i would be shocked if Roy Nelson doesn’t overwhelm all of his opponents.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

Dude needs to trim down and lose the gut. I am already tired of him playing the “People think I am just a fat guy, well I am here to prove that a fat guy can fight” card. We get you are fat, and you are good at fighting. But you fatness is getting in the way of your potential. Lose the fat, gain some good weight (i.e. muscle), and rematch Rothwell. Nelson should smash Rothwell and the fact that he didn’t only adds to my point.

by szucconi on Sep 11, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

With the exception of Darrill Schoonover, of course.

by John Nash on Sep 11, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll be shocked if he does. Rankings just demonstrate proven quality, not talent, and HW is the easiest division to take talent and use it to fly up the rankings.

Shaub, Schoonover, or maybe Wren could potentially take Nelson out.

by Michaelthebox on Sep 11, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Jones too

dude has reach and hits really hard and Roy’s not the KO artist he needs to be to capitalize on Jones’ chin.

True that. I was just listing the guys I thought were the biggest overall threats this season, but there are a few guys who might just get to Nelson stylistically.

Kimbo that high is shocking.

I wonder what a power ranking would look like…

by ryanwk628 on Sep 11, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Nelson
Schoonover
Schaub
Wren
Kimbo
Wessel
Junk
Jones
Rogers
Sims
Madsen
Wagner
Jensen
McSweeney
Shivers
Mitrione

Just a very rough list from what I’ve seen and heard. Nelson is on top by default, but I’ll be surprised if he actually wins this season. As a talent he’s pretty much maxed out, and odds are good that one or more of the actual prospects on the season will make a huge jump.

by Michaelthebox on Sep 11, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m really unimpressed by the video I’ve seen of Jones. If he’s made big strides since those fights, he’ll be a lot higher.

by Michaelthebox on Sep 11, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, his striking is way awkward.

Questionable chin too

by Chadsac on Sep 11, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, just watched both of the fights on youtube again. Jeez, every time someone lands a jab he looks unsteady. Unless this guy is a completely different fighter, he’s going to have some big problems.

by jacksiwel on Sep 11, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed that he looked really bad

but his reach and his power might make him more dangerous than Kimbo standing. plus he’s training BJJ at a good camp which Kimbo isn’t. maybe i’m wrong. we’ll see.

i disagree, Kimbo’s standup is actually pretty strong, if he didn’t always try to bullrush people.

by Austin Martin on Sep 11, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

and in response to myself

Kimbo actually has a chance to do semi-well on the show… He HAD to learn something from Rutten, and in the amount of time he’s had to train… his hands were always there, its just the takedown defense needed and transitions on the floor he needs to work on

by Austin Martin on Sep 11, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

But there was obviously

reasons why Rutten stopped training him. Like he was not truly serious about becoming a well rounded MMA fighter.

his hands are ok but he did get taken down by james thompson, so I dont think hes gonna do very well against all these big wrestlers not to mention he is one of the smallest guys in the house

by xbuckeyex05 on Sep 11, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Rutten said he stopped training kevin because he couldn’t work with fighters that wouldn’t listen to him in their corner

by Austin Martin on Sep 11, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

That is not the only reason.

There was an interview on BE where Bas said Slice was not taking it seriously.

i didn’t remember that article, so my bad… In any case we’re sure to see Kimbo in at least 2 UFC fights so he may as well work on his ground game

by Austin Martin on Sep 11, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh, if Bas don’t wanna roll with you then thats a big problem IMO. Kimbo is just chasing that money. I respect him for going on TUF but who is he fooling here? He won’t get 3 wins in the UFC. He’s just a sideshow to me. I don’t hate him but I dont like him. He’s just there…

I think this is accurate but not that informative

These guys are so green that it’s really hard to gauge their abilities based on a very limited number of performances. Remember before Brock Lesnar entered the UFC he was 1-0 against a non-heavyweight. After his first fight in the UFC he was 1-1.
And yet he went on to beat three straight top 20 heavyweights and win the title.
Someone like Rogers may very well be a huge talent waiting to explode.

Isn’t in the finals I’ll be shocked. His actual record is 9 or 10 and 1 and the 1 loss he was so sick with pnemonia that the docs almost didn’t license him to fight. He won Greco nationals after only wrestling for 3 years. This kid is a beast.

There are several “beastly” talents this season. It may even be more talent laden than season 5. I fully expect the top 6 or so fighters from this season to be in the UFC for a while.

Depends

Are you talking long-term? Sometimes TUF losers get 1 more shot at a fight night or something. If you count them, I’d say over.

Nelson, Schaub, Wren, Schoonover, Kimbo, Rogers, Wessel, Jones, and Junk could all get a couple fights. Many will probably stick around longer.

Over because they are touting this season to be one of the best and new blood in the Heavyweight division is needed. A better indicator could be how many will still be in the UFC after a year.

He’s just a well rounded fighter with a good wrestling and BJJ base and good striking. I don’t see him as a favorite, but he’ll be a tough out for anyone. I see him in the upper half of 16.

For sure.

Sounds like he has a punchers chance but if those big boys get him down, he aint getting back up. I dont know if he will do well on the show, but if he really works on his wrestling he can be someone to reckon with at his age & size.

Do they perform drugs screening before they air/film the show?

by Riney on Sep 11, 2009 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

I would assume this is a definite. All fights on the show are sanctioned and scored by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, two rounds or not, so the winner if not both competitors in any given fights is going to get tested. The last thing the UFC wants is to have a contestant fail a drug test after they’ve beaten someone, so I assume they are tested prior to getting on the show and again before entering the house, to prevent anyone from failing a drug test on national television, which would probably be more of a bridge-burner than anything else anyone’s ever gotten kicked off the show for.

by Chromium on Sep 11, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking that

but I was curious. A Diaz brother made it on and thru the entire show. I also would of had questions about other fighters but that makes sense.

Didn’t Drysdale try to get on, but the screening found a brain hemorrhage?
