Frank Mir: "If I Had to Pick a Guy to Beat Anderson Silva, I’d Pick Forrest Griffin"
Says Mir in an interview with KRKO in Seattle (at 4:55 min mark):
"The one thing that maybe could be a wrench in (Anderson's) machine and his style, is that he is so great of a counter fighter. He’s so skilled with these movements. If I could pick a guy that could beat him, it’s a guy that could rough him up. Okay, fight ugly, fight mean, come forward. Are you gonna take a shot or two?"
"Yeah, but don’t ever take the pressure off this guy. You can’t play cat and mouse with him. I don’t think anyone in MMA could sit there and play kick for kick, punch for punch, and use footwork and head work and come out on the winning end against Anderson."
"So, if I did have to pick a guy, I would pick Forrest. He has a high work ethic, [he's a] bigger guy, very aggressive, very strong and well-rounded."

We all forget how Rampage knocked Forrest down early in their fight. If Anderson catches Griffin, I think he knows how to capitalize and finish the fight.
Robert Drysdale is a good friend of franks. Also trains Forrest. Forrest also trained with Frank for the Brock fight and gave him the busted up face before the fight. Im glad Frank didnt go biased here and picked purely on skill set and not his friend…owait
"Frank Mir had a horseshoe up his ass. I told him a year ago. I pulled it out of him and I beat him over the head with it." Brock Lesnar
To be fair, he said “if I could pick a guy that could beat him” which isn’t exactly laying it out as a certainty. And Forrest’s style—pushing the pace, not super technical, etc—is what most people say could throw Anderson off his game… it never does, but Mir’s sort of echoing what’s been said before here.
Yeesh, Silva's been beaten before...
Granted, back in the stone ages where he wasn’t as experienced, but you’d think he was invincible/indestructible the way people talk about him.
More and more people are going to be severely disappointed on Saturday night.
I STILL poop rainbows.
Long as it is a fight, I will be happy. And you can generally count on Forrest making it a fight.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
This.
While hyping Forrest certainly helps sell the fight, a big part of having him face Silva is that it’s unlikely he’ll fight him the same way Thales (or Cote, for that matter) did. And if someone engages Silva, it usually makes for a damn good fight.
I'm somewhat skeptical
A part of me thinks UFC found the biggest name dumb enough to move straight into Anderson Silva’s attack to repair his damaged imaged with a KO reel highlight.
That may be, but Forrest is a growing draw (I’d argue that he’s probably a bigger draw than Anderson at the moment, though I don’t have any empirical data to back up that claim) and I’m sure they don’t want his image to be completely trashed.
That said, a big part of why Forrest is a draw is his personality and his penchant for being in entertaining fights. So if he loses to Silva in an entertaining and moderately competitive fight (even by TKO), then his standing (as a draw) probably won’t take too much of a hit (if any) while Anderson’s will be at least somewhat improved.
So while they were likely thinking that Forrest would probably fit the bill of “decent name willing to get knocked around by Silva,” they were also probably thinking that Forrest would fare better than Anderson’s previous opponents. This isn’t to say that he’ll win, just that he’ll be tougher to dispatch than Franklin or Hendo. If so, then as I said it’s quite likely that it will be an entertaining fight (something Silva’s image would benefit greatly from).
OHHH NOOOO
Why did Frank Mir have to pick Forrest? Why did I have to take pity on Uber during drunk DREAM nightcrew?
I’m fucked, aren’t I?

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva
Ha!
Considering Forrest’s lack of power this shouldn’t even be competitive. I don’t believe at all that Forrest can engage Silva for 3 rounds and not get floored.
The UFC hype machine is really in overdrive to make this fight appear more competitive.
I think Forrest has a decent shot of eking out 2 of 3 rounds. That’s another thing—Silva is used to 5-round fights so the pace may throw him off.
A wise man told me don't argue with fools
Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who
Silva isn’t used to 5 round fights- he’s fought past the third once in his UFC career. He’ll finish it in the first couple rounds like he usually does.

Except that last fight went the distance for a 5 round decision, and before that he looked to be biding time against Cote, who got injured in the 3rd.
I’m just saying that if Silva doesn’t get after it, he might find himself losing a surprise 2-1 decision.

How many rounds has Silva lost in the UFC?

Thanks to Bisping's reenactment of the Battle of Cowpens, walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
You can argue that Anderson lost that round
but I think its quite a different animal to try and say Hendo won it.
The reasons Forrest
could win this fight are the same reason he could lose this fight. Being super aggressive against an accurate counter-puncher is often a recipe for disaster, unless you just happen to be faster. I don’t think Forrest is fast enough, and his only real hope is to pin Anderson against the cage and grind him down.

But lets not get into that debate. Too much confusion on who is a Pride fighter vs UFC fighter. Not to mention almost all the big names for that era got wiped out by the younger generation and not each other.

The main problem I see for Forrest
is that Silva will have no real fear of any power from him. If Forrest starts bumrushing him it will be a very short night for him. I love Forrest as a person & he is definitely game, but this has bad news written all over it.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
I am going with Rampage on this one by saying that Forrest can’t bust a grape

People are writing off Silva and Penn and that is a mistake
I keep hearing this how Griffin is gonna be the guy to defeat Silva or how Florian is now the better mmartist than Penn. I call bs.
Penn and Silva are 2 of the best in the world and are being written off too early.
Penn only looked bad against GSP and you have to go back to Serra/GSP 1 to find a fighter who has looked good against GSP.
As for Silva I think way to many people are writing him off, sure he didnt dominate Leites or Cote like normal but it’s not like either guy was winning the fight and Thales punk @SS refused to stand with him.
All I know is I think both BJ and Anderson are gonna be determined to prove that they are some of the best fighters in the world and I’d hate to be in their way.
Hey
Gotta get excited somehow. But yeah, BJ and Silva will win and people will act like it’s not a big deal.
I STILL poop rainbows.
BJ looked good in the countdown, both athletically and PR wise.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
yeah the countdown show I think was the first time I actually heard BJ admitt he got his @ss kicked by GSP.
We all knew that already but thanks for finally joining the club BJ.
First time you heard it...
Not the first time he daid it.

Good muay thai/footwork beats good boxing any day of the week
I’ve said it before, but that along with Kennys cardio is going to be the difference in this fight.
Who in the hell is writing off Penn? I’ll bet that when the staff predictions come out every one of them will pick BJ.

Oops..
I meant Silva/Rampage. I honestly think Rampage has become too one dimentional, relying on his power, and Griffin would beat him more often than not. Thus, Griffin Silva is one of the best fights for Anderson in the LHW division.
Rampage is suffering

Griffin is more disciplined these days, stands tall, and throws straight, tight punches. Anderson usually has the height/length advantage and really eats you up when you rush in off-balance and leave holes for him to poke a fist through.
I don’t think Forrest has a great shot at beating Anderson, but I could see him having some early success. Holding a lead would be a problem as when Anderson decides to pour it on it’s usually over shortly after.
I stopped paying attention to Frank Mir's opinion after he clung to Miguel Torres Sack at WEC 40.

If he had held
on a little longer maybe he could have beat Brock.
Frank mir is also the same guy
That picked himself to beat Brock so yeah take that for what its worth.
Forrest should be all of our fan favorite but he is fighting arguably the best fighter in the ufc If not the world. I know Forrest is tough but is he tough enough to be counter punched over and over and as strong as anderson is can he shake off a Thai clinch?

Frank Mir picks have about as much credibility as Forrest’s chin, which is to say none. Yes, may be a counter fighter but so was Rashad Evans apparently and he gave Forrest easily the most brutal KO of his career. Other people have been talking Forrest’s ground game like he has an enormous advantage while forgetting Silva submitted Travis Lutter, a BJJ black who briefly had Silva mounted, and Dan Henderson, something until that fight only the Nogueira brothers had done. I feel Silva will dominate and MMA bloggers all over the net will be proclaiming Silva pound-for-pound-age again soon.

all mir is saying is that forrest is more likely to outforrest anderson then anyone else is to beat him strait up, and although i think he may have looked over lyoto, it makes sence for the most part

Kind of a pointless statistic. Kind of like weighting Rampage and Ricky Hatton when they blow up in between fights.

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva
I gotta admit I still find that Mir haters hillarious, they are still so hurt over him beating up Nog that even after Brock crushed him they are still over emotional.
Anyways Forrest is going to beat Anderson, people as always are underestimating him and his skill set they guy is going to work Andy and shock the world again.
HAHAHA
Why is it hillarious? Mir talked so much smack after he beat Nog and figured he was some sort of god. He started talking smack and had his ass handed to him. and still he said he almost had an armbar and how he thought brock would stand with him and bla bla bla.. what the hell was he worried about.. he is a submission specialist and he wasnt prepped..lol thats why i dont like mir. He talks just because he likes his own voice. asshat
Thank you for proving my point, the fact that you bought into the trash talk is the funny part me on the other hand even after Brock’s post fight antics have nothing negative to say about Lesnar because I don’t get emotional over trash talk between fighters.
To be fair
Mir’s “trash talk” before that fight got pretty personal. Hell, Mir never stopped talking trash after their first fight.
i want forrest to win but his only shot is a decision. forrest doesnt knockout anybody. he has solid bjj defense but not much bjj offense.no way he finishes anderson.
prediction: pain
nah….anderson knocks him down in the second and chokes him out
bj and kenny: kenflo in a controversial decisioin where he definitely wins round 4 and 5 and the others are close
I’ve never been a big fan of Forrest but honestly I really hope he wins.
Silva pissed me off his last two outings, so much for the ‘respect your opponent’ with him.. at least my view of his antics. So I’d love to see Forrest put a serious beating on him to remind him that it’s a fight not a dance party, enough with the calf (donkey) punches.
If you’re so far above your competition then finish them as quickly and soundly as possible and demand the UFC set you up better competition. Don’t dick around with them, all you do is piss the fans off.
