I've heard very good word of mouth reports about the Shark Fights promotion from my friends back home in Amarillo. Amarillo is an MMA town from way back in the 1990's -- Evan Tanner, Heath Herring, Paul Buentello and others made their MMA pro debuts there.
Here's some build up for the headliner, a classic bout between the very talented up and comer Dave "Pee Wee" Herman and the grizzled veteran Don Frye. First Herman talks to Heavy.com about his only pro loss and the change it inspired in his training regime:
...I did just lay around and watch a lot of movies instead of working out," Herman admits. He brought the same relaxed attitude into the actual fights themselves too. "I just kind of do what the other guy wants to do in general. And most heavyweights just come out swinging."
"If I had been in shape I would been just fine. If I had been in shape or just a little bit technical, if I had actually known what I was doing. Either or, I would have been all right," Herman said. "I'm actually glad. Had I not lost I would still be partying and drinking and just kind of showing up."
Herman also talks about his opponent Don Frye and claims that he will be sporting a mustache of his own for the bout. And he talks about his contract with Bellator Fights and his frustrations with that promotion.
His opponent Don Frye also talked to Heavy.com about his training habits and shares an interesting insight about what he learned when he added Judo to his Wrestling and boxing base:
"I'm the most undisciplined athlete you'll meet in your life. If I could drink all night and sleep all day I would. Shit, if I could have a chamber pot brought to me in my bed, I'd piss in that," Frye said. "Judo's a very regimented and disciplined sport. It teaches you the respect you need to learn. When you spend half your life doing wrestling like I did. judo can really help. To oversimplify it, wrestling is pushing, while judo is pulling. I'm sure that will piss a bunch of people off and they will say 'No, that's not it. He's an idiot.' But that's the way I see it. Adding judo, you're working both aspects of the game."

would like to see these fights but ill be at arena rumble (yeah shitty name) in spokane, WA watching jeremy horn fight the fat guida, trevor prangly, and fancypants beerbohm. should be a good card, but not too much coverage on it… wanderlei silva is supposed to be there also, so ill get to meet him face to new face.
Awesome
To oversimplify it, wrestling is pushing, while judo is pulling. I’m sure that will piss a bunch of people off and they will say ‘No, that’s not it. He’s an idiot.’ But that’s the way I see it. Adding judo, you’re working both aspects of the game
I had a dyslexic moment and for a second I thought the title said “Don Frye Fights Shark”.
Now I’m disappointed.

Don Frye Talks About Dave “Pee Wee” Herman
This boy’s gonna look like a Picasso painting when I’m done with him. When I get done with him, he’s gonna look like a turd on fire… He’s a runt. It makes me look fast… My advantage is my intelligence, my athletic ability, and my good looks.
on the Nick Name “Pee Wee”
I don’t know if he’s talking about his genitals or his brain matter. I think it’s about his penis size. That’s what all the girls in Texas have been saying.
