UFC Lightweight Clay Guida Training at Greg Jackson's MMA Camp
From Cage Writer:
While on "Inside MMA," Clay Guida announced that he will train at Greg Jackson's to prepare for his upcoming fight with Kenny Florian at UFC 107.
...
Joe Stevenson made the same change before his win over Nate Diaz. Quinton "Rampage" Jacokson switched to Wolfslair in England after losing his light heavyweight belt to Forrest Griffin. He then pulled off two victories, a knockout of Wanderlei Silva and a decision over Keith Jardine.
I just finished reading Greg Jackson's new training book and I'm even more convinced than ever that he's coaching MMA at whole different level from all but the most elite camps.
This is an excellent move for Clay Guida, although I must admit I'll be disappointed if it means we won't get to see Joe Stevenson vs Guida.
Another angle to consider is whether a Stevenson or Guida rematch with Diego Sanchez will be a grudge match between the original Greg Jackson fighter and the new guys.

Can the Caveman evolve in such a short amount of time?

This is a great move. I never questioned his cardio, but I have always questioned his skills training. Jackson could be a critical part of the puzzle for Clay.

what i find interesting though,
is that Kenny has trained with GSP, Firas and the other guys in Canada, so will GSP help clay at Greg Jackson’s?
by weoweoweo
kinda like the whole Bobby Lashley, Shane Carwin , Ron Waterman situation..
i asked Carwin about it though, and he said:
Bobby trains at our gym but is not in the gym with me I needed a big body and H20 offered his up. Were not training to beat Bob
by weoweoweo
good for him
as long as he doesn’t become another "i won’t fight guys i train with" guy.

Who DOESN’T train there these days? It sucks that everyone and their moms either trains there or XC. Takes away from too many good potential matchups.

They don’t fight each other so pretty soon there will be no one in MMA left to fight. Events will be Jackson vs. The World.
I still think there should be an event called "3 Headed Monster: ATT vs. Jacksons. vs XCouture.

seriously i would personally like to know what happened to mfs, chute boxe, btt, hammer house, etc etc
I think chute boxe and btt didn’t decline as much as splinter. MFS declined and then people started leaving. I say its because the “roll to country”. Quest is not making them like they used to, but I think thats the game evolving faster then them. But MFS is special because I have heard some shit went down there. Could make an interesting book.
i know what you mean when your saying who doesnt train there lol. seems like everyone truely is either going to x.c. att or jacksons, and your right seems like it is taking away from certain match making.. i just want to shout to some fighters (lets not forget about blackhouse, mmaa, sityodtong, quest, cobra kai, gracie barra)
HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
I did what you asked, and that deserves a rec..

Are we going to be seeing a book review for Jacksons book? I’m on the fence about reading it.

Where’s the book review, Nate?

what clay really needs
is for Jackson to gameplan some way to add 3 inches a piece to his T Rex arms
by Austin Martin on Sep 10, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions
i suppose you could say that for either… i think its funny to see them throwing combos that just cannot land

Or buy him a g’damn haircut.
We have a kid at the jiu jitsu camp I train at who had long hair, until he got choked the f’ out in a tournament because he brushed it out of his face and the other guy rushed in on him.
Long hair + combat sports or grappling = annoying, stupid, obnoxious, disgusting

i agree
but it kinda adds to clay’s “mystique” if he has that, and is part of his personality

He won't cut it..
Dana Offered him big bucks to have it cut, but he still didn’t do it.

This could be good for Guida,
but if comes out with the same ole lay n pray attack & does not show anything new then what? I don’t expect Greg Jackson to be a miracle worker, but it would be something if he can transform Guida some.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
I guess it all depends on Guida and whether he is wanting to evolve. You’re right, Jackson isn’t a miracle worker. When you have guys like GSP and Evans who are constantly looking to evolve and improve their game, that’s a good environment to be in. Good luck to Guida. I was never a fan of his, but maybe I will eventually be if he learns some new tricks.
I love me some Sexyama!
That is kind of what I was getting at.
We shouldn’t just assume that Jackson can completely change him as I would think that his current/past trainers attempted that already & failed. Good points about GSP though, it makes it easy to look great when you have a fighter who is always willing & looking to improve his game.

Guida + Jackson + granite chin = possibly lethal.
I really like this move. If Guida can acquire some decent standup and Jackson can work on his top control (doing something other than LnP) along with Jackson’s gameplanning, Guida could become a serious contender.
by Screwface on Sep 10, 2009 3:14 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
he has pretty decent standup, he just can’t land punches because he has the reach of a trout
by Austin Martin on Sep 10, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
And I hope he learns some techniques that can help him get inside, because his chin is good to go for a war.

Exactly, if he can learn some REAL dirty boxing technique, he could be a real force.

Finally!
I have stated many times to my friends that Guida needs to get out and train at an elite camp, because he has such a great base and untapped potential. As a Guida fan, I was let down by a few of his past fights where he relied on wrestling so much. I understand it’s because the reach disadvantage and him working on what he’s good at…but he’s so much better than that.
Kenny is going down, and I’ll be putting down a nice chunk of money on Guida if the line is right.

I’m not sure what the benefit of this will be. Is Clay going to be more effective with his backpack technique, learning how to cling on to someone for a few extra seconds? Will his marginal striking abilities improve marginally? Nipple tweak?
Florian will beat Guida the same way Sanchez did: with crisp striking. The only difference is that it shouldn’t take Kenny as long as it did Diego because he actually knows how to throw more than one combination. As opposed to Sanchez who throws his one-two, uppercut combo upwards of 19,308,719,001 times per fight.

Kenny is going to be on his ass the entire fight getting blasted by Clay on his way to losing another fight. Kenny has nothing that Clay hasn’t faced in better fighters this is possibly the worst match up Florian could ask for after his last performance.
Anyway this interesting but i’m not sure how much it’s going to do for Clay overall, the guy already has all the tools he needs to be an elite LW. Maybe if it helps him get more respect with the judges it might do good in the longterm but overall I don’t expect Guida’s gameplan to change much in his next couple of fights.
I really like Kenny a lot. He’s come a long way since TUF. But You have to think his only chance is a submission, and Guida is just way too frenetic for Kenny to catch him in a sub. And zero chance Guida gets knocked out or even down. Guida by TKO.
