Mariusz Pudzianowski to MMA

Mariusz-pudzianowski_medium

via www.mmarocks.pl

According to mmarocks.pl Mariusz Pudzianowski 5-times World's Strongest Man signed a contract with Polish premier MMA organization KSW to make his MMA debut in December. A 32-year-old from Biala Rawska has some martial arts background. Mariusz has been training Karate Kyokushin since 11, he also took up some boxing. He has already started training in Warsaw under Polish MMA pioneer Miroslaw Okninski.

His debut fight will be probably televised by one of the Polish major networks Polsat. Opponent has not yet been named, however KSW signed Polish heavyweight boxer Marcin Najman publicly challenged Mariusz.

KSW (Martial Arts Confrontation) is one of the biggest organizations in Europe. They run two or three shows a year and they have pretty good tv deal with Polsat and Polsat Sport. So far Mamed Khalidov has been their brightest star, however MMA is not really big here, so he is not so popular.

Pudzianowski debut should garner huge media attention in Poland. Mariusz is not only a great athlete, but also a celebrity. He nearly won "Dancing with the Stars" and has appeared in multiple Polish movies and tv shows.

Mariusz Pudzianowski

There are a lot of questions for Maruisz to answer with regards to an MMA career. His power, however, is not one of them. If he hits his opponent, Mariusz may kill him.

I want to be excited about this, as a fan ofthe World’s Strongest Man competition, but I feel like very little will come from this.

I don’t think anyone is delusional enough to think he will emerge as a great fighter. But everyone (who follows MMA and WSM) has at least entertained the idea of seeing him compete in MMA. It will be exciting, regardless. And as far as “freak” fights go, he at least brings with him more validity than the average “big” fighter or person famous from an unrelated sport.

I’m definitely interested. I’m wonder how much of his muscle is the fast twitch type needed for striking? I think the more likely death my Mariusz scenario is him locking in an RNC for a little too long.

I’ll probably try to follow this… but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gasses out from hulking around that frame.

He’ll be wheezing on the way to the ring.

Have you seen him compete before?

by Simco on Aug 5, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

By WSM standards, he's a very small man.

And reasonably nimble. This isn’t like Joe Onosai or Flemming Rasmussen moving to MMA.

Given his overall strength, I think he’d be quite good if he learned some decent wrestling.

Where's Magnus Vermagnusson?

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

I have a Power lifting background

And know people who know Marius. He is a good guy and actually an incredible overall athlete. That being said, He is almost positively on juice and will probably have to get off and lose some weight to be serious about competing. I am going to keep a close eye on this….extremely curious. The potential here is ubelievable. The power he possesses with or without steriods is very real and very scary.

by Nick Travaglini on Aug 5, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

His Wikipedia page lists his weight at 285lbs. If he gets off gear and stops eating like a horse, he will be able to drop down. All that muscle mass is going to be easy to drop without eating about a million calories per day. I’m exaggerating, but you know how it is.

But that’s why I made the comment that I think very little will come from this. Mariusz fighting in Poland means about nothing to you, me, and the majority of MMA fans. Considering his use of steroids, it’s unlikely he’ll be too eager to head over to the US to compete with the best MMA has to offer. Maybe he will, but he probably won’t have to. I’m sure there’s money to be made in Poland, where drug testing is presumably not an issue, fighting the Polish boxer and other freak show type matches.

Is it certain he used steroids ?
Anyway it’s still interesting , he’s unbelievably strong . I wonder how much time it takes for a man this strong to become a good wrestler?

He was suspended from WSM for a year...

…after a positive test of some sort in 2004. Don’t think they ever said what the test was positive for, but I’m guessing it wasn’t ice cream.

Is he going to pull his posse to the ring in a car?

There's potential

but i’m guessing that his wrestling/ ground game is non existent, or at the least- very nascent.

But at 6’1, 265, he’ll most certainly be physically imposing.

Crossover appeal to the Polish/Strongman audience

Cage Potato’s post on this is pretty funny—excerpt:

He has this unintentionally hilarious story to explain how he got his start in strength training at age 13:

“I met a kid, he was 12 years old. I could not lift him, then he tried to, and he lifted me up 6 inches in the air. He was strong. This motivated me to work out and become the world’s strongest man.”

Awesome. Now who’s ready to see Brock Lesnar get carried around the cage like a giant stone ball before being carefully placed atop a pillar?

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

this guy can do well in a polish organization.
