Update on Forrest Griffin (who was absent from the post-fight press conference) from the UG:

"I heard his jaw was dislocated very early in the fight…then he took several more punches to the jaw. Apparently he can’t hear out of the ear on that side either. He left the octagon because he needed medical attention asap. At first they thought his jaw was broken, then said it was dislocated."

[UPDATE] - Confirmed by telegraph.co.uk:

"Griffin had been taken to the hospital for checks, unable to hear in one ear, and in order to get his jaw checked."

[UPDATE] - Debunked by MMA Weekly. Griffin NOT injured.

lets hope he doesn’t go deaf

I took an upper cut once that rattled my jaw to the point I couldn’t open it without it popping on the right side. My right ear also immediately began to ring with a high pitched sound for approx. 10-15min. after the fight was over. It wasn’t Anderson Silva kicking my ass but I doubt Forrest will go deaf.

Forrest didn’t just stand there. At least once he hit Silva square in the jaw. Unfortunately for him, Silva has a great chin and Forrest has pillow fists.

It wouldn’t be a UFC event unless there was some retarded ass conspiracy theory tossed around on the internet.

If Forrest did throw the fight then he really did a shitty job out of it, why would you get up the first time if you were just in there to lose?

THIS

In a typical K-1 bout, three knock-downs ends the fight by default.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

when you dislocate your jaw and then someone keeps punching it and then you start to heart crunching ripping sounds.. then you lose your hearing on that side… i think thats the sign to throw in the towel

Arthur Abraham broke his jaw vs Edison Miranda and kept fighting. He eventually won the decision.

by gunranger on Aug 9, 2009 3:22 AM EDT up reply actions

So did Kim Couture, I believe. But I would imagine that not all broken jaws are created equal.

Abraham also got a lot of help from a crap referee in that fight. I’m not discounting the man’s toughness — which was instantly legendary that night — but the win was debatable.

by Scott Christ on Aug 9, 2009 3:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Are you saying Miranda didn’t deserve the points deducted?

by gunranger on Aug 9, 2009 4:09 AM EDT up reply actions

No. But there was a point at which the doctor determined that Abraham could not continue, and then Abraham was given a choice. That wasn’t quite correct. Abraham was also given a dog’s age to recover while they screwed around figuring out what the hell they were doing. The points taken were legit; Miranda’s a dick and his infractions were pretty blatant. He always had an argument that he should have won, though, so I was glad they rematched and Abraham knocked him out.

Breaking your jaw

and dislocating it are two different things. Especially if you keep getting hit with it in the wrong place.

Yep it’s two very different things.

by who me on Aug 9, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

probably a mix of both

forest has wigged out after a loss before, and a dislocated jaw would provide good enough excuse

Lost hearing and a dislocated jaw

I’d run out too.

Forrest has been quoted on not punking out on national TV, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was hurt bad.

I’m sure getting knocked out 2 times in a row hurts as well and getting dogged during this fight and the Rashad fight with both opponents mugging and getting KTFO is sure to sting.

by dohfil on Aug 9, 2009 2:41 AM EDT reply actions

Let’s wait to get information from a reliable source.

It clearly appeared that Forrest left the octagon so soon because he lost. As soon as he got up he was headed out of the cage.

Obviously it was all those shots to the head during the fight that were the cause not that he came to the fight with a dislocated jaw. As for why he would get up and immediately leave, well if the ringside doctor sent him to the back for medical attention then he would of immediately went to the back.

Obviously we don’t know what went on right now but perhaps people should cut the guy a break until we find out.

Forrest is going to take this to the courts and claim that Anderson Silva is actually from Jupiter and has already mastered dimensions 6-10. Word is that he’s going to have his mom join him in testimony.

by Dooda on Aug 9, 2009 3:09 AM EDT reply actions

it was not just a jab.
As we call it in Brazil it was a encounter punch.
Forest was stepping forward and he took a punch.
So by Newton law he not only took the power of the punch but he also added his movement to the punch.

sighhh.....lets set things straight, and quickly.

I will be extremely to the point here to school people, like you apparently, on why its obvious he didnt take a dive.
1) he was knocked out since the 2nd knock down….forest fought on pure heart and adrenaline…thats all.

and my 2nd and final point…..and i make this caps to make sure you can read it…ANDERSON SILVA IS THE WORLDS BEST COUNTER STRIKER. period. ask james irvin. forrest got caught with the same punch irvin did and fought back. leg kick counter to straight left. irvin = lights out. forrest = stood back up. conspiracy theories in this fight are insane.

Dana White’s Golden Boy has always been Forrest Griffin, so if you think he was paid to take a dive, go back to boxing, I really dont feel like embarrassing you again…

nor your talks about Jesus when we are all clearly Muslim

The fight was not thrown but interesting to think about nonetheless. Forrest just got worked over just like most people thought he would. Some people hoped that Forrest would win because that would just be super kick ass, but the reality of it all is that Anderson Silva will not be beat toe to toe. Even if you can take this guy to the ground there’s a 99% chance that you will be reversed and choked out. Don’t fight Silva if you expect to win, is pretty much what it boils down to.

Striking in mma is a different world than boxing. And no, I’m not a boxing loyalist, as I much prefer mma. Silva might well be the best/most accurate striker in mma, but it doesn’t neccessarily translate to gloves and a ring.
