10 things I'd like to never see again after UFC 101
Overall a fun night of fights, but there were a few moments I found myself shouting at my TV. Here are some things I hope I never see again after UFC 101:
10. Anderson Silva offering to help his opponent up (false respect is the ultimate disrespect)
9 .Anderson Silva shucking and jiving (it didn't work for Rashad either)
8. Thales Leites in the UFC (what a flop)
7. Fighters running out of the ring after losing (have we learned anything from Sherk?)
6. Forrest behaving like a baby (Got Waaaah?).
5. Judges blind to instant replay (no one should lose on an accidental headbutt).
4. TUF winners (new strategy: always bet against them)
3. Any conspiracy theories about Forrest "taking a dive" (the MMA equivalent of "birthers")
2. Anybody questioning that Anderson is best p4p. (He is.)
1. The clip of Florian saying, "I WANT BJ'S BELT!" (quoth the Stones: "You can't always get what you want.")

How about BS Fight of the Night awards? It was a complete joke that Anderson and Forrest got fight of the night for what was basically a bizarre piece of performance art.
For a fight to win Fight of the Night, it should be… ….a fight! A little back-and-forth, some drama over who will win. Not a one-sided domination whose outcome was obvious after 30 seconds. Almeida/Grove got robbed.

I almost put that one there. I think this was Dana trying to cheer up Forrest after a loss, same way he gifted Coleman after the awful Shogun fight.

The only two exciting fights was the main events. The rest of the fights on the main card didn’t really generate heat. Fortunately the WEC card will probably be SOOOO much better because they usually are pretty consistent with action and intensity.

I agree with all but those first two.
I loved Anderson Silva helping Forrest up saying something like, “It’s ok, you ok? ok I kick your ass more now, yes?”
The shucking and jiving looked like it worked to me.

psss
Forest ran out cuz his jaw is dislocated badly, and can’t hear out of one of his ears and needed to go to the ER immediately- and did. RAN there basically
I love 10 and 9 because it pisses off those with whom I am watching the fight.
Disintegration -- I'm taking it in stride.

10. Anderson Silva offering to help his opponent up (false respect is the ultimate disrespect)
I don’t think it’s false respect as much as misplaced generosity. I don’t like it either, tho. It’s unintentionally insulting.
7. Fighters running out of the ring after losing (have we learned anything from Sherk?)
6. Forrest behaving like a baby (Got Waaaah?).
He should stand there with his broken/dislocated jaw and lack of hearing instead of immediately seeking medical attention? And that makes him a baby?
3. Any conspiracy theories about Forrest “taking a dive” (the MMA equivalent of “birthers”)
lol. Agree with ya there.
("you don’t like Brock" – helping Weobo out)
So Forrest just needs to be like “no…I got KTFO’d man”. That will lay it to rest. Then Obama can be like “ok, sorry for being a dick…here is my long-form certificate. See it? Everyone happy? Ok. Good. Let’s move on”
It’s not that complicated.

I think it’s funny that if Brock talks shit about a guy whom he actually doesnt like, it’s a bad thing and shows disrespect. But when Silva shucks and jives it’s the greatest thing ever. Somewhere Rashad Evans is shaking his head.

Shucking and Jiving!?!
What?!? A fighter can’t get loose when he’s in the ring?!?
Standing directly in front of his opponent and bobbing and weaving is SHUCKING and JIVING?!? Well, I guess that’s you’re opinion, I’ll leave it at that.
9. I’m really curious, when was he shucking and jiving? I thought Rashad Evans grabbing his nuts was a bit overboard but when was Anderson Silva “shucking and jiving?”
6. Not for nothing, it is a little bit amazing what short-term memories many fans have. Fighters get really emotional in the heat of the battle. Then there’s the issue concerning his hearing and his jaw. Forrest Griffin deserves some respect. No?? Are you really judging fighters by their last fight as opposed to what they have accomplished? Forrest deserves respect for fighting and attempting to challenge Anderson Silva.
2. I am REALLY interested in hearing ALL the Anderson Silva naysayers, doubters that had problems with his two previous performances. Maybe Thales Leites had an injury-free strategy? Maybe Patrick Cote decided he would try to be unpredictable* by not challenging the champion? I’ll give Patrick Cote props for one thing, he did work on his footwork against Anderson Silva but too bad he couldn’t mount an offensive strategy past that in 2 rounds.
*Mark DellaGrotte needs to stop telling his fighters to be unpredictable, because it is not working.
It’s “shucking and jiving” because Anderson Silva is black…

Seriously, where did using shucking and jiving to describe dodging punches come from? I’m not PC at all but I still find the use of the term here very awkward.

Strange
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuckin’_and_jivin’
Shuckin’ and jivin’ (or shucking and jiving) is a slang term primarily used by African Americans. It refers to the speech and behavioral mechanisms adopted in the presence of an authoritative figure. Shuckin’ and jivin’ usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, used to one-up an opponent or avoid punishment. Such behavior is believed to have originated in the era of slavery.
I always thought it was called “zigging and zagging” (dodging punches), dunno why people went to the shuck and jive thing.

He was shucking and jiving. I have no problem with it whatsoever. I thnk its funny that people hate Brock for what they perceive as disrespect but not Silva for his disrespect. My personal opinion is fighter do what ever they please as long as it doesn’t break the rules.

ridiculous comparison
How does head movement and strategy within a fight compare to disrespectul post-fight antics?
You don’t think embarrassing an outclassed opponent with your showmanship is disrespectful, But speaking your mind on something you truly feel is? I think that is ridiculous.
Bloody Elbow Pound-for-Pound the Best in Ultimate Fighting (UFC) Commentary, News and Community
I don’t think either is disrespectful, why the fuck should a fighter worry about hurting anothers feelings when he outclasses him?
If it prevents you from being hit, do it. Anderson Silva happens to have extremely good timing and headmovement. I don’t think he was trying to be disrespectful at all.

It is not the head movement that is disrespectful, it is the dropping your hands to your waist. That is showing you have no respect for your opponents ability to hit you and your letting him and then entire crowd know it. Like i said above though, i have no problem with anything that is within the rules, I was comenting on the selective outrage shown by fans.
Bloody Elbow Pound-for-Pound the Best in Ultimate Fighting (UFC) Commentary, News and Community
Holding your arms down can help you to stuff a take down attempt, but IMO that is not what Silva was doing. I got the impression he was showboating. I could be wrong.
Bloody Elbow Pound-for-Pound the Best in Ultimate Fighting (UFC) Commentary, News and Community
even if it was, who cares.
Forrest is a big boy, if he didn’t like it, he should have done something about it.
that said, why is a strategy of luring your opponent into taking a wild swing at you a bad thing?
I have no problem with Rashad doing it either, if you want to take the risk of putting your hands down, you have that right.
Actually its baiting your opponent into throwing more aggressive strikes and play right into your counter-striker abilities.

thank you for havin sense...
He does it cuz he CAN… he can usually slip the punches, and has a great chin that can handles the few times he is hit…
I like personality over generic sportsmanship on most occasions anyway.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
come on bro,
Are you serious? Behaving like a baby? Dude let me dislocate your jaw let’s see how long til you cry, Forrest got hit after he dislocated it.
Anderson has always show boated, remember the second Franklin fight? The only reason he did it was because whiners like you booed him and talked all that shit about his last two fights.
Tuf winners don’t always lose, for example kenny on 6 fight win streak, rashad un beaten til machida etc, losing happens to everyone and the amir stoppage was awful

“shucking and jiving” eh? You sure put the racist in frustration. Yet no mention of the ‘bitch slap’ in Pellegrino v. Neer
And to say Forrest was being a baby for his dismantled jaw is also ridiculous.
Is there an opposite for rec?
He slapped him because Josh Neer kept calling him a bitch. So he said, “now you just got slapped by a bitch.”

SHOWBOATING
Let’s be clear about something.
Slam dunking was once considered showboating.
FREAKING blocking shots was once considered showboating.
(TELL ME I’M LYING!!!)
THERE ARE certain moves in fighting that some people would consider creative but others consider showboating. SUPERMAN punch is a creative move that has been copied ridiculously. Standing in front of Rich Franklin or Forrest Griffin bobbing and weaving – not getting touched – is a freaking skill. Showboating? Not so much. He’s confusing and frustrating his opponents
Is the turn-around-kick showboating? Why not just execute a regular kick?
Being extra respectful during a fight is weird, but that’s just Anderson Silva.
I think Silva is a different person in the ring...
I don’t think he is inherently disrespectful, but his aggression comes through when he taunts his opponents… I personally find it hilarious, but I also think offering to help Griffin up was a little mental jab lol.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
This is just me
But UFC 101 showed me that judges shouldn’t focus so much on top control, and give rounds to fighters on the bottom when the fighter on top is doing next to nothing. It also showed me that one of my favorite fighters, George Sotiropolous, should be fighting A LOT more and maybe be on televised cards instead of un-aired prelims.
he's been injured a bit as well...
But Sotiropolous is very enjoyable to watch…
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
What has the world come to when not allowing someone else to punch you in the head is “showboating”.
but what about
when he stuck his chin out to taunt forrest to hit him?
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

I agree with most of this but the " Shucking and jiving " if Silva starts grabbing nuts and blowing kisses, then I’ll come on board with that one.If you can move your head like that, not take any hits and then KO someone…keep doing it.
Yes Silva is the best p4p, no one in MMA can match his striking at the moment. No one comes close.
Holy snapping duck shit...
How the fuck can people complain about Silva’s “shucking and jiving” it’s called head movement, and he made Forrest miss, bad. If he was doing it to be disrespectful, ala Rashad Evans…I don’t like it…but that bit where Forrest threw a couple punches and Silva just saw all of them coming and made the perfect movements to dodge, and ended it with a counter hook that dropped Forrest…thats fucking skill.
Get over yourselves.
"You guys are jerking eachother off with some pseudo deep bullshit." - Kid Nate
I just meant it as a Top 10 list like Letterman, not actual commentary. I of course recognize Silva’s head movement as part of an offensive strategy—it can just look like taunting. Mostly I was just making some jokes about MMA cliches from the last week or two and the weirdest moments from last night.

When you’re as good as Anderson, you are allowed to show off.
Keep firing Assholes!
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
When you’re as good as Anderson, people think everything you do is showing off.
Seriously, if it’s a viable way for Anderson to dodge punches, it’s not showing off, it’s just skill.

TUF competitors aren't contenders

The Ultimate Letdown?
Yeah, I’m looking at you Amir. (Just busting his chops, he looked good before he got stupid and wanted the clinch too much. You can’t just lay there on all fours and take shots like that and not expect the fight to be stopped.)

He took none of those, they all whiffed.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
At first glance I thought it was a bad stoppage but Amir looked out of it. He was getting up way too slowly and wasn’t defending at all – not a good example of intelligently defending oneself.
by MMAEruption on Aug 9, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Yep, the fact is, he left himself open to those uppercuts, because he foolishly strived for the muay thai clinch, and he got dropped. You can’t get dropped and expect the ref to risk your health when your face down not blocking your head or trying to grab a leg.

Then he should have got the fuck up, a hell of a lot faster. His fault, not the refs.

It is absolutely the fucking ref’s fault. Fine, you think he was being hit. Every single punch was at the back of his head. The ref should have been in a position to see that, and to also see that the punches were missing and Amir was looking to stand up.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

you do realize...
that a lot of these Tuf guys have recognition from TV, and since the ufc builds their fan base up, might as well use it… A lot of times they use TUF fighters to build other fighters they’ve signed (Johnson KO’ing Tommy Speer), instead of putting two prospects against one another…
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
All I'm gonna say...
is that Kurt Pellegrino is the fuckin man!!! I don’t think I cheered so loudly for someone not in a main event…. don’t drink and drive Josh Neer (you don’t want the hat trick)
He was like 'You hit like a bitch.' I'm like all right. And I stood up and slapped him. I go 'Now you just got hit like one.'" - Kurt Pellegrino.
10. Anderson Silva offering to help his opponent up (false respect is the ultimate disrespect)
- He means it respectfully, he really is the nicest guy in MMA, it’s also a sign to the ref to stand it up so time isn’t wasted.
9 .Anderson Silva shucking and jiving (it didn’t work for Rashad either)
- Sure as hell looks like it works for Anderson.
8. Thales Leites in the UFC (what a flop)
- I agree.
7. Fighters running out of the ring after losing (have we learned anything from Sherk?)
- What would you do if you got KO’d by a backwalking jab… :(
6. Forrest behaving like a baby (Got Waaaah?).
- 6 = 7 so really this is a top 9 list.
5. Judges blind to instant replay (no one should lose on an accidental headbutt).
- Unsure of which fight this is, maybe undercard so I missed it.
4. TUF winners (new strategy: always bet against them)
- Bad stoppage, but yeah good betting strategy.
3. Any conspiracy theories about Forrest “taking a dive” (the MMA equivalent of “birthers”)
- Agreed, dude didn’t take a dive, if he was going to take a dive he would have at least tried to not get embarrassed so badly.
2. Anybody questioning that Anderson is best p4p. (He is.)
- Bingo
1. The clip of Florian saying, “I WANT BJ’S BELT!” (quoth the Stones: “You can’t always get what you want.”)
- Definitely.
So yeah I guess we agree on a few of those at least!
I don't want to... but I HAVE TO.
“2. Anybody questioning that Anderson is best p4p. "
He is. That being said, there are at minimum 3 other fighters that could easily wipe the floor with him, so what does it even matter?
by P4P is a stupid concept on Aug 10, 2009 8:49 AM EDT reply actions
Another suggestion...
I would also suggest that anyone who thinks Silva is “one of the the nicest guys in mma” is the equivilent of a “birther”. He is a cocky, arrogant SOB, but a really gifted athlete and one of the best fighters in the world.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Aug 10, 2009 8:52 AM EDT reply actions
i agree that he is a bit cocky...
but I would also like to add that I think he is a bit annoyed by much of the things people have been saying lately… He has beaten EVERYONE he’s fought in the UFC, and has only looked to be in a bad spot once or twice… yet everyone has something to say… I think in fight mode, he wants to destroy everyone, and prove a point…
I don’t mind a lil cockiness when you’re one of the best…
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
