Quote of the Day: Matt Lindland Talks Affliction, Dana White

Do you hold any ill feelings towards Affliction?
I don't hold a grudge; I don't have any ill feelings. It's just disappointing to see these organizations pop up, make obligations, and not be able to fulfill them. It's a lie. If you offer somebody an agreement and you don't pay them, you are a fraud or a liar. But you know, that's not the first time this has happened with an organization. I've been involved with quite a few of these start-up organizations, and I would consider them all frauds when they can't fulfill their obligations and contractual duties.
Dana White has been burying the hatchet with a lot of long-time rivals lately. Any chance you could be next?
I haven't really had an opportunity to speak openly with Dana directly. I've tried to make myself available for that, and that's just never come to fruition for us. So, if I ever got an opportunity to sit down with Dana one-on-one or even on the phone, and be able to discuss what any of the issues were because I certainly didn't have any issues with him or the organization personally. I don't know if that's just public perception or if there actually is some bad blood against me. I don't know. Honestly, I don't know. We're just not on speaking terms. He doesn't have me on speed dial.
Matt Lindland talks to Ariel Helwani. He expects to be fighting for Strikeforce in the fall, possibly against Jake Shields.

What were the alleged issues between Dana and Lindland?

He got cut.
Zuffa says he wore a shirt with an illegal sponsor (some online gambling site, forget which one).
Zuffa-haters say they were protecting Rich Franklin because they thought he was a boring fighter.

Yeah, I remember that
If there’s one thing the UFC doesn’t do, it’s protect fighters, no matter what the Stinky Skunk fans might have to say.

But they do hold people out of bigger fights if they think they’re boring, and not marketable with fans, don’t you think?

I have two words for you: Lyoto Machida.

The same Lyoto Machida who won 6 fights in a row without getting a title shot, and was on the shelf for 7 months before his 5th and 6th fights? And who knows whether he would have gotten that shot had he not finished Thiago Silva in the first round (on a card with a record number of decisions, no less).
Additionally, Yushin Okami would like to have a word with you.
by madiq on Aug 7, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ll buy okami a little, but not machida.
He did not deserve a shot over anyone that got the shot before him.
Forrest’s win over Shogun, and Rashad’s win over Chuck earned them their shots, record or not.
I also wouldn’t have had a problem with Rampage getting another shot before him either.
by Phildo on Aug 7, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
And the only reason Lyoto got to fight Evans was because Rampage declined the fight because of injuries. So if Rampage took that fight, Lyoto would have probably still had to fight Shogun just to get the next title shot.
by nottheface on Aug 7, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont’ have a problem with Rampage, former champion, who lost his title in a close fight and coming off wins against Wanderlei and Jardine getting a shot before Machida, so I don’t see your point.
by Phildo on Aug 7, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okami would have had a shot but he got injured. Also other guys have done more to deserve a shot than him.
I dislike Matt Hughes.
by MonkeyCHops on Aug 7, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
who do you think did more then Okami to deserve that fight in the MW devison ? He has won 7 out of 8 sence being in the UFC ,He’s on a 4 fight winning streak sence that loss to Franklin. He has a W over silva be it a DQ but thats still something they can build up the fight with. And not to mention Okami is 2nd on Most top 10 list !

Really don't think they want to hype up this "loss"

Yeah...
I was actually going to use Llyoto as an example of madiq’s point as well…

Machida had to win six straight fights in the octagon before getting a title shot, and even then it was only after the original challenger was too injured and they needed to scramble to save the main event.
Also, Yushin Okami. He finally did get a title shot offered before he got injured, but he had to go 7-1 first, despite being technically the last man to beat Anderson Silva.

they've tried to put Overeem vs Werdum for the title,
I shouldn’t be surprised of Shields vs Lindland for the title, but i am..
I’d like to see someone defend how this can earn you a title shot…

at least give a title shot to someone coming off a win..

Love that GIF…Lindland goes to sleep. Thats payback. Hes put me to sleep plenty of times…boring fighter.
Holy snapping duck shit...

I didn’t post this one because i don’t like looking at what happened after..

At least he was neckbraced unlike Gono. That was fucked up.

Actually, he wanted it taken off, so they did. Dumbass paramedics – they’re the ones with medical experience, not the fighter. Why is the fighter deciding this sort of thing?

I’m surprised that Dana burying the hatchet with Sherdog and re-credentialing them has gotten zero coverage.
I wonder how bad Lindland wishes he didn’t make that documentary.

How could Dana hate this man?

He looks like a homeless man trying to steal someones elses family. I have to admit, I am a Lindland fan.

He shouldn’t fight for a title maybe, Lindland/Smith or Lawler…
by CSKit on Aug 7, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I like Lawler-Lindland…great bounceback fight for both.
by madiq on Aug 7, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’d take Lindland, but I like your matchup a helluva lot more than him getting a title shot.

I’ve gotta hold out hope that they’re doing Shields vs. Jacare for the title.

What about Shields vs. Misaki?
At least they’re both coming off wins.
by Chromium on Aug 7, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I doubt after his “incident” DREAM will let him fight for Strikeforce this soon, since they wouldn’t even count his win over Kaz as number one contender.

Misaki doesn’t fight for DREAM; he fights for Sengoku.

Still doesn’t change the fact that he’s in legal trouble, good call though.
by CSKit on Aug 7, 2009 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is Riki Fukuda still on DREAM’s payroll or was he just borrowed from DEEP? He looked impressive against ‘Ninja’ and is on a five fight win streak.

Hey Matt …. maybe you should have returned Dana’s calls when he was trying to book you for TUF 4. Meanwhile, guys who did return his calls like Matt Serra, Patrick Cote and Chris Lytle have completely revitalized their careers.
Don’t pretend like they never gave you an opportunity to get into the company. They gave you a chance and you turned your nose up at it.

he wouldn't have made $300K in Affliction if he'd done that
of course he’d probably have gotten Travis Lutter’s title shot at Anderson. And maybe he is a good matchup for Silva.

But he wouldn’t have been able to run for office in Oregon. Could you imagine the photos his opponent would have put up of him fraternizing with Shonie Carter?
