Fedor, Strikeforce Press Conference Live Updates
We'll be providing live updates from the media teleconference today via this post:
Fedor Emelianenko, Scott Coker, Ken Hershman and Vadim Finkelchtein will discuss the potentially game-changing announcement Monday that the fervently sought-after Emelianenko had signed a historic, multi-fight agreement that will see him headline mega-events co-promoted by STRIKEFORCE and M-1 Global.
Fedor will make his premium television debut during the fall when his first fight under the new agreement airs live on SHOWTIME. Up until now, all his live fights had aired exclusively on pay-per-view in the United States.
The press conference starts at 2:00 pm EST. Make sure to stay at BloodyElbow.com for what should be big news.
Hey kids, Mike Fagan here. I'll be providing updates about the press conference here. In addition, you can follow me on Twitter to fill your instant news addiction.
- Conference starting to discuss "game changing" signing of Fedor. Ken Hershman, Scott Coker, Vadim Finkelchtein, and Fedor on the call.
- Coker welcomes Fedor, greatest heavyweight of all time, to Strikeforce
- Hershman describes this signing as "epic" for Showtime.
- Vadim compliments Strikeforce, mentions TV deals in Japan, Europe.
- Fedor happy to have found great partner, fight again.
- Coker: M-1 has lots of resources internationally, good fighters.
- Fedor: I don't know my opponent yet. I will be happy with any opponent.
- Vadim: UFC did not give M-1 any chance to develop.
- Coker: Of course Dana's going to call us Strikefarce.
- M-1 lawyer confirms Zuffa's cease and desist.
- Coker: Overeem and Fedor will probably happen at some point, can't guarantee it as first fight.
- Fedor: I've fought two great fighters in my last two fights.
- Coker: PPV 6-9 months away.
- Coker: If I thought we would lose money or go out of business, we wouldn't have made the deal.
- Coker: Can't get into specifics of deal.
- Fedor: I have complete control of my career.
- Bloody Elbow's Mike Fagan gets on the call only to say, "I'm waiting for Scott." (Scott Coker is disconnected.)
- Fedor: Numbers reported on the internet were not accurate with Zuffa's offer.
- Coker: Strikeforce and M-1 are partners. We're not worried about them obtaining a promoter's license.
- Fedor: We would have signed if reported numbers were accurate.
- Vadim: Fedor's name is bigger than UFC outside America.

Bottom Line
A TV deal does nothing for long term success.. If anything EliteXC showed everyone that just because you have a TV deal does not give you automatic success. The key thing’s people haven’t been looking at is past track history with MMA.
1. TV DEAL: A TV deal should be used as a tool but never relied upon as your saving grace. If you don’t have enough capital to stand on your own in business then it’s worthless to try expansion until you’ve made enough in your market to expand on your own. Building up supply & demand.. EliteXC had GREAT ratings on their CBS card.. They’re do for the next episode of "Where Are They Now" airing on VH1 next month..You know why they could not sustain ?? Because they didn’t have enough capital on their own to stand alone.. This now leads you to bringing in investors, partners etc.. It lessens the amount of profit to be made and it cuts into your revenue streams and market share.. Bad for long term financial health.. Co-Promotion is never good for business.. Especially when so much is riding on the show financially, and split umpteen different ways from Sunday. Expansion should always be any business goal, but never done at the expenses of your market share or value.
2 BUILDING STARS: This deal with Fedor is a relatively short term deal. 1 year 3 fight contract. There isn’t enough time to really build them up with the resources SF/M1 & Dream have combined. CBS is not throwing them on the air at this point. They have zero viable marketing streams that’s needed to reach their target audience in time to do so accordingly. SF is essentially making the same play Bodog, EliteXC & Affliction did.. Banking on 1 individual’s name and appeal.. But there is really zero star value in their key player. So they would need time to "build" their key player to a market that’s honestly disinterested in seeing him. Nobody really want’s to see him at this point. Outside of the hardcores, there isn’t too many people calling for Fedor at all, which by the way that number is dwindling quickly it seems.
3. PPV: This is where EVERYONE is going to fail.. When it comes to a pay model, you have GOT TO HAVE STARS. People that pay to see their man.. Regardless of win or lose.. They will still pay to see their man.. In order to build stars, you need a few variables to all be aligned. Personality, Ability & a certain amount of success. That’s just the starting blocks too.. You also need a smart marketing alliance with someone that knows how to sell.. You’re essentially asking the general public to buy your product & the product is entertainment. That’s something that they have to pay money for but have nothing really to show for it when it’s said and done but a memory.. SO they "REALLY" have to be sold on the hype to buy.. Once you get a broad appeal, the rest will follow.. It’s like this.. Night Clubs cater to what market ??? Young women.. You know why ?? Because where ever the young women go.. then men are surely to follow.. It’s a marketing strategy based on equal parts of supply, demand & salesmanship You have to have all 3 to be successful in a pay model. SF has been semi successful because they never operated out of their comfort zone. They’ve stayed relatively small and regional. Going to Network TV & PPV is asking the entire team to be hitting home runs consistently.. They simply dont have the right batter’s to get the job done long term.. If they follow the above plan.. they’re going to fail miserably..
Their best bet is staying Showtime & hoping to ride out Fedor’s deal splitting the bill and breaking even on his 3 fights.. If you jump out of the swimming pool into an ocean full of sharks.. you’re going to get eaten very quickly…

Actually, most people are waiting to see what Coker says about their recent partnership deal with DREAM and Fedor’s next opponent. I can see Fedor vs Rogers and Shields vs Jacare in October.
The co-promotion stuff is always a joke. It’s been announced in a different form like 10 times in the history of the sport. All that ends up happening is a few fighters do a fight or two… Then they get in a fight, and don’t do business again.
It’s all about motivation of money flow. Strikeforce’s is from Showtime. M-1’s is from Fedor/Showtime. DREAM’s is from TBS. Since they don’t have the same revenue source, it is bound to fail.

Great post, but keep in mind
EXC did have really good rating. And in all reality they would be sitting where Strikeforce is right now if they had.
1. Not burned up all their startup capital, purchasing small feeder orgs. like KOTC, Sprint, Rumble on the rock etc. (Trying to expand too quickly)
2. Not invested so much marketing budget behind Kimbo. Should have used his coat-tails to spotlight Diaz,Shields,Lawler a little better than they did.
3. Kept their expenses and payrolls in line with their revenue streams.
For all the flack that EXC gets on the boards. They did put on quality shows, and did some good things for the fighters and fans.
You just have to hope that Scott Coker and co. has learned from the mistakes of EXC? My gut is that they have. But time will bear that out.

so…it’s a press conference about the one they just had?
fedor’s too little too late with courting US media…and that’s only b/c the other mma wells ran dry b/c Affliction should have stuck to selling $75 t-shirts that have been attacked by a bedazzler…..i think the elbows, wrestlers, and cage combo of the UFC made him want to fight in an organization with Brett Rogers, Yvel, and Werdum as his best challengers….what a joke. Other than Overreem, Strikeforce is all guys that wouldn’t hack it anywhere near the top of the pile in the UFC and I’m NOT BEING A UFC jockey when I say that….it’s simply fact. He beat Sylvia and Arlovski, again, guys that after brief time at the top, got dismissed from the UFC……

Does anyone think there could be an upside to having AA or Sylvia rematch Fedor on CBS? I think as far as casual fans go, there is a “tree falling in the woods” scenario. In other words do they even know they fought previously?
Not that I care to see this, especially Sylvia, but I’m thinking it is a way to gain popularity for Fedor amongst less knowledgeable fans.
I think it would be a bigger draw than Rogers, Werdum or Overeem, to get him more established.
www.knees2thehead.com
Check it out!!
I think if Arlovski gets 2 solid wins he will be back in the mix.
Timmah needs a lot of work.
The UFC will never sign Timmah and Arlovski because Fedor just crushed them. Imagine what it would do to the UFC if either of the 2 went back to the UFC and became HW champ? For this reason, I think we will eventually see them fight in Strikeforce again. I am pretty positive about Arlovski. Most people were clamoring a Fedor vs Arlovski 2 anyways, before the Grim happened. =)
Have you read where AA admitted he played Russian Roulette last night..?

I hope, but doubt, we find out how much of the Fedor signing was Coker, and how much was Showtime.
The more I think about it, the less I think this was Coker’s decision.

M-1 is saying that they can negotiate TV deals in other countries and have the ability to do so, they obviously wouldn’t get those opportunities with the UFC because UFC already has TV contracts in place.
Makes sense to me.
It goes both ways though, those are two channels…but M-1 would gain a ton of coverage on the UFC’s connections.

You think that they would turn the chance to fight the best fighter in the world? I doubt it.
Fedor has probably more appeal than Zuffa, which is not even very generous for a first contract with the UFC.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
You think that the UFC would offer more than 100 000 $ to a fighter like Rogers?
They cut Werdum because they wanted him to take a paycut, and he was not even making a lot. They are rather greedy.
Absolutely they would. Either you are being obtuse, you know nothing about business at all, or you work for M-1.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
How are paid Carwin and Velasquez? Less than that.
The UFC has always had the policy to not inflate their payroll and to pay little, except for their big stars.
Rogers is not star an Overeem not a lot more. They won’t make explose the bank to get them now.
I don’t care about M1 at all, but you, you seem very concerned with Zuffa.
You seem very concerned with M-1 and UFC co-promotion as your alter ego Russian Bomber on the UG.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I don’t care about M1 and co promotion. You are making up things.
I said that I would like to see Fedor in the UFC but I can understand that they won’t offer the same freedom for developping MMA in russia.
This is what I don’t get about the people that bitch about fighter pay.
Whenever you’re talking about UFC fighter pay, the only number that matters is what is reported to the Athletic Commission, but whenever we talk about someone else getting paid, we have to factor in all the other myriad of ways people get paid, you can’t have it both ways.
by Phildo on Aug 6, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
Werdum got cut for refusing a paycut after getting KTFO by a rookie after bitching about not gettting a title shot.
If Rogers wins his next fight against someone other than Fedor and wins, he’ll get offered at LEAST 50 to show and 50 to win. Then endorsements, which are more than salary. And if he beats Fedor? The UFC will make him rich.
The UFC is so greedy they just offered Fedor the best contract in the history of the sport and made TITO ORTIZ shut the fuck up about money. Greedy bastards.

Most people will say that meltzer’s version is as close to accurate as we’re going to get.
According to him, if the PPV is a disaster, Fedor gets 3m a fight, if it’s record numbers, it’s over 5 million per fight.
What was originally put out by Carmichael Dave was assuming teh PPV’s did very good, but it’s not like they offered him a TUF contract here.

Ken: Involved enough, they felt Fedor was important, not getting into specifics, but thrilled that they got it done. Props to strikeforce.
Loretta (to Fedor): Do you think M-1 is being portrayed accurately in terms of the negative press?
Fedor: I don’t pay attention. Knows there’s a lot of people on both sides. Says if the numbers that were published on the internet were real numbers, they would have signed with the UFC. But the numbers weren’t true. They were rumors.

"Fedor: We would have signed if reported numbers were accurate."
But I read here from various people that Meltzer reported it, and he is never wrong/fed incorrect info.
Seems like we have two conflicting reports. I will reserve judgment until I see a copy of the contract or the two sides agree on what was offered.
BOOSH
It really makes me believe he was lied to. If it were just Carmichael Dave, that would be one thing. But Meltzer is no joke and the info he gets is by far the most accurate of anybody associated with the MMA media.
"I see him beating Anderson Silva. I see him picking him apart. Him at a 131 years old...(trails off)." - Tito Ortiz on Vitor Belfort at Affliction:DOR
So you’re saying that Meltzer doesn’t back up his claims with evidence and he just take information wholesale?
Do you think he made up the 1.72m PPV buys for 101 as well?
Why do you think Meltzer is being lied to but Vadim is telling you the truth? Who has a better track record?
Unless Meltzer was in the room when the offer was laid out, how would he verify it? Probably called the usual sources, right?
Again, I am not saying I believe one side more than the other. I am saying it’s possible a normally reliable guy, despite his best efforts to verify things, got lied to/fed misinformation.
It’s also possible the UFC offer was 100% accurate and everything being reported is true, and Fedor’s folks are lying. In that case I would say “Ok, you guys were all correct to buy into it so quickly.”
I choose not to trust either side in this case. You believe who you want to, but stop reporting things as truth. 99% likely is still 100% unverified. On something as big as this story, I think 100% verification is important.
BOOSH
I would believe it more
if reporters weren’t fed misinformation all the time. Look to the Big 3 when the trade deadlines come up. You have a billion reports about possible trades and nontrades, even by usually-solid reporters, that end up wrong.
BOOSH
Carmichael Dave reported 30 millions $ guaranteed for 6 fights.
And in fact it seems that it’s 3 fights and 2-3 millions $ on average PPV rate.
30 million and 6-9 millions are about totally different.
They’re both better than SF’s offer.

Interesting stuff...
Unfortunately, the UFC is bigger than M-1 internationally, so it’s obvious that putting Fedor in the UFC probably would have been better.
You can do basic trends analysis on Russia’s leading search engine, and you’ll find that UFC keywords outweight M-1 or even Fedor. Fedor is bigger than Lesnar over there, but the UFC has much more attention over M-1 or Fedor in the country.
