UFC 101 Preview: B.J. Penn vs. Kenny Florian in UFC Lightweight Title Showdown
In the UFC 101 main event, UFC Lightweight champion "The Prodigy" B.J. Penn (13-5-1) will take on #2 USAT/SBN ranked contender Kenny Florian (11-3) in what many consider to be one of the best lightweight match-ups of the year.
B.J. Penn is coming off one of the most crushing losses in his career as he took on UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in a welterweight title bout at UFC 94. Penn was overwhelmed by the power and wrestling ability of St. Pierre, and he was soundly finished at the fourth round mark due to a doctor stoppage.
Florian is coming into the bout on a six-fight win streak with his most recent wins against Joe Lauzon, Roger Huerta, and Joe Stevenson. His quick win over Stevenson at UFC 91 earned him the #1 contender spot.
Florian has become one of the more impressive fighters in the UFC. He went from a stint on Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter to a title shot one year later against Sean Sherk. After that loss he put on an impressive streak of six wins and earned another title shot against B.J. Penn. His quick-learning mind coupled with his great work ethic have paid huge dividends as he's substantially improved from fight to fight. That's one of the main reasons why Florian is always a question mark coming into bouts. Has his skill improved so much that he can compete with a talented champion like B.J. Penn?
Kenny's past fights have been a brilliant display of his improving skills. Following his loss to Sean Sherk at UFC 64 in which Florian had trouble getting away from the top control dominance of Sherk's power, Florian knew exactly what he needed to do to overcome his deficiencies in his skill set in order to become a champion. The most notable improvements have been his guard passing and ground abilities shown against Alvin Robinson, Joe Lauzon, and Joe Stevenson along with a solid striking game he implemented against Roger Huerta that had Huerta scratching his head as to how to damage Florian. All of those performances were absolutely dominating, and it surely made the case for Florian's current status as challenger to the crown.
Florian currently trains out of Team Sityodtong in Boston, Mass. with Mark Dellagrotte. His primary focuses are on Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but he's definitely able to work in all areas of the sport. He holds a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Roberto Maia, and his Muay Thai is likely near black belt level as well. He also works out at his own facility, Florian Mixed Martial Arts, in Brookline, Mass. with his brother Keith.
B.J. Penn is one of the most dominating lightweight fighters of this era. He's defeated nearly everyone within the 155 pound division worldwide with the exception of some of the higher-ranked Japanese fighters. He did manage to defeat Takanori Gomi in a Rumble at the Rock battle back in 2003 when Gomi was the Shooto Welterweight champion, but he had yet to become the lightweight champion of PRIDE. Nonetheless, fans consider B.J. Penn to be the greatest lightweight fighter of all time.
B.J. Penn is known for very quick, accurate, powerful hands, unbelievable flexibility on the floor, and the ability to be dominating in the ground game. He's one of the most well-rounded fighters in the sport, and that's why Penn has been a monster in the lightweight division. Because of his dominance, Penn has tested himself throughout his career at many different weight classes. He's fought Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes multiple times, winning the UFC Welterweight crown from Hughes back in '04 at UFC 46. He fought Lyoto Machida in Japan at a K-1 HERO's event in the Light Heavyweight division, and he's even considered the prospect of battling fighters within the UFC's Middleweight division.
Unfortunately for Penn, his moves up in weight haven't brought him success. It's evident that his true weight class is the 155 lb. division. One of the biggest questions that pops up in nearly every single fight Penn is involved in is his conditioning. Penn has been accused of taking fights less seriously than most fighters, and a lot of fans believe that he purely relies on talent to defeat his opponents. While it's an impressive feat for Penn to simply crush challengers by just talent alone, it can't continually work against opponents forever. It was brought up following Penn's destruction at the hands of St. Pierre following their bout back at UFC 94, and it's once again being discussed regarding his preparation for Kenny Florian. Some fans have pointed out the recent interviews with Penn in which he seems to still be focused on the St. Pierre loss rather than the fight at hand. Penn will need that focus back to be successful on Saturday.
This bout comes down to whether or not Kenny Florian can match the skill of B.J. Penn. We know Penn is at the top of the food chain in terms of stance in the division, but he's also one of the top mixed martial artists to ever fight in the lightweight division. Florian has solid kicks, striking, and jiu-jitsu, and his training regiment along with all of the partners he works with are instrumental in his improvements over the years. If you've followed his Twitter account, he's constantly training to improve, and it's a testament to his work ethic.
The interesting part about B.J.'s training for this fight is that he's brought in much better talent to help him train for this fight. Many fans have pointed out that Penn's overall demeanor in some of the interviews around the Internet suggest that he's way more focused on this fight that what you would believe. I'm still hesitant to believe we won't see a conditioning breakdown, but he's just so much better at 155 that it's definitely a possibility of seeing a blowout.
Stylistically, Penn has advantages in most areas of this fight. At 155, he has blazing fast speed with his hands. His jab can reduce an opponent to rubble (Sean Sherk), and his timing is uncanny. On the floor, Penn has the advantage via flexibility and skill, but Kenny can probably counter the abilities of Penn. Kenny will have a wrestling advantage, but Penn's jiu-jitsu can probably counter Florian in a battle at 155, unlike St. Pierre at 170. Most fans would point out Penn's flexibility and transition ability on the ground as a major advantage over Florian's black belt status, and I couldn't argue with that. Ultimately, we don't know how much Kenny has improved, so he's once again a real question mark coming into this fight. The possibility of an absolute war is high, but Penn has the skills to silence his doubters in this one.

Oh, I’m just curious what his strategy is – BJ has such a great top game that I’d be focusing on reversals and escapes if I were him.

Kenny has come a long way in terms of both skill and public image. I still remember when he was the poster-boy for everything that people hated about TUF.

My worry
is how comfortable Penn is with being taken down. He seems to welcome the opportunity to show off his rubber guard. Ideally, I’d like to see Penn catch one of Florian’s kicks and take him down, then GnP.

Penn is confortable with being taken down?
he’s known for NOT being taken down man..It’s not like Miguel Torres where he doesn’t care if people shoot..
It’s only in the St.Pierre fights that he constantly failed to defend them..

Perhaps I'm only concentrating on
the trainwreck fights then, but I think of him not only being on his back, but not really doing a whole lot to find a better position. In one round of the Renzo fight he seemed helpless to get away as well.
by rzor on Aug 7, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I realized as I said that
the problem has been mostly with bigger opponents. Renzo, GSP, and Hughes all had a natural size advantage that BJ had trouble with while on the ground. So with Ken-Flo, perhaps the concern is unfounded.
by rzor on Aug 7, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hughes and Renzo weren’t able to do much to BJ on the ground.

Hughes beat his face in
Granted he was gassed, but that still counts as doing something to him on the ground

that still bothers me about that fight b/c you’d think that BJ would have just been ok with going to the ground but I guess he just set on wanting to bust GSP’s face again – that’s a learning experience he’ll never forget

the reason i’m picking KenFlo is that i just don’t think BJ is taking this fight seriously. i could be wrong, but that’s my general feeling.
and as i type this, i realized BJ has brought in a ton of great fighters to mix up his training camp (which he NEEDED to do, IMO). it’s a testament to Penn’s focus on GSP that my first and lasting impression is that he’s not taking Florian seriously, regardless of whether the evidence supports that.
ironic, considering BJ’s recent thoughts on GSP and steroids, huh?

“Kenny will have a wrestling advantage " Are you sure about that ? I always felt wrestling was the weakest part of Kenny’s game.
by TLAoutlaw on Aug 7, 2009 12:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’ve read a lot of stuff regarding his improvement in wrestling. Penn just doesn’t wrestle too much because his BJJ is so good. Honestly, an advantage in wrestling against BJ isn’t that big of a deal. He oculd easily counter it. Unless you’re hulking huge at 170 like St. Pierre.

Kenny has to be better at the Boston Crab.

Well, this is all based on training camp talk. He knows he has to be improved at wrestling to pound on Penn, so the word is that he’s improved his takedowns. The problem is that Penn may want to go down to use his guard for submissions, but I doubt it. I think Kenny may have better wrestling, but it’s a slight edge at that. BJ’s takedown defense really doesn’t use his wrestling ability but more of a balance/flexibility issue.

So does this mean you believe that Kenny’s wrestling is better than BJ’s, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Kenny will be able to take BJ down with any sort of regularity (because his takedown defense is at least somewhat a product of his insane flexibility and balance)?
Personally, I think that BJ will have a slight edge in wrestling—from what I’ve seen his offensive wrestling is actually pretty good (and his takedown defense is awesome, but I believe we’re probably all in agreement there). I also believe that BJ will be able to dictate where the fight takes place (not like it really matters, because I also believe that he will have the advantage no matter where the fight occurs).
Maybe I’m wrong, but I think even a less than fully motivated BJ is too much for Ken-Flo.
by Estrada on Aug 7, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
His wrestling may be better, but I think Penn’s overall balance and flexibility will stave off takedowns. He’s shown it in the past. Actual wrestling takedowns aren’t stuffed by BJ’s sprawls for the most part. He usually backpedals, makes them work for it, and uses his insane balance to keep off the mat. It actually works better to an extent because he is making those opponents work harder.
We’ll see though. It’s somewhat of a question for Florian, but will his wrestling actually be a factor in this fight? I doubt it.

I gotta say that I think the bookies have it on this one – everyone has a chance in MMA, but I don’t see it happening.
Everyone talks about the drubbing he took in the last GSP fight, but what I realized was that after 4 rounds of strikes to the head, he may not have been fighting well, but he was still getting up at the end of the round, still moving after some GnP that would have put me in a casket. I don’t see Kenny having enough power to put BJ out.

On the surface this fight seems like a no brainer
Maybe I’m wrong about this or I have it backwards: I don’t see where Florian has an advantage in this fight. BJ has superior everything other than one part of striking which would be the kicks. Another generalization one could obviously make would be Penn’s gas tank and if he is being sincere about his new regiment.
I just see BJ being focused and hungry after getting embarassed by GSP. It would be the shock of the century for me if Florian were to win this fight any way other than a decision. But, I don’t see Florian lasting that long against Penn.

It might be my emotions
But I think BJs BJJ is over rated for MMA. He’s got crazy flexibility, but he doesn’t work for submissions that well from the bottom
My mind still says BJ as he has the edge in most areas, but since I think the edge is narrow and I questions BJs mental makeup, I think Ken Flo will pull out the upset.

You rarely get points from being on the bottom
So Penn would rather not be there.
Penn can cause separation and stand back up from the bottom as well as anyone in MMA.
He has a clear striking advantage and his top game is his most effective position.
He has his preferences, and guard is low on the list.

Wrestling...
Kenny will have a wrestling advantage
Can you elaborate?
I think Penn could take Kenny down if he wanted to, like he did with Gomi when Gomi was primarily a wrestler.
And I think Kenny has a very small chance (if any) of taking Penn down…
If anything, I think Penn has slightly above average wrestling with great takedown defense.
Florian is an average wrestler in both aspects.
