Strikeforce Welterweight Title Fight Could Be in Jeopardy Because of Nick Diaz's Drug Test

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
According to f4wonline.com, the title fight between Jay Heiron and Nick Diaz could be in jeopardy because Diaz failed to show up for the pre fight drug testing held by the commission:
Diaz was scheduled to take a pre-fight drug test tonight in order to get licensed and no showed. Caesar Gracie stated Wednesday that Diaz would appear for the test tonight in Sacramento. Neither Diaz nor Caesar showed up for the test and representatives for Diaz said Diaz was "busy training".
Because of the time required to get test results back, CSAC believes the test would have had to be taken tonight. Strikeforce was contacted and promised Diaz would appear for the test Monday. CSAC has agreed to this new date but has stated there is a good chance test results will not be back in time to license him for the show.
Nick Diaz has never been shy about smoking marijuana, and in fact he's even proud that he can get away with it:
"I can pass a drug test in eight days with herbal cleansers. I drink 10 pounds of water and sweat out 10 pounds of water every day. I'll be fine."

Don't be scared, homey
It’s just a drug test.
But seriously, I think Strikeforce pissed off a Gypsy woman years ago.

sucks for jay heiron mostly. he was supposed to fight on the last affliction card as well. what next?
yep.. cause of josh barnett/affliction management, (depending on how you look at it) heiron gets screwed..
now he could get screwed also, cause of diaz..

This Strikeforce card is as shapeless as a Lovecraft monstrosity.
I STILL poop rainbows.
by Blackout612 on Aug 8, 2009 4:06 AM EDT reply actions 7 recs
even without this fight, it still has a pretty decent main card
-Gina Carano (7-0) vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (7-1)
-Josh Thomson (16-2) vs. Gilbert Melendez (15-2)
-Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-8) vs. Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1)
-Nick Diaz (20-7) vs. Jay Hieron (17-4)
-Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1) vs. Mike Kyle (12-6-1)
if it’s out, there’s still 2 title fights plus mousasi babalu… nothing great, but pretty decent.. i was really looking forward to overeem defending his belt and nick diaz fighting, though… well at least there’s still gina/cyborg and mousasi to look forward too.
by Anton Tabuena on Aug 8, 2009 4:22 AM EDT up reply actions
Thomson is out too. Melendez is fighting Mitsuhiro Ishida (18-5-1). 3/4 title fights got cancelled.
Isn’t Babalu their 205 champion? Is that a title fight?
Checked their website, and the Babalu-Mousasi is a title fight. So they still have 2 titles on the line if Diaz can’t get cleared (I personally don’t really consider Melendez-Ishida a title fight, it’s just an extended #1 contender match).
oh wait, i didn't notice that thompson was still there..melendez ishida is for the interim title..
so womens, LW interim, and LHW..

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Either Carano or Cyborg could miss weight, turning their fight into a non title bout.

Yep. Said that too.
Although im not really excited about the interim LW title fight..
That being said, I think this is one of strikeforce’s better cards. (especially if they don’t scrap Diaz’s fight.. But that was pretty unprofessional on his part)

CORRECTION
Come on guys. There are FOUR title fights on this card. Even if for some crazy reason DIaz is out, there would stil be 3 Title fights plus the Werdum fight.
I'm really looking forward to
Mousasi/babalu and carano/cyborg cause that was good matchmaking..
The werdum fight is just mehh.although come to think of it, those weren’t coker’s idea either..

neither is carano/cyborg...
i was about to give him props for those fights.. but after typing it up.. the good ones didn’t come from him..
the sucky ones did though.. Werdum vs kyle.. psh.

As a general rule, I wouldn’t. But when it comes to weed and jiu jitsu, there are few people I trust more.

Marijuana shouldn't be illegal
especially not in MMA. It’s not a performance enhancing drug. It’s like the guy had a couple beers after practice one day. This is different than steroids, that give a competitive advantage.

Whether or not it should be illegal is irrelevant. When he is retired he can smoke all the weed his heart desires but when he has a fight scheduled he owes it to Strikeforce to not put the fight in jeopardy by smoking pot.

Alcohol isn’t performance enhancing. Neither is heroin. But they are still banned as well, and booze is even legal.
The fact is, if you show up at ANY job that drug tests with recreational drugs in your system, you are in for a world of hurt. Diaz’s job drug tests. He is no different than the bus driver or the construction worker whose boss makes him pee in a cup. Actually, that is not true. The bus driver and construction worker would get sent ot rehab or canned if they tested positive. Diaz has it easy.
And thats why I love Canada
or at least Ontario, unless I sign a piece of paper saying I’ll submit it, I can tell the boss no if he hands me a cup.
ignorance alert
Alcohol leaves your system a few hours after you ingest it. This means you can have a beer every night after training if you feel like it and pass a drug test.
Marijuana is detectable longer than any other drug – it can trigger a drug test up to 30 days after it was last ingested. In other words, you are punishing someone for potentially smoking a joint weeks before a fight – which is none of anybody’s damn business.
No one is saying fighters should be allowed to fight high. But testing for all non-performance enhancing drugs is ludicrous, and marijuana testing is particularly unjust.
by klown on Aug 8, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
That’s not his point.
His point is that it doesn’t matter how long it stays in his system. He has a job that says he can’t test positive for it, like many other people.
If he doesn’t like it, he should find a new job, one that doesn’t drug test.

STOP drug testing for non-performance enhancing drugs
It’s unjust, it’s unnecessary. It needs to stop.
Bullshit.
Commissions are there to protect the fighters, even if they have to protect them from themselves. If a guy like Drew Fickett shows up for a fight drunk (he has), would you allow him to compete? Fuck no. He is liable to get seriously hurt. Testing for recreation drugs is needed, regardless of whether those drugs are legal (alcohol, salvia) or illegal (weed, shrooms, heroin).
by Steve4192 on Aug 8, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions 3 recs
False.
They clearly aren’t doing this test to “protect” the fighters. How does stopping Diaz from fighting because he has trace elements of marijuana in his blood protect him?
This isn’t a program that drug tests you right before you enter the ring to ensure that you are not impared. This is a program that controls the substances you use/consume on a regular basis.
The Drew Fickett analogy doesn’t even come close to being relevant.
How does stopping Diaz from fighting because he has trace elements of marijuana in his blood protect him?
Except they aren’t performing blood tests (to the best of my knowledge, which are substantially more expensive than urine tests), they’re performing urine tests which are even less relevant to his “protection.” I can see the argument for performing blood tests to ensure that intoxicated fighters are not participating, but urine tests don’t provide an accurate portrayal of what the fighter in question is on during the event; particularly not a week prior to the event.
All that said, though I believe it’s not appropriate for the CSAC to ask for urine tests, it was not difficult to predict that Diaz would be tested for marijuana. Sometimes you have to obey bullshit rules in the short term for everyone’s benefit, but Nick probably doesn’t agree with that rationale (to each their own, obviously).
Thank you ruckus
When it comes to marijuana, the ignorance and prejudice are overwhelming.

tautalogical statements aside...
Rules should be examined and challenged if you “think it sucks.”
Personally I think that drugs should be put on the banned substance list after a thorough analysis of the actual affects they may have on a fight and the dangers they may pose to a fighter.
We all know that is not what happened when marijuana was placed on the list.
Believe me, nobody believes in legalizing weed more than I do. Hell, I think we should legalize all recreational drugs and sin tax the ever-loving shit out of ’em just like we do with tobacco and alcohol. The only thing prohibition is good for is creating artificial market conditions where criminals can make billions of dollars rather than legitimate businesses.
But …. if you work at a job that drug tests and you continue to not only smoke weed, but brag to you boxx that you smoke weed, then don’t start crying when you get fucked in the ass by a drug screening. When I was college, I had to give up smoking weed every summer because I had a high paying gig (for a college kid) working at a moving and storage company that randomly tested their employees. Did it suck giving up weed every summer? Sure. But it didn’t suck as much as losing a nice fat paycheck. Nick still hasn’t figured that out.

I understand your point about the impracticality of what he is doing; the safe and smart choice for him is to just do what he’s told and suck it up. No doubt about that.
But every time he, Kid or any other MMA fighter gets jammed up because of this utterly ridiculous perception of marijuana I’m going to speak up against it.
I’m glad that someone is willing to stand up and say: your rule is ridiculous and I will treat it as such. Whatever his reasoning (or lack of reasoning, perhaps) may be.
It is a painkiller and can enhance performance during a fight. He needs to suck it up and deal with it.

Neither ruckus, subu nor I have made excuses for Nick Diaz but all the blowback to our comments is about how “rules are rules” and Diaz should “suck it up”.
Speaking for myself, I’m trying to draw attention to a larger point than this Diaz incident, which is that testing for recreational drugs is absurd. It’s a waste of time and money and it’s inherently discriminatory based on a fighter’s lifestyle rather than whether he cheated in a fight. It’s especially discriminatory when it comes to marijuana because it is detectable for so much longer.

regardless of how anyone views marijuana in society, it is illegal to use in all the other major sports. the nfl, nba, mlb, nhl, nascar, golf, tennis and even boxing all have this drug listed as a banned substance . if mma were to all of a sudden take it off of their banned substance list, they would be laughed out of town as a legitimate sport and guys like ny’s bill riley would have a field day with this. hopefully nick DOES have a viable excuse and the csac lets him test at alater date b/c i really wanted to see him fight heiron. i think jay would be the most talented and still in his top form type of fighter that diaz has fought in awhile. and heiron would get paid win or lose. maybee sf will still pay him, even IF the fight is scratched. one can only hope.
