Roger Mayweather Arrested - Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez in Jeopardy?

Roger Mayweather

Scott over at BadLeftHook posted early this morning that Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather was arrested and charged with coercian with force and battery strangulation in Las Vegas.  He goes on to explain how this could lead to a delay in the fight:

From a boxing standpoint (since I don't know much about the law other than how to not break it and that things like murder are wrong), what really worries me is Floyd Jr. could surely use this distraction as an excuse to bail again. Mayweather-Marquez was called off the first time officially due to a rib injury to Floyd, and a lot of the other rumor was that it just wasn't selling tickets and the buzz wasn't there. I don't think the buzz is there this time, either. Let's face it: This is a big fight in boxing, but not beyond that. Now matched against UFC 103, PPV numbers would take a hit.

And it's all about how many sales you can bring up at the negotiating table if Mayweather-Pacquiao ever really gets discussed.

Of course, Floyd has his father there as a very capable fill-in if Roger winds up in a lot of trouble, and I don't think Floyd is learning a whole lot in camps these days anyway. He could probably train himself and let me talk to him in the corner and be fine.

It's obviously too early to know if the fight will be postponed but the possibility is out there.  Knowing Floyd and his ego I could very easilly see him using this as an excuse to get out of having his PPV go head to head againt UFC 103.  There was a lot of talk that much of the UFC's strong push to get Fedor on the roster was to have a Lesnar/Fedor fight to demolish Mayweather/Marquez in terms of PPV buys.

Now we're looking at Vitor Belfort vs. Rich Franklin as the headlining fight which is an okay draw but it's a good enough fight and the UFC is hot enough right now that it's still likely to beat Mayweather in a head-to-head.  They already found a way to postpone the fight once already and managed to get the fight scheduled for Mexican Independence Day which should have done extra buys as the Mexican crowd tunes in at parties..etc.  It has become more and more clear that Floyd/Marquez won't win the buyrate battle and rather than having to face facts I'm willing to bet that he pushes the fight back and talks a lot about how they would have outdrawn the UFC if it had gone off as planned.

I hope

That whatever date they reschedule it for (if they are forced to postpone) that DW is able to put something up against it, even if its a past PPV for free on Spike. Floyd can suck it for all I care.

I personally hope that they don’t put anything new against it so that I can watch it live. I love boxing and Floyd’s return IS a big deal…so personally I hope they don’t counter it. We’ll see though

Fair enough

I don’t share the same sentiments for boxing (especially where Floyd is concerned) but I can respect your feelings for it. Having said that, I am still hoping for counter programming.

Watch. Floyd will put it up against the UAE card (if it happens) and play the patriot card.

Good. I want to watch this fight on a night with no MMA on at the same time.

Mayweather-Marquez over 103

I’m more excited for Mayweather-Marquez given the clash of styles, personalities and the loaded undercard.

Other than Swick-Kampmann and Belfort-Franklin, I’m having a hard time getting amped for kos-trigg or any other filler on that card. The event DVD will always be there if anything great happens.

Keep in mind that this is all conjecture at this point. I haven’t been following the case, but Roger could be out on bail with any trial happening after the fight. There haven’t been any statements made yet, so i’m hopeful.

It is a really nice undercard for once on a boxing PPV. Mayweather/Marquez suffers a little in my eyes since Floyd all but admitted that he picked Marquez because he is too small. Still, it’s important and I want to see it.

103 is a really weird card on paper and I’m having trouble coming to terms with how I feel about it.

"Over the course of a year, we might do three big boxing matches, tops," Hand said. "UFC is running every month. And a year in advance, I know the date and site of those shows. If you own a sports bar and you can buy a UFC event for $1,000, and you know you’re going to pack the place, why would you buy the Floyd Mayweather fight (Sept. 19 head-to-head v. UFC 103) for $2,200 and not do as well?"
"People ask, ‘Do you think UFC will kill boxing?’ " Hand said. "It already has. Boxing’s dead. "Look, the next [Floyd] Mayweather fight is the same night as UFC 103. Does that make any sense?"

Boxing has actually adjusted appropriately. They stopped putting every fight of any importance on PPV and limit it only to fights that will actually draw (for the most part). Dead sports don’t put up Pac/Hatton numbers

Boxing stopped putting on more PPV’s because they don’t have anybody who can sell one. HBO is trying to build up the next generation of PPV stars, but for the most part nobody is sticking.

And having 1 or 2 major PPV events a year doesn’t mean the sport isn’t hurting. Outside of those 1 or 2 events, boxing is on life support in the US.

Boxing promoters are working much better with each other out of necessity. If they don’t, they will be in even worse shape. And without a singular goal (like the UFC is with MMA), they will continue to struggle.

Boxing stopped putting on more PPV’s because they don’t have anybody who can sell one.

This is half true, and should be 100% true. But it never stopped them in the past. It took the Calzaghe-Jones and Pavlik-Hopkins disasters and a horrible economy to change HBO’s thinking about a lot of fights.

HBO is trying to build up the next generation of PPV stars, but for the most part nobody is sticking.

Do you want guys to become superstars in eight months? HBO’s “let’s build the future” push started this year. Way too early to say nobody is sticking.

NBA vs. NFL

Agree. Boxing is far dead. Imagine if NFL and NBA fans talked this much smack to each other. I don’t understand why 90% of MMA fans hate on boxing so much. MMA isn’t going anywhere and neither is boxing they are both here to stay

Bad example. You can’t do a lay-up in football. You can’t tackle in basketball.

You can box in MMA. Hence the comparison and why there is a more of us vs. them mentality.

I’ve always wondered about this, so is that how much bars pay to show a UFC PPV, $1,000? I knew they paid more than just someone buying at home I just wasn’t sure how much.

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

Depends on the location...

it scales based on population..etc. They can charge a bar in Vegas a lot more to show it than a bar in the middle of Michigan.

I believe that it also depends on the bar’s capacity (but I don’t remember where or when I read that, so it could all be a figment of my imagination).

by Estrada on Aug 5, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

that is true as well. A bar in the middle of Indiana that can hold 75 people at max capacity isn’t going to have to pay the same price as a mega bar that holds 2,000 in Vegas.

Cool I didn’t realize there was that many things factored into it. So say an average size Buffalo Wild Wings that holds a couple hundred people in a town like St. Louis or something, how much would they pay roughly?

Think about this….

If Floyd Mayweather, with HBO behind him can’t compete with the UFC…. What makes anybody think Strikeforce can with Showtime?

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 5, 2009 11:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Look at his last 2 fights

Floyd’s fight with Oscar = 2.1 million buys.
Fight with Hatton = 850,000 (reportedly
source: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3158134)

I think that’s some good competition right there.

Floyd & Hatton are draws. Not him.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 5, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you mean Oscar. But at the bar I watched the fights at and from the opinions of other people, people were cheering for Mayweather, who at the time was like because of his 24/7 performances.

by cyke on Aug 5, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mayweather was a huge part of the draw for the Hatton fight. People that insist Hatton is this huge draw ignore the fact that Ricky Hatton’s first PPV fight in the U.S. was with Floyd Mayweather, who was red-hot coming off the Oscar fight. Mayweather became a huge star thanks to 24/7, Dancing with the Stars, etc. No one had ever REALLY seen his personality before. He did a phenomenal job marketing himself.

Mayweather now has been out of the spotlight for two years, and two big fights don’t make the public yearn for more, especially when boxing is such a stop-stop-stop-stop-and-GO ONE TIME! sport in the mainstream. Mayweather needed to keep fighting. Instead he made the idiotic decision to fake retire and lost all his momentum.

Still, discounting what Mayweather did to make those two fights what they were is foolish.

He’s a fool and is obviously a dangerous person. Get him the hell outta the ring…. and I bet Pretty Boy Floyd will follow.
