Anderson Slva to give up belt, move to 205?
"With his arm wrapped around White’s shoulder, Soares leaned in and delivered a proposition. "Spider" Silva would move permanently to light heavyweight, even if it meant the unorthodox move of giving up his middleweight belt."
"I can do that," White smiled, a bit stunned at the offer. "I like that. We can do that."
"Soares smiled and shook White’s hand."
"I’d let him," White said later, sitting in his quiet dressing room. "We’d put [the middleweight title] up for grabs."

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday Rich Franklin,
Happy birthday to you.
Keep firing Assholes!
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
Ha, yea, poor Rich, but poor everyone at 205 if this is the case. I personally love the idea- Silva presumably only has a couple of years left, so let’s see some wonder fights- and there is not a bad fight you can make.
vs. Rampage? YES!
vs. Rashad? OKAY!
vs. Jones? PSHT, SURE! (not anytime too, too soon, got me?)

No this is a great thing for Rich..
He can now go back to 185 and have a legit shot at the title now.. The Hendo rematch would make it more appealing if for the belt..
Belfort is going down there, Wandy is going down there, Rich going back down makes the division more interesting !!
Franklin has a legit shot at making another run for the title san’s Silva in the division…
Seriously
Franklin must be looking over his shoulder on the street these days…Silva is chasing him everywhere.
There’s no way Machida and him can dodge each other if this happens.

Everybody is missing the point
He gives up his middleweight belt and moves up to 205. He fights three times and retires because he’s no longer bound by the champions clause. He get’s three big money fights and then gets to go face RJJ for his dream bout. Brilliant move on SIlva’s part and one that I figured would happen.

The UFC has never actually had to use the championship clause but then even if Anderson kept the belt he would be falling under the retirement clause instead of the championship clause anyway. The UFC would let him out if he retired and they may not care if he wanted to fight Jones Jr then as long as he was going to stay retired from MMA.
That's the thing
I think he only wants to “retire” from MMA because the UFC won’t let him fight RJJ. Since that is the case he will just play this contract out and fight him but I don’t think he wants to retire from MMA completely. I think he just wants to fight RJJ and come back. That’s why this is perfect for him. Hopefully he comes back to the ufc afterwards and fights heavyweights. HAHA!
Well in that case they could freeze his existing UFC contract upon retirement and he could come back later. The UFC can freeze in place a retiring fighters contract so that it just sits there in case they want to come back (and so they can’t un-retire and sign someplace else). There also is the no compete part of the UFC contract, so even if he finished this one it would be 6 months to a year before he could fight Roy Jones Jr (unless he got Dana onboard). Taking a year off MMA for this one fight may be rough to come back from, he’s not getting any younger. I also think that where Roy Jones Jr is in his career that there may not be the money in this as people would think there would be in a boxing match (unless they got a big promoter to back it).
Of course the way Anderson Silva has talked he really is thinking about just retiring. The Roy Jones Jr fight would put a cap on an amazing career for him.
If Anderson wanted to come back after he fought Roy, the UFC would re-sign him in a heartbeat.
I specializes in grammar fail.

Thank You Sir
I had a funny feeling this was going to happen. If this does happen he should face the loser of Rampage/Rashad first. I think we can safely assume that a fight with GSP isn’t going to happen now.
I think Dana would prefer it too, possibly.
It avoids the possibility of the Silva/St Pierre matchup that everyone is clamoring for. St Pierre’s wrestling/takedowns could present a real challenge to Silva. If he pulled it off, it could detract from Silva’s mystique, especially to lose to a smaller fighter. I’m not one who will trash Silva’s ground game, but his advantage is definitely standing. I don’t think theres any way Georges is gonna stand and bang with him if he can avoid it.

GSP
I don’t think he wants any part of Silva and I think Silva would tear him apart. He might be able to take him down but he wouldn’t be able to keep him there and once Silva got up it wouldn’t be like a Alves situation where he kept getting up but not able to do anything. GSP would lose the scrambles but this is just my opinion.
"I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I love, I will love with everything"
Oh, I'm not saying I would favor St Pierre
I just feel he’d have a better shot at pulling it off than most others would. And no, I doubt if GSP truly wants it either. I think he’d take the fight if asked, but I don’t think he’d be looking forward to it.

I’d hate to miss out on the title defense against Dan Henderson or a fight with Wanderlei SIlva who just moved down in weight but I can see where this would be something he would want. He’s all but cleaned out the Middleweight division and with retirement coming up he can get a couple of big money fights on his way out to pasture(ones that make good use of his ppv cut).
forrest had a terrible gamplan. After the first knock down he shoulda clinched and gone for a takedown or two. This is mixed martial arts not poorman’s K1. He succumbed to peer pressure elitexc style of “Keep it standing to make it exciting”. That only handicaps you in an mma fight. HIs gameplan shoulda been to keep saying he was going to stand and bang, then go for a takedown at the first moment he could.
While I agree with your theory in gameplan..
Let’s be honest here.. Silva always starts out slow.. As does Griffin… The problem was that Silva turned it on and beat Forrest to the punch.. Forrest didn’t have any opportunity to mount an offense in the fight.. He got dropped at every exchange..
He was scrambling from the first Silva hit and never recovered.. I’m sure his game plan was going to be to try to establish a takedown.. But those have to be set up.. You just dont bull rush someone like Silva with your head or hands down.. Silva would have picked him coming in.. You have to gamble like Hendo did and allow Silva to come in with his strike to close the distance and try to clinch without taking too much from the shot itself.. Forrest did try to clinch but was clearly rocked from the initial exchange that he couldn’t do anything with it and Anderson tried to go Franklin on him with the knee so he backed out and looked to recover..
Forrest didn’t have a bad game plan people.. He just never got the opportunity to establish himself or his game plan… He wasn’t slow.. Silva was just fast.. It made him look slow.. He threw some nice strikes at Silva, just couldn’t get anything to connect.. Silva is a lot more powerful than his frame would indicate as well as his base strength.. But it wasn’t even that. Forrest got hit flush on the chin with the right hand that dropped him the first time.. It was enough of a hook that rattled his cage a bit.. I think the shot that did his jaw in was the loud popping shot that he semi blocked after the first knock down.. You hear a loud thud when Anderson hits him with that left hook after the first knock down.. I think that shot was the one that probably started it for Forrest.. If you watch closely.. He get’s taqgged behind his right ear.. He sort of stumbles after the shot.. I think he was rocked at that point and Silva kept him scrambling trying to avoid the on coming strikes.. He then dodges everything thrown at him and lands a flush straight left that put’s Forrest down for the second time.. This just shows how off Forrest really was.. They weren’t bombs, but stiff straight punches on the button each time.. Forrest was rocked after the first knock down and never recovered.. That final jab didn’t look like much but it was a hard shot on the button “again”.. It was theory of biomechanics again.. Force X Mass = Acceleration.. Meaning all of Forrest momentum combined with Silva’s power made more of an impact than it looked.. Forrest was lunging forward with all his weight shifted forward.. That final shot was the one that dislocated his jaw.. He got popped and his bell was rung.. His equilibrium was rattled … Anyone thats taken a stiff jab on the chin coming in knows how much you can be rattled by.. He was clearly KO’d.. His hand motion was more a subconscious reaction than anything.. He was Ko’ed, that doesnt mean he has to be completely asleep to be out.. His motor skills were shut off, thus he fell to the floor like a sack..

LOL.. um
Typo..

The middleweight division has gotten better
none of them can beat Silva, but his greatness has pushed the other fighters in the division to get better. Look at Nate Marquardt, Damien Maia, Nate Quarry, Vitor Belfort, Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping, and Yushin Okami. These are all very good fights and have gotten a lot better and has the makings of a deep and competitive division. The real dog division in the UFC is the welterweight.
A quick question for those who might know, could the UFC do a four-man tournament with Henderson—Okama-Maia-Marquardt would any athletic commission allow it? Or would they have to do it over a couple of shows like the HW title?
the welterweight is the dog division?
Jon Fitch? Thiago Alves?
GSP is distorting your perception of a very very tough division.
Follow me on Twitter @KidNate
well i mean I guess in total
the #1 contender’s fight is Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann for WW
For MW, you have Henderson and then Nate-Maia. Its a deeper division, imo
Swick/Kampmann isn’t really a #1 contender fight, its more two top 10 guys who haven’t been wasted by GSP fighting to see who gets trounced next.
Keep firing Assholes!
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
If Anything
the WW division is arguably the “MOST” competitive of them all… Some would debate that against the LHW division as the most competitive, but I lean towards the WW division.. The talent gap is a lot thinner in the WW than in the LHW..
GSP is a great fighter, no doubt.. I think he is making his mark on his division.. But I also agree that the MW division get’s shitted on because Silva makes everyone else look bad.. I tend to think of it as Silva is just actually “that good”.. The MW division is pretty competitive now too.. You have Belfort & W. Silva coming in. Hendo, Maia, Marquardt, Okami, Franklin could now come back, Pahlares, Bisping, etc.. It’s a pretty good division.. It’s just lost in the shuffle with A Silva there…
No point for Anderson Silva to vacate the MW belt
If he isn’t going to fight Machida, then he is knocking out potential contenders for Machida.
I think people are still interested in seeing him fight Dan Henderson one more time. Then who ever is stupid enough to fight him at 205. Then the winner of Maia / Marqauardt. And Vitor if he beats Rich.
by Bishman on Aug 9, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
But Anderson wants big fights, and there are more stars at Light Heavyweight. Tito Ortiz, Rampage Jackson, Chuck Liddell (when he comes out of retirement). Hell, he could probably get fans intrigued about a fight with Brock Lesnar with performances like that. And if they offered him and Machida enough money, maybe they’d give us that overblown sparring session we’re all obsessed with.
This is obviously a play to get out of the "Title Clause" in the UFC contract.
Anderson WILL NOT fight Lyoto. This is just a play to make that RJJ fight happen.
They'd definitely re-negotiate the contract
I doubt Zuffa would just fall for a ploy like that. They’d contractually eliminate any loopholes.
I think you have to give the winner of Maia/Marquardt first dibbs at Hendo for the belt, then the winner of Franklin/Belfort would be next.

Did I misunderstand or would you just hand Hendo the belt?
("you don’t like Brock" – helping Weobo out)
I think he meant to say that since Hendo was supposed to be getting the shot, he was guaranteed to be in the fight to crown a champion. The Maia/Marquardt winner would be the other guy.
aaaah
ok, I completely misunderstood it then. Thanks for clearing it up for me :)
("you don’t like Brock" – helping Weobo out)
Sucks
There are finally some legit challengers at MW and now they are going let him duck out! Henderson circled the wagons for another match, Belfort is probably the one guy who could beat him in a striking battle and Maia finally worked himself up to a title shot.
This sucks!
