Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Frank Mir talks Fedor:

"[Fedor] said he had nothing to prove, what do you think about that?"

Mir: "That’s a sad statement. I think everybody, every morning should wake up with something to prove. The minute you think you don’t have something to prove, retire, go home and disappear."

-- At a Maxim Party after UFC 102, UFC Heavyweight Frank Mir says Joe Rogan shouldn't suggest Big Nog's staph infection affected the outcome of their bout and Forrest Griffin's loss is not embarrassing.

That’s not what he said, even though that’s what Nick (and Zach) would have you think. Listen to what he says.

I think I would honestly give up a digit to see Fedor put a beating on Frank.

It would probably take more than that

to get Fedor into the UFC

Frank also said that he was disheartened that Rogan suggested Mir’s staph infection affected the outcome of their bout. If he truly think that Nogueira’s injuries didn’t have some sort of effect, he’s seriously delusional.

To be fair Mir was less than hundred percent in that fight as well…he actually wanted to pull out that fight because back injury and he was talked out of it..

by The Bronzeville Bully on Sep 1, 2009 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

same with nog

he also wanted out of the fight, but different injuries will affect a fighter in different ways. If a staph infection will make you weak and slower, I’d think that’s worse than a physical injury, where it would hurt and be annoying but not enough to make you drowsy. Frank should be mad at Nog and not Rogan, because Nog is the one affirming that the staph infection had something to do with the loss, this would help market a second fight between the two.

by Orcus on Sep 1, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

To be fair about what?

Mir has basically been saying the whole time that being injured doesn’t matter because everyone fights injured… but OBVIOUSLY… it does matter. It matters a whole lot. If you get a guy who isn’t 100%, okay… fair enough. But when the performance level is so much more improved when they are at 100%… why should Mir be disheartened? It’s a true statement. Mir fought Nog while he was barely 50%, and he won… but it does take a little away from the win.

Spot on. I’m tired of the excuses for Nogueira.

This is open to debate. Anyone that watched the Nog-Couture fight can tell that the Nog we saw on the Mir fight was not 100%, you might not agree with 50%, but you have to agree that it was not 100%. Second, this 46 year old man was doing quite well (if not better actually) than your current champ less than a year ago on the stand up, and just got caught by a punch that sent him to the canvas. This 46 year old man got a title shot when he was 45 (I think, I don’t know when is his B-day lol). On to Nog. Nog had a staph infection, this has been proven, and backed up by sources outside of his own camp (who better than the president of the event to back this up eh?). I don’t need to be a doctor to understand that a staph infection will make you very weak, 2 minutes of google is all I need. Now, Nog who has never been tko’d before, loses a fight to a guy who rarely Ko’s someone, and you think that the staph infection had nothing to do with the loss?

You want to say if Nog was ok than he shouldn’t have taken the fight, I agree. But they are pressured by the event to take the fight if there is nothing broken with them. If Nog was to pull out of the event with a month to go do you think the fans would be nice to him for doing so? I’m sure 80% of the comments would be calling him a sissy. Get real, these fighters are pressured to fight regardless of how they are feeling, and yes, they lost, but to discount something serious such as a staph infection and say that had nothing to do with it is ridiculous.

by Orcus on Sep 1, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

a) I’m not making fun of Couture – I’m pointing out that his striking is slow. In point of fact, he’s NEVER been a great striker off the ground or away from the fence. Right?
b) You can’t argue that Nog would be called a sissy for not fighting and say that he got bullied into taking the fight. That sounds like a sissy to me.
c) When did Nog EVER look fast on the feet? Remember that dreadful boxing match against Werdum? I’d rewatch it, but I don’t want to get fired for sleeping on the job.

OH CRAP! You had EVEN MORE EXCUSES that I forgot to address!

About the Staph infection: he was supposedly RELEASED from the hospital more than a month before the fight. I’ll grant you that he may have been “50%” – whatever that means – when he was released, but he was well evidently enough to go right back to training – witness his supposed knee injury.

We need to get the devs to add some extra buttons next to Preview/Post/Cancel: “Make excuses for Nog” “Make excuses for Brock” “Make excuses for GSP” would be a good start.

LOL, nog didn’t have a knee injury, where did that come from? How is living up to your responsibilities being a sissy? He signed to fight and he fought, he was pressured, but he continue to live up to his responsibilities, so no, I wouldn’t call that a sissy. Nog’s boxing is awesome man, what are you talking about? His only problem is that he has major difficulties with ppl that are taller than he is, such as sylvia and werdum.

My only major point relies really on Mir and Nog as fighters. Mir hardly ever wins by tko, and Nog hardly (never, well, now once) looses by being tko’d. put two and two together, and here we have a fighter that has dropped his endurance quite a bit and got finished by this other fighter that is usually not a KO guy. You don’t see that? fine. But there is definitely something fishy there for me, and the staph certainly gives this a much higher possibility of why it happened.

GSP got caught once and got KO’d by a far inferior fighter in Serra. We all knew that, they never fought before but we knew that. their rematch made it obvious, Nog has to fight Mir again, and it will make it obvious for all of you that he is in fact the better fighter out of the two (yes, even you!, I’ll put money down on it). :P

by Orcus on Sep 1, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

DUDE! You’re not up on the knee injury? You haven’t been reading Nog excuses monthly very closely, have you? See, FIRST he had staph. THEN he tore the miniscus in one knee. Then I think he got sand in his vag.

Look, you can’t say that Nog is a great striker. I mean his whole reputation is that he gets punched in the face until the other guy’s arm tires out and he submits him. Right? So he got caught – it happens. Big deal.

by jemaleddin on Sep 1, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I forgot about the meniscus thing, I remember it now from the post press conf. Look, there is no need to disrespect Nog, if you don’t like him that’s fine. If you think he sucks, that’s fine too. You don’t need to say things like “excuses, excuses… sand in vagina” about nog. Nog is a freaking legend man, show some respect. Yes, he has great boxing, this does not mean he’s not going to have trouble with ppl with a better reach advantage. Anyways, you made a great point though:

he gets punched in the face until the other guy’s arm tires out and he submits him. Right?

that’s the whole point about him being able to take punishment, yet he got knocked down three times in the Mir fight (that I can remember). And you think this is all Mir, and there was nothing wrong with a guy that can usually take a beating and end up pulling a sub eh?

by Orcus on Sep 1, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Lemme ask you something, should Forrest Griffin victory against Shogun be taken away because Shogun went in injured? You think Tim Sylvia “injured back” played a role in his lost against Randy Couture?

by The Bronzeville Bully on Sep 1, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It might, Sylvia had surgery not two months after the fight with Randy, and Randy was saying prior to facing him that he noticed that a few "openings" on Sylvia’s game that wasn’t there before. Although this fight went all five rounds, so it’s not that bad of an injury. Shogun’s and Nog’s however, big difference in their bouts when they were in fact injured.

by Orcus on Sep 1, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

To be honest, I’ve never had a ton of confidence in Forrest since that fight. I knew he was tough and entertaining, but I had this feeling like maybe he was overrated and not top 5.

FWIW, I don’t know what’s wrong with either side of this argument, being as the objective truth is impossible for anyone to get at. In a sense, everyone is right.

Nog did get his ass handed to him. He was coming off some knee issue and staph infection. The rest is pure speculation, so arguing your particular aspect of the speculation seems a tad ridiculous to me.

I like Mir, but arguing that every fighter fights hurt is just dumb. Obviously coming off of staph infection is going to be a lot different than having a tweaked ankle, or a bruised thigh etc.

but how about a little less about yourself big guy.

by bearcox13 on Sep 1, 2009 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

He is just talking it up

because he knows eventually he’ll be fighting in Strikeforce after he continues his losing streak and the UFC releases him. Who is he going to beat other than up and comers in the UFC? No one. The only reason he even had a chance against Nog was damn near dead from the infection. I certainly do not see him beating Randy in this lifetime.

I wouldn’t mind Mir’s banter if he was actually eloquent. I want the WEC folded into the UFC just so I don’t have to listen to Mir screw up the announcing every 5 seconds.

by mmalogic on Sep 1, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions

So do I.

After hearing all this smack bullshit talk from Mir and stating how everyone fights hurt… so his win over Nogueira is just as legit as any other win, I’m sick of Frank Mir. Nogueira at 100% vs. Mir at 100% goes to Nogueira IMO.

We already saw that fight. Mir is the better fighter. This percentage crap is well just that. Crap.

by JaTinkles on Sep 1, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure if the roles were reversed and Mir had a staph infection before the bout against Nogueira and then used that as an excuse, people would be saying Mir’s a big crybaby. But since it’s Nogueira, people are so quick to point out this injury definitely had a factor and that he was “50%” healthy. It just puzzles my mind that Nog suddenly deserves a rematch to a fight in which he got thoroughly dominated in. I see a double standard here.

I get it… you dont like frank mir.

Im still not convinced that Mir CAN’T beat Nog again. I know Nog was sick but how does Nog beat Mir in a 3 round fight? He’s still slow as shit and gets hit with flush shots.

Both of them at 100% is still a very close fight to me… and I’d favor Mir.

The only factor in Randy’s fight was that Nog’s punches hurt Randy and Randy’s didnt hurt Nogs. Im not sure that will be the same case with Mir and Im not sure that would have even been the case with the Randy of Randy vs Gonzaga.

Mir needs a reality check

I was never a fan of Mir but I used to think he was very intelligent about the way he fought people. But this interview along with all of the crap that he talked about leading to the Lesnar fight just shows that the guy is completely delusional. I think he forgets that the only reason he is hyped up by the UFC is because he caught Lesnar in a sub, and with that fight he was actually set up as a can for Lesnar to crush.
“We need to educate the youth of the world…” wtf… who does this guy think he is? After this interview I will actually be rooting for him to lose.
Im not a fan of Lesnar and his post fight antics were pretty stupid, but thats just the kind of guy he is, at least he isnt trying to hide it. Mir is pretending to be something he is not. Watching the Carwin pre-fight interview on this site and listening to Mir spew out cliches just helps contrast how one fight is genuine, and the other (Mir) is just talking endless smack so he can get one last big payday.

by Dudeski on Sep 1, 2009 10:13 AM EDT reply actions

One last thing

Forrest’s loss may or may not have been embarrassing. All I know is that I havent heard anything from him since that fight, no interview, no book signings and no funny, quirky quotes. If there is nothing to be embarrassed about and he lost like a man… why is he hiding somewhere.

I dont think anything about that fight was embarrassing. Forrest got beat by a much better fighter, not on that night, but overall a much better fighter. Forrest bought all the hype that was surrounding him and just got beat. Clearly, he isn’t an A level fighter. He should come to terms with that, and get some exciting fights under his belt. Or go home and disappear… wait a min, his kinda doing that already.

Mir has an interesting point of view

It may come from walking with your up your ass all the time. He’ starting to sound more and more like the Ultimate Warrior in his interviews. Mir gets asked a simple question and he tries to be intellectual but ends sounding like a deluded arrogant moron.

anyone who finds that embarrassing, thats an excuse not to compete then. And i think thats a bad message to send the childern or our youth in the world. There is no such thing as embarrassment if you go up there and give it your best…he trained his hardest, he showed up, he lost to a better man on that night. whats embarrassing about that? Only a coward would find that embarrassing. Thats why there on their home watching it from their couch on television. Theyll never compete, theyll never be out there, they will never risk embarrassment.
