I think its that the attention should be on his fight with Kenny… not on something that doesn’t matter at all this weekend. I am sure the article didn’t start out like that, it just creeped in that direction.
- Joe Lauzon on the UG:
That was less of an apology and more of a clarification.

Exactly what I was thinking
Sounds like what he’s sorry about is the fact that he said this the week before a big fight, not the fact that he actually said it.
I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva
He said he wanted to apologize to all parties involved. Watch again.

Wanted to?
Did he actually say he was sorry to anyone? GSP Nope. :)
Every punk who doesn’t want to apologize says I’d like to apologize, but then doesn’t.
“I’m sorry I said you were on roids Georges.” Hella simple and short to watch.

If You Want Journalists to Focus on Your Fight...
…Why even mention GSP’s name let alone steroids during media availability for 101?
And how does this apology stack up with BJ being lionized lately as a man of his convictions who courageously proclaims what others are unwilling to say?
“I want to apologize to all parties involved” sounds like a proud BJ being told by a legal adviser to wise up so they don’t face a lawsuit.
All told doesn’t do much to prove he’s focused on Kenny
B.J. explained that. Iole asked him why there’s bad blood in all his fights. B.J. told him it was only two fights and why.
People want to act like B.J. called a press conference and pointed fingers. A reporter asked him a question, and Penn answered it genuinely.

BJ didn't have to a) grant the interview or b) answer the question in that manner

Surely someone who knows how public perception / the media operates would speak with more care if he did not want to offend or move the focus from Saturday night. Given his own marketing savvy, his last go ‘round with public perception in grease-gate and his refusal to work with some MMA media because of what he feels is unfavorable coverage, BJ knows what he’s up to.
No problem with answering questions genuinely – just don’t feign surprise and offer pseudo-apologies when the resulting coverage doesn’t suit you.
No idea why BJ does this stuff; he’s a legend and should crush Kenny as you predicted.

Look...
This is something BJ Penn needs to learn. The guy obviously didn’t think it would be a huge deal, and that definitely wasn’t an apology. If he doesn’t want so much flak, quit saying stupid shit and stick to what’s going on at the time… the fight with Florian.

Says who?? A guy who just lost? An inquiry was done and found nothing, so I guess BJ is just a baby.

I was being sarcastic, that would be a BJ fan’s response to what he said.

You don't have to appologize for anything you say BJ
Keep it real like you always do.

no...
Everyone jumps out their thongs as soon as BJ says anything… it’s like insulted everyone’s ex-gf everytime he speaks on GSP…
I don’t agree with everything he says, but to act like he shouldn’t speak his mind is ridiculous..
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
If he wants to speak his mind fine, go ahead, just don’t give a half-assed apology later and pretend u didn’t mean it.

Guy can say whatever he wants. But what BJ said was malicious, with no basis or proof. It was defamation of character. How would you like it if for no apparent reason somebody at your work called you a thief or a cheater? Put yourself in someone else’s shoes for once. You can be a fan of the guy, but you don’t have to worship everything he says.
I love me some Sexyama!
gps has been very patient with this whole ordeal, after the fitch fight penn got in gsp’s face and was all respectful, but come primetime he started showing his true colors, look what st peirre got for being a good sportman, he could have easily denied penn’s request and told him to go fight in his respectful weight class. there was no pressure on penn, it was st peirre belt on the line, now his livelihood is on the line, his comments arent even half painful and malicious as the things penn has said and done after 94. and the so called interviews where gsp is bashing penn, havent even got the kinda exposure some of the penn interview have. cmon man nobody here is playing favorite, im not a canadian nor a hawaiin, is it really so hard to have a rational perspective on this ?
This was not an apology. Poor BJ on his crusade against the media.

He said that he wanted to apologize to ALL parties involved. Watch again.
Then you can apologize for the things you said about BJ yesterday.

BJ wanted to apologize for getting caught making unfounded accusations. It’s not an apology for being a douchebag and trying to discredit GSP. BJ is all about BJ.
What you’re looking for is “actions” → “rec”.
Saying “me too!” or “^this” or whatever doesn’t help the conversation nearly as much as turning a comment green.
Then again, rec-ing Hardcharger is always a mistake, so maybe you should rethink the whole thing.

Wow, more armchair psychology. Not as good as what Rome contributed yesterday, but still a master-stroke. Have you discussed your new methods of pycho-telepathy with Herr Doktor Freud?
I’m so glad I have this site to tell me what people are thinking. It’s so hard having to just go by what they say.

I agree – if he says he apologizes he means it. How can anyone tell if it was meant or not?

Hey, I’m sure he is sorry he mentioned it.
Look, a lot of fighters – like a lot of us – have fighters that they think are doping or greasing or whatever. And for whatever reason, BJ must have thought it was cool to say that he thought that. And you know, being as he’s grappled half the MMA universe, he probably has some idea of everyone’s relative strengths or whatever. Hell, he may have even heard some dirt from a friend of a friend – whatever. It doesn’t matter.
But I think this apology, taken in context with the quote from yesterday is really interesting.
I say that because now I think he really didn’t mean to create this big stir. I think he was just talking and didn’t think it would go anywhere because he so explicitly said that it was just something he thought and that he didn’t have any evidence.
This puts the whole thing in a different light to me. It’s not him slagging another fighter in public as much as it is opening his damn mouth about things he shouldn’t be talking about. BJ really does have a different mentality than most people, and I hope he’s learned something from this.

Seriously? You claim that one of the best fighters on the planet is using steroids and you’re surprised that a reporter actually thought “this is a story!”
It was massively irresponsible of BJ to say it to begin with. But it’s ignorant to say that the reporter shouldn’t have turned it into a story.

yes and he went out of his way to asssociate gsp and sherk, saying his personal problems with them was b/c it was his “opinion” that they both use steroids. it’s a fact that sherk tested positive, so i don’t see how that’s an “opinion” it’s fact. he’s also been seen with sherk afterwards, all buddy, buddy like (of course after he won) so his " personal vendetta" didn’t last long. he also had a HUGE personal beef with jens, but didn’t mention him (he won that one too, surprise, surprise) , and yes he started out making his fight with kenny very personal, accusing him of tipping him off that gsp was greasing (a lie). he may not being doing this on purpose, but it almost sounded like he was accusung gsp again. pathetic.
gossip? he looks like shit too me, worse than before previous fights, bags under his eye’s, yawning during the post conference (yes i know it was boring) but it seems as though he may not be sleeping so well, worrying too much, perhaps? :-)

I totally expected
Penn to say “I apologize for saying he used steroids……but the GREASE!! That’s a different story, I believe…..”
"And Joe for Matt Hughes, dislike may not be a strong enough adjective!" - Mike Goldberg
Real Scum!!!!
you are not alone buddy, a true champion acts like a champion in a win or a loss, GSP coulda said serra beat him with a lucky punch, but he didnt, he accepted defeat, and went on to put all his doubters to shame! bj maybe a gifted athlete and fighter, but as a human being he the real scum of the earth, everyday he raises the bar for douchebags across the world.
So now GSP is a steroid using greaser? BJ is an idiot, plain and simple. Hey BJ, look up the word “slander” before you go running your mouth stating your delusions as fact. GSP beat you like the bitch dog you are and you quit in your corner. Making up erroneous, slanderous lies won’t get that win back for you. Accept defeat you douche.
That ranks right up there in the top three non apology apologies in the last year.
- Dana’s “apology” for his comments at Loretta Hunt.
- Brock’s “apology” for badmouthing Bud.
- BJ’s “apology” to all parties involved.
I love me some Sexyama!
Jesus christ can we get a little more moderation on the bj posts? This is fuckin bullshit that every post about penn turns into a bash party and it just goes on unchecked. “scum of the earth”? “raises the bar for douchebags”? Holy shit. Dont give me that "he “he brings it on himself” shit either. If its going to be a no rules site then fine but there cant be picking and choosing just because a certain writer for the site (cough…Rome…cough) leads the charge when it comes to these bash posts.
by MauiPimpin on Aug 7, 2009 3:04 AM EDT via mobile reply actions 3 recs
jesus christ can we get penn to stop acting like an idiot, making baseless allegations, non stop whining since ufc 94. the minute he stops bashing his fellow fighters, shows some respect, and accepts defeat, i guarantee you nobody will bash him anymore……he’s a legend of the sport, he should start acting like one.
I cant stand BJ personally but I agree a few children have been hanging around BE lately leaving a lot of pointless comments (see a few above for very articulate examples).

BJ Penn suffers from the same sickness that Sarah Palin has… Blame the media at all costs, regardless of what you said originally.
The interesting thing, is that what he is saying about GSP can be classified as defamation of character, and if GSP cared enough, he could bring a open/shut lawsuit against him. Especially since GSP hasn’t ever been found to use steroids. Sherk on the other hand…
Why is no one talking about why Iole asked BJ about GSP and Sherk to begin with. BJ answered Iole’s questions and he ran off and made it a bigger deal than it was.
Yes, time flies. And where did it leave you? Old too soon...smart too late. - Mike Tyson
BJ makes a slanderous comment towards his most famous former opponent. He then makes a half ass attempt at an indirect apology to avoid what could become a defamation suit. That’s what I saw and heard. No BJ bashing, no Georges hugging. And why the hell would I care about why Iole asked that question, 99% of the questions asked of MMA fighters are idiotic anyway.
