has anyone confirmed from the Matador himself that he plans to make this his last fight?
Nobody wants to lose of course (unless you’re last name is Salmon), but from everything that has been said, this fight is more like just a contractual obligation for the guy.
It still is a very interesting match up.

Roger said he didn’t want to negotiate a new contract didn’t he?

A win could give him some leverage in case he wants to get back into MMA sooner rather than later. It could just be a pride thing as well.

Not only does it give him leverage, but the conspiracy theories come into play… is he looking for a huge deal from somewhere else? Does he want to stay on good terms? Does he want to break the cycle of the UFC killing off guys who don’t want to conform to their ways?

He might be training hard so he doesn’t get hurt.

Roger wants the win
because if he loses his value declines if his “movie carrer” goes south
With a win he would have wins over Clay Guida and Gray Maynard who are right up there in the lw rankings.
Plus if he can come out with an exciting win I think the UFC would offer him more money.

I take it he didn’t have a long affiliation with Jackson’s?

the reason i want huerta to win the most is because dana is throwing gray in there to do his dirty work and i want him to spoil danas plan

did you root for Ortiz against Machida?
by Anton Tabuena on Sep 12, 2009 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I did, not because I hate Machida but I’m really not a fan of the UFC trying to give guys going out a shitty fight. As much as I love the UFC and like Dana as a promoter shit like that (and bad mouthing any/all fighters) is just plain bad business.
I don’t hate Maynard but I will absolutely rooting for Huerta in this fight even if it means I may never get to see him fight again.

ya how dare they try to help build up fighters like machida and maynard against guys that want to leave

lol thats funny you ask. i actually think danas a bad ass (even though completely obvious he roided in the over night weight gain) but no. i like how dana does business and like i said i like him.. but i just think this is a different situation. ortiz disrespected dana personally and publicly. i am not even some big huerta fan. i think hes good and fun to watch but i dont think he really did anything on the level or to the extent that deserves being throw to maynard the way he is. maynard is universally now being recognized as a contender sneaking up through the rankings. huerta has not had his name mentioned since the florian destruction and now for him to be facing huerta its obvious dana is having gray do his dirty work. i like dana but this is kind of different. (also i think the ufc should offer huerta a contract again but make it public if huerta refuses a legitimate offer). atleast for me huerta is exciting to watch i would like for the ufc to keep him

I just get this feeling that Huerta is terrified to lose. That’s a good recipe for a dull fight.

He's so focused on winning...
…that he’ll only take time off training to do a voiceover gig on a straight-to-dvd movie.
Awesome priorities.
