'The Green Ranger' Jason David Frank Responds to his Critics; Is Serious About MMA
When former Power Ranger, Jason David Frank announced that he will be making his MMA debut, critics have got on him, saying he's just in it for the publicity. One example of this, is Maggie Hendricks saying that Jason is only in it to revive his movie career:
And this is the moment where I weep for MMA.
Frank may just turn into a great fighter, though it's doubtful considering that he is 35 and worried about signing a management team before trying to schedule a fight. But this just furthers the notion that MMA is a fad, and can be used as a publicity stunt for someone with a flailing career. Considering that Frank's last acting job was a 2007 direct-to-video film called, "The Junior Defenders," he clearly needs a career boost.
At the same time, the beauty of MMA is that there is no hiding in the cage. When pretenders have tried it out in the past, they've been shown the floor of the cage, very quickly. Right, Jose Canseco?
Jason David Frank, a sixth degree Karate black belt, responds to this:
Karate is different than MMA and I know that. It kind of bothers me, though, when I read all of these interviews. Like [Hendricks] posted this ridiculous story saying, ‘MMA is a fad and does he really think he’s going to be this and that,’ and it’s like I’ve been in martial arts for my whole entire life and I know that mixed martial arts is different.
There are reasons behind why I want to fight. I lost my brother about seven years ago, we were going to do this together and it’s [a] personal thing. It’s not for the money or anything else, or like how Maggie said it’s a publicity stunt… because she said my last film came out in 2007. She is completely wrong. That film was filmed in 1994 and was finally released in 2007.
On Being Compared to Jose Canseco, who fought in what people call a 'freak show' fight against Hong Man Choi:
I’m not Jose Canseco, I’d beat Jose’s ass. You can go online and look at it. He came to my school and he sucked and I don’t like Jose. But this girl compared this whole celebrity thing to Jose. I mean it’s hard for me because before I was a Power Ranger, I was a dedicated martial artist. I was a full contact fighter even though I didn’t do the stuff that everyone else was doing.
Jason David Frank has been training in Shotokan Karate since he was four years old, and is currently a sixth degree black belt. He has his own blend of Karate called, "Toso Kune Do", and has been inducted into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame. He has also won a few Muay Thai tournaments, and is the founder of the popular MMA clothing line 'Jesus Didn't Tap'. While he already possesses a good stand up game, he has been diligently working on his ground game. He is currently a BJJ Blue Belt and has been training out of Gracie Barra and Rising Sun MMA. He has been helping Melvin Guillard prepare for his UFC Fight Night bout against Nate Diaz, and will be there in his corner come fight time.
Much like the same criticism Brock Lesnar has recieved, people tend to overlook their credentials because of the stigma that comes from their past jobs. Maggie and other people criticized him for being a 35-year-old former power ranger, but what they are forgetting (or refusing to see), is that this guy is one of the most decorated Karate practitioners out there. There are far worse who have entered the sport and there aren't much who can match his credentials.
His transition may not be as successful as Brock's, but either way, I don't see why anyone should weep for MMA just yet.

Yeah, Maggie Hendricks can get a bit tin foil hat and peace pipe fairly often. Her article on TUF 10 is another example.
Green Ranger can do whatever he wants, provided his nickname is Green Ranger when he fights. If it isn’t I’ll be extremely disappointed.
I’ve also been told that Jesus didn’t tap because he was in position to tap.
This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.
I don’t think she’d actually say MMA is a fad… but rather that critics believe it’s a fad and this furthers the notion of that overall thought.

yeah, she didn't call MMA a fad.
but this situation doesn’t ‘further that notion’… If she chooses to look passed the green ranger outfit, she’d see a life long martial artist who wants to get into MMA..
and it’s pretty obvious he’s not just trying to earn a quick buck off it like Canseco.

nice try. in all seriousness this is some flat out lazy “reporting” by mags. is it too much to ask for her to do any research at all before blowing someone up like this? she really missed an opportunity to do a neat story on this guy.
and yes, his mma nickname has to be the green ranger, lol.

have people forgotten why the UFC was started? a hall of fame sixth degree karate black belt wants a fight, and he’s got the popularity that he was the green ranger (my favorite)… why not let him fight. the consensus is karate isnt enough, but with as many UFC fight cards as there are right now, are we saying we couldn’t spare one fight to see who would win?
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
yep, he knows karate isn't enough,
so he’s training in Gracie Barra with his primary training partner being Melvin Guillard.. The article on him also says that he works with former world boxing champ Raul Marquez, BJJ coach Larry Shealy and Charles Dos Anjos.
seems pretty dedicated to being well rounded IMO..

i’d be very interested to see the fight. the UFC would be crazy to not do a season of TUF with him in it if Tommy… errr, Jason would be willing.

if he wins his debut and decides to continue his MMA career, then maybe...
It’d be pretty cool to see the TUF competitors bag on him for being a power ranger. haha.

I never understood the reason why people bash others that want to fight. Let him get in the cage and show his wares if he has a terrible performance then put the irons to him.
Same with Lesnar, I was really skeptical that he was serious (I couldn’t understand anyone leaving all that WWE money on the table) but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and was pleasantly surprised.
I presume he’ll be fighting at LW?
I will only be ok with this if he comes out
A) With a power ranger suit on
B) With a power ranger helmet on
C) With power ranger music playing
D) With one of his cornermen dressed up like a monster or giant robot thing
E) With the green ranger flute thing playing.
If he doesn’t do at least one of those things then he can go F’ himself.

don’t be stupid, the green rangers powers werent strong enough to destroy… somebody, so he had to upgrade to his white ranger ninja powers. … i think

Yeah but the White Ranger was way lame comparatively, Green Ranger always had the more badass backstory.

Your knowledge of Power Rangers is clearly superior to my own, I yield good sir.

would this be one of those scenarios when having the superior knowledge is a bad thing? … yeah, i was afraid so.

bahaha this thread is great. honestly though i just looked up the original saban mighty morphin power rangers song and it sadly got my head bumpin… if i had this guys back story i would seriously have NO problem what so ever walking out to this song. its not as bad as i thought. the guitar is funny at first but hell imagine him running out to this in his suite and then shedding it off once at the cage only to beat some guys ass. i would be an instant hardcore fan of his for sure
Yeah, Tommy gave Jason his shield so that he could…uh..you know I really doubt this knowledge will ever help me get laid.
You never know buddy. One of my exes loved Tommy and me knowing who he was one of the things she liked about me. That amongst other things.

Sweet
Maybe knowing Goku’s power level after he landed on Earth will make my girlfriend want to jump my bones…
or break up with me.
Wasn't his power level 2?
Well Goku is quite as sexy as Tommy was…
Funny you should mention that though, because the ex I was talking about also enjoyed DBZ. It’s one of the three or four animes she likes and even now we’ll occassionally randomly talk about favorite fight scenes or lines of dialogue. Man, why did we break up again?

dbz is dope...
I remember being a kid, and not realizing the story was so old. lol.

I remember being told by my friend that all the action sequences when they were in power ranger costume was just footage shot in Japan with Japanese actors and that they just dubbed over it and spliced in the non-costume US filmed stuff.
This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.
my mom worked for saban when i was a little kid and when she broke that news to me i was devasted. i felt better though when she told me they mostly used their own american stunt doubles but for some of the very early episodes in fact did dub over the japanese footage. any body remember the epic flute call and the green dino thing coming out of the waters to f*ck shit up?
That epic flute call and dinosaur were the reasons Green Ranger > White Ranger sir.

I was willing to give him a chance until they mentioned that he started “Jesus Didn’t Tap.” Now I hope he gets beat up for creating the most annoying brand in the sport.
i think he needs a warmup fight vs bulk and skull.

I am pretty excited to see this guy fight. Anyone know what weight class he will compete in? what about some footage of his muay thai or karate skills in action? I have to admit i signed everyones 7th grade yearbooks with “green ranger power”, yeah i was cool.

hmmm…that was surprisingly disappointing. i dont know why I expected more. what was up with the video where he’s just whooping the hell out of some smaller student at his gym? i mean, who video tapes that and posts it on their actual dojo website. if he had just yelled at his opponent about ‘going home to starla everynight’ i think i could forgive him
the muay thai thing….well at least there was real danger there but dude’s gonna get KOd if he cant learn to keep his hands up
but i’m bitching. i’m glad he’s doing well and is teaching.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. I can’t wait to see what one of my childhood heroes can do in an actual fight. Go Green Ranger. Go Go.
The big question on my mind is....
Who is going to be his his first opponent?
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
honestly he does need to slim down a bit. i think i read some where dont know how valid it is but that he is a short guy and could make the 155 lb LW limit but he would have to shed a lot of the excess muscle he’s carrying. dude it probably strong as hell if he is walking around at 185+ and could make 155 with proper dieting and experienced weight cutting coaches
the canseco vid says he's at 180 lbs..
he’s probably bulked up a bit since then, and If i were to guess, he could probably cut to 170 if he wanted too.
