UFC 101 Results: B.J. Penn Chokes Out Kenny Florian to Defend His UFC Lightweight Championship
Champion B.J. Penn had to send a message tonight against USAT/SBN #2 lightweight Kenny Florian.
Referee Dan Miragliotta introduced the fighters. A bearded Kenny Florian looked intimidated at the stare down.
Penn caught a kick and pulled Florian down to start the action but Kenny got to his feet. An elbow against the cage tagged Florian but he circled away and then clinched with Penn in the center of the cage. After they disengaged, there was feinting before Penn forced Florian against the cage. With 1:45 left, Florian pushed Penn against the cage and worked for a takedown to no avail. But Penn had his mouth open with a minute left and announcer Joe Rogan speculated Penn overtrained. Penn ended the fight with a powerful knee and a right hand to the temple.
In the second, Florian opened with a sharp leg kick and then clinched Penn into the cage. The pattern repeated with Florian working for the takedown then backing away. Florian missed with a superman punch and ate a punch to the back of the head before forcing Penn against the cage. This time though, Penn tagged Florian with some powerful uppercuts. The round ended in the center of the cage with Florian landing leg kicks and evading punches from the champ.
Going into the thrid round, the announcers were giving Penn the first two rounds but crediting Florian with a good game plan. Florian again forced the fight against the cage and worked for a take down. Penn again landed a sharp uppercut as they broke. At the 1:40 mark, Florian again went for a single leg and forced the champ against the fence. Penn again landed a sharp right hand and chased Florian. The challenger again forced the fight to the cage. Penn hit a switch and nearly dropped Florian then fired off combination punches. Florian escaped. Florian threw a superman punch and caught a punch for his effort.
In the first of the championship rounds, Florian was well behind but continued stalking the champ. Penn forced him down off a missed kick but KenFlo escaped. With 3:50 left, Penn took Florian down and quickly passed to 1/2 guard and landed elbows. Florian held on to Penn's ankle desperately to prevent Penn from taking the mount but he ate powerful shots to the face as the positional battle continued. Penn got full mount just past the two minute mark. Then Penn got his back and worked for a choke. Florian spun and spun but Penn battered him with heel kicks to the stomach before getting the choke.
Penn, coming off an embarrasing loss to welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre, needed to rebuild his reputation with the fans.
Florian brought more of a "little engine that could" aura into the fight. A man who came in second in the middleweight division of the first Ultimate Fighter season, few would have picked Kenny Florian to fight for a belt only a few years ago.

I want BJ's belt!
So he can choke me with it.
I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

I was waiting
For Penn to take it to the ground and as soon as he did Florian was cooked.

Diego will be a very tough test for B.J.
but in no way shape or form is he as skilled as B.J. in any area of the game.

cardio and offensive wrestling i think..
it’ll be a good fight i think.. Diego pushes a mean pace, and BJ better take that fight seriously as well..

Diego is going to strike with BJ and it’s going to end early for him.
by cyph on Aug 9, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Diego will certainly be the underdog.. but i’m reallyyy interested in seeing that fight..
kenny allowed BJ to pace himself at several points in the fight, but Diego would surely push the pace all through out.. Although, that being said, if he strikes with him, I don’t think Diego has much of a chance..
diego has to fight a perfect fight, and grind it out for him to win, while BJ just needs to do what he normally does..

We’ll see about that, but that was a great win by BJ and a very disapointing performance by Kenny I expected much better than that.

Sorry
But I believe that for a lot of fans, BJ is going to have to do a lot more than win fights to rebuild his reputation.

I think BJ Penn is on steroids

Not McDonald's...Yoshinoya Beef Bowl
BJ moved his training camp to California and he’d be eating there instead.

BG Penn is still the master
I wrote a pro-Florian post, and BJ is still the man. Kenny had a good gameplan, but he’s not 180lbs like St-Pierre, and ultimately I think he might have tired himself out going for all those takedowns, pushing Penn against the cage. Penn just waited and waited, threw some strikes, waited and waited, and then finished Florian when he knew it was over.
I think Sanchez might have a better shot than Kenflo because of all the fights he has at 170 and he’s bigger. But not much. There is nobody at 155 that can beat BJ. UFC might need to look for some outside help – try and get a Hansen or Ayoki or Alvarez in.

wheres the guy...
who said bj penns bjj for mma is overrated? bj is worth every bit of hype as far as ability goes, regardless of what people think of him as a person.
all the guys who thought forrest was going to take forrest….. im not going to be the guy who said “i told you so.”
oh wait, i just did…oh well

If you don’t think anyone in the UFC can beat BJ then sure as hell the guys you just mentioned aren’t going to do it don’t get fooled by the hype surrounding guys not in the UFC it’s just that.

That works both ways dude
The UFC is very good at convincing people that noone outside their promotion is worth a damn, which isn’t strictly true, particularly at LW.
I’d personally pick Aoki over any 155er in UFC barr BJ (and I’m not the only one – he’s the #2 ranked LW on most listings). Alvares and Hansen could both hang with the top-tier there too IMO

Breaking News: Kenny Florian is not GSP and doesn’t weigh 190ibs, consequently having a gameplan of trying to use mass to wear B.J. Penn down against the cage is NOT the right idea.
In related news: I Loved it. WAR B.J.!

Did it feel like BJ just waited until the fourth round on purpose to anyone else?
It just seemed like he wanted to show off his conditioning or something…

My other theory
…was that GSP told him that the secret to victory was going for the balls, but Kenny got confused and just sniffed them for 3 rounds.

Well at least he had his head across the abdomen for the single leg and not just between the legs (other than the switch attempt), I mean at least his single leg attempts were technically correct… kinda… sorta… guess he forgot that there’s an eff’n fence and a guy who can bounce around for 34623456 hours on one leg in the way of completing the takedown.

Yeah, in the same way that Anderson makes everyone look bad on the feet, GSP makes everyone look easy to take down.

Exactly, completely a flawed gameplan and idea that people believed that it was B.J.‘s weakness and not GSP’s ridiculous abilities.
by AboveThisFire on Aug 9, 2009 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was wondering about this too, it looked like he wanted Florian to keep trying to push inside and do the shoulder ram (by the way that BS about “flexible people have weak thoracic cavities” that Greg Jackson and GSP spoke about is BS, people need to stop assuming that’s the way to beat B.J. it works for GSP… it doesn’t work for other people.
Penn loves putting on a show, he could have annihilated Pulver earlier (see: him letting go of the armbar), and if he wanted to do anything other than make Sherk’s face a mess he would have thrown more than a jab for rounds 1-2. It’s entirely possible that Penn felt zero threat from Kenny in any area and that he really didn’t mind the cage humping (don’t take that the wrong way).
Honestly you could be right on him just waiting, he could very well of just wanted to prove a point… again… the same point he proved against Sherk… and he’ll have to keep proving at 155 until he quits fighting… which is sad.

P.S. just because I’m psyched my boy won, here’s what I had said in a previous post:
“It’s my opinion the fight will go down in the following way… for the following reasons:
B.J. and Kenny will open the fight with some range finding, B.J. will keep his shoulders rolled forward and pop the jab out in steps, Kenny will try and hit the lead leg with an inside leg kick over and over again but leave the left side of his head exposed and he’ll eat jab after jab.
Kenny will keep coming out aggressive against B.J. and eventually try to get inside on B.J. after he realizes he won’t be able to compete with the handspeed/accuracy/power of Penn.
Kenny will go in for a single and get B.J. on the cage at some point, Penn will use his standard cage clinch defense and block any harm from the knees, it’s very possible he might take an elbow or two before he is able to circle out after throwing multiple body shots to Florian, once he’s circled out he’ll start laying into Florian and working his strikes harder and harder into Florian, cutting off Florian’s ability to evade and circle out.
If/when the fight goes to the ground, if Penn gets on top of Florian it’s over, Penn will be glue on him, he’ll get hooks in on the mount or back and just ride Florian and hit him with strikes; This will force Florian to try a last ditch hip escape as the upa mount escape won’t work against a guy like Penn, the hip escape will result with Penn taking Florian’s back, hooking in, posturing up and bombing on Kenny or choking him until it gets stopped.
If Penn ends up on the bottom of the ground, he’ll work a high guard, hold Kenny inside and eliminate Florians ability to posture up any sort of slashing elbow, Penn may take some forearm hits but that’s about it before he’s able to use his "octopus guard" and get his legs up and over to sweep Kenny into guard, once inside Kenny’s guard you’ll see B.J. do some light hits before using a knee through pass to smash down Florian’s guard and once that happens the above paragraph will come into effect.
Now, my reasoning behind that play by play prediction: Good footwork and muay thai is great, it’s great when you’re able to project a lot of power into your strikes, Kenny doesn’t have that power, his shots sting but don’t last. B.J. has power in his hands and very quick reaction to go along with it, his hands will be too fast and his jab will eat up the range between him and Florian, if it goes inside Florian won’t be able to hold a plumb clinch on Penn because at 155 Penn is just the stronger and faster guy, Penn will shrug the clinch off and punish Kenny with uppercuts and fast hooks.
B.J. is training with Polamalu’s S&C coach, the guy who made Polamalu into a beast. Penn’s training explosively and is looking to be in at least the shape he was in the Sherk fight (a fight that everyone complained that Penn wasn’t going to have the cardio to keep up with Sherk), or Penn is going to be in even better shape after changing his routine and really delving into the scientific S&C approach that guys like… gasp GSP use.
B.J. will not pull guard, what’s the point when your wrestling and takedown defense is better than your opponents, Penn will be stronger than Kenny in any sort of tie up and will be asserting his force against Kenny in those situations, pulling guard will be the last thing on his mind and honestly it should be, pulling guard against another black belt is not a smart decision, it leaves gaps and space most of the time just due to how it’s done, not a good idea.
Penn won’t be kickboxing, sorry, his hands are it, don’t expect to see anything other than maybe some knees and forearm smashing, he won’t be throwing high kicks.
Penn’s top game, if he gets a top position on the ground will be anything but ineffectual, his ground game is very relaxed and uses a lot of power in short bursts, he’ll be putting the spurs to Kenny if he gets on top.
Penn’s head is made of rubber, hellbows or not Kenny won’t be able to work the clinch game.
We’ll see Penn coming out as the bigger, stronger, faster, and technically superior fighter in almost every area of this fight, Kenny’s not fighting a broken Stevenson, a hyper active brawler like Huerta, a kid who hasn’t developed muscle strength and tension like Lauzon… he’ll be fighting a guy who makes other lightweights cry themselves to sleep at night. Sorry Kenny, you’re toast."
Called it pretty damn close for the most part. Hells yeah.

Gotta love Penn, his gameplan never really changes and remains obvious against most opponents but people just cannot seem to do shit about it. Love it, love everything about it, he went for a sweet switch even though it missed a little. He was relaxed on the cage and not pressing back too much, just sitting his ass on the fence and curving his shoulders to relieve pressure. Penn came away from the fence every single time with points, Penn came to fight and I’m sure Kenny did too… but Penn made Kenny look like Kenny only came to hug it out.

The only thing I'd change
Is calling Marinovich “Polomalu’s coach” and calling him “psychotic father who destroyed his son’s life.”
Sorry, but a spade’s a spade.
Otherwise your analysis was awesome.

Kenny had nothing. Pressing BJ against the fence without landing any significant shots will not win a fight. BJ’s first attempt at a takedown was a success and Florian never had a chance after that. Florian wanted nothing to do with BJs stand up…. absolutely NOTHING to do with it. Florian absolutely failed at imposing his will.

For me personally, I believe BJ and Anderson are the best fighters b/c they are not afraid to fight in a different weight classes to challenge themselves, granted BJ was not successful against GSP in their second fight -we are not hearing anything from GSP about fighting Anderson. GSP has clearly cleaned out his division. After tonight we really won’t hear anything from GSP on fighting Anderson.

Completely agree
Penn, Silva and even Fedor have all fought bigger guys than themselves throughout their careers with varying degrees of success, something that GSP seems extremely reluctant to do
