UFC 101 Results: Anderson Silva Dismantles Forrest Griffin

3801986717_843975db14_mediumIn an out of division fight for the problematic Middleweight champ Anderson Silva, he put on a demonstration of MMA mastery and destroyed Forrest Griffin.

The Philly crowd gave its biggest pop of the night to Forrest and unleashed its biggest boos (and that's saying something) on Anderson.

Griffin looked much bigger than Silva as new referee Kevin Mulhall briefed the fighters.

Griffin came out and missed with a head kick. Silva caught a leg kick and threw Griffin spinning. With three minutes left, Silva tagged Griffin and dropped him. Silva bobbed and weaved with his hands at his waist and then dropped Griffing with one punch. Griffin charged into a final punch and was finished.

It was an off hand jab that finished the fight.

Griffin ran out of the cage. Joe Rogan called it the most embarrassing defeat of Griffin's career.

Silva came into the fight off two underwhelming title defenses against Thales Leites and Patrick Cote.

For Griffin the fight was his return to the Octagon in his first fight since losing his light heavyweight belt to Rashad Evans at UFC 92.

It was a bizzare fight, despite the fact that it was so one-sided. Can’t remember the last time I felt so wierd about a first round ko in a fight, not sure how to put it but it was an odd fight

by StevenGiles on Aug 9, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

What made it weird was the way Forrest threw his arms out as if unconscious and then suddenly threw his arm up as if to signal that he was giving up, not actually knocked out. Then his insistence on sprinting out of the cage instead of being a little more graceful. As if he was ashamed rather than embarrassed. I don’t think he took a dive though.

Before the fight my buddy was like “I think Forrest kills em” and I said "I just can’t envision Anderson actually connecting. If Rich couldn’t connect, how on earth would Forrest connect, much less actually hurt him. I think Forrest actually did catch him, but Anderson didn’t even blink.

Anderson is an alien and he bleeds green plasma. Prove me wrong.

by Dooda on Aug 9, 2009 2:47 AM EDT up reply actions

New report was that ...

The initial shot that dropped Forrest the first time, dislocated his jaw… I tend to believe if anything, that if his jaw was dislocated, that it was done on the final jab.. That jab was stiff and solid and on the button.. Forrest was KO’ed plain and simple…

by MMAuthority on Aug 9, 2009 2:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Looked very strange to me. I still say something was up.

I don’t mean a dive, but something weird.

my thoughts were

Did Griffin dive? But anderson hit him with legit shots. Griffin quit. Griffin realized he had zero chance and he looked scared when he was dropped the 3rd time like as If he had no business there.

But what did you guys expect? A overly aggressive brawler vs an explosive counter striker? What pumped me up was when anderson banged his chest I don’t think he likes to be booed?

Anderson Silva is P4P the best fighter right now and for anybe that thinks GSP could hang with this guy…. Please watch his last 10 fights

you really want to see GSP get embarrassed too?

by MMARich on Aug 9, 2009 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes. Yes I do. I guess they can both go on embarrassing other people for another year or two, but eventually fans will get tired of that. GSP has to move up, Silva doesn’t want to fight Machida. UFC already showed they are willing to do champ vs. champ fights, so why not this one?

by Albertrayon on Aug 9, 2009 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Why does he HAVE to move up?

GSP walks around only a few pounds over the middleweight limit; Silva just demolished one of the largest LHWs in the roster. Yeah, the smaller guy CAN beat the bigger guy, but when the bigger guy is a top 3 PVP well rounded badass… I just don’t think GSP can win AND I don’t think that’s anything against him.

GSP doesn’t seem too keen on it either

by Shaun32887 on Aug 9, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Well I guess he doesn’t HAVE to. But the whole point is, you have to put on fights that people want to see. GSP is outclassing everyone in his division, so they might hit a point where the only legitimate draws for a GSP fight will be against MWs.

by Albertrayon on Aug 9, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d rather see Anderson Silva against Brock Lesnar than GSP…

by madiq on Aug 9, 2009 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

That would be one INSANE matchup.

It would certainly put Brock’s Chin to the test to see if it can withstand Silva’s excellent strikes….

Of course, Silva would have to get on his motorcycle and keep away from Brock clinching him ‘cause if he doesn’, he will go down…..HARD.

by BNTHIS on Aug 11, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

You know something? I never understood this whole thing with Silva/Machida...

Yeah they’re training partners and good friends but they are employed by DANA WHITE last time I checked.

Who the F is Silva to say he doesn’t want to fight Machida? If Dana White tells you to fight someone, You will DO IT…..or not get paid. Simple as that.

I’m sure Dana knows this, too and is simply letting Silva have his say ’cause he knows Anderson will fight Machida if he tells him to.

by BNTHIS on Aug 11, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions

anderson vs gsp

Yea GSP has the best mma takedowns
No his takedown strength and technique isn’t better then hendo. GSP is a good ww wrestler.

Yes GSP is dynamic but anderson is even more explosive

Yes GSP is athletic but anderson will negate that with his elusiveness

Yes GSP is the best ww but anderson is the best fighter in the world

Please Dana don’t make this fight as much as I don’t like GSP I would hate for him to lose his credibility as the ww champ

I wish people would stop with this fixed fight bullshit. Griffin has shown a propensity towards standing up and trading, as well as trying to put on entertaining fights. Maybe he would have tried to use his size if the fight went on longer, but the fact is he had been dropped multiple times and wasn’t in a position to defend himself after that last time. Then he quickly gathered his senses and ran the hell out of the octagon, probably because he didn’t want to cry on camera again.

Anderson proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is head and shoulders above the rest..

Is the MW division really weak ?? Or is Anderson really good ?? I’d go with the second option myself… Just because 2 guys didnt want to engage with him doesnt mean he isnt the best.. He proves over and over again that if you want him down.. then you have to “take him down”.. If not you’re going to suffer the fate of his stand up.. Which is the best in the business… Bar none…

by MMAuthority on Aug 9, 2009 2:31 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly what I thought. maybe the MW division wasn’t that bad and Anderson is just that good? Maybe the LHW division isn’t all that awesome, just a bunch of guys at similar levels (not as much anymore with Machida’s rise). But yeah, it’s weird. He sees everything in slow-motion.
