damn, i didn’t realize how much bigger silva is..

What about Brock

Just think now how big Brock is, compared to the little guys, especially those in the WEC.

by TCR on Aug 4, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah well everyone knows brock to be big..

but BJ fights at different weightclasses before, and silva is a thin MW fighter.. BJ dropping back to 155 and Silva going up to 205 really accentuates how much bigger Silva is..

BJ

fought Manchida at 190. Think about him fighting Anderson. It could happen.

Where by 190, I think he actually weighed in at 187. Fully dressed. :-)

Anderson Silva’s english isn’t that bad. He should try speaking it more often.

by thesource on Aug 4, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

I heard him say once that he's embarrassed by his accent...

go figure, when he speaks english, I actually think he has the best accent from all Brazilian fighters.

by Orcus on Aug 4, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I bet he will give his post fight interview in English at 101.

by DirtyML on Aug 4, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

to be honest

i don’t think his accent is bad… it’s his voice that drives me crazy… lol

The Mike Tyson voice?

as much as he has a high pitched voice

it doesn’t really sound feminine in portuguese.

by Orcus on Aug 4, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

i think you're right

it doesn’t sound feminine to me really at all, just really really annoying… high enough to make me want to never hear him whisper sweet nothings in my ear, lol.

hate to say it...

but im thinkin those two are goin home with W’s saturday night.

Im weary though… I took the 3 favorites in the main events of 100 and they all won, im not sure if we’ll have 5 straight (more if you go back to Franklin at 99, Machida at 98 etc.) main event favorites win.

I think a bunch of people are underestimating Penn going into this fight. I’m not sure but I get the feeling that Florini is in for a whole lot of pain come Saturday.

i think your way off

GSP doesn’t have better wrestling then Hendo. Doesn’t really have one shot knockout power. But andersons Thai clinch would put GSP to sleep. Your talking a guy who says he wants to put on weight to fight at 185 vs a guy that comfortably fights at 205. Anderson is just too big for him.

"What do you want from me?..... A Slap?"

by xtremecouture on Aug 4, 2009 4:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

“GSP doesn’t have better wrestling then Hendo.”

Debatable. He might not be better at pure wrestling, his adaptation of wrestling for mixed martial arts is superior given that Hendo rarely uses his wrestling offensively, whereas that has become a mainstay of GSPs attack.

by DirtyML on Aug 4, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with DirtyML

GSP has great freestyle wrestling.. He adapt’s it really well into his fighting style.. It’s mainly his speed that give him the advantage. He has a very fast shot.. He catches guys off balance in transitions on the feet.. He changes levels really fast and pushes through on his shot’s..

Hendo is Greco Roman and he uses his wrestling a lot too, but more so like Randy for control and clinch.. Who is the better wrestler is debatable because GSP wasn’t into wrestling and goes off natural ability where as Hendo was an olympic wrestler of his own.

I’d say GSP is more fluent in open freestyle wrestling & you see it a lot more in his fights..

by MMAuthority on Aug 4, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I think GSP is better too. His ability to adapt in the middle of a shot by switching to a knee tap is incredible. I don’t see anyone else doing that kind of stuff right now.

A. Silva a bad fight for GSP

While I agree GSP is on a tear right now. A. Silva is just too big and good at striking and nullifying people’s top game with his long frame. Even if GSP get’s the take down on Silva, how do you expect him to do anything with it the minute it hits the ground he’s wrapped in a body triangle ???

Not to mention Silva is used to fighting much bigger and heavier guys. So GSP maxed out wouldn’t come close to what guys like Franklin & Hindo walk in at fight time.. Those are 2 big guys as well and Silva makes them both look small.. Here’s an easy comparison in this video.. BJ & GSP are not far from different in size.. GSP is about an inch taller and slightly wider than BJ.. Look at how small BJ looks next to Silva ??

Just a bad matchup for GSP.. Not to take anything away from him either.. GSP is great, but sometimes it’s best to leave it alone.. Silva is too strong and too big for someone like GSP to be worried about fighting.. If you watch Silva’s training video’s you’ll see him throwing around Big Nog, Lil Nog, Rafeo etc,.. these are all ’big" strong guys..

by MMAuthority on Aug 4, 2009 4:43 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I dunno

Silva will def have the reach but look at Thiago Alves! GSP dominated him everywhere and I know for a fact he has more muscle on him than Anderson. Sivla no doubt is taller with a longer reach but I belive GSP might be able to nullify him on the ground and stop him or get a decision at the least.

by MMANut25 on Aug 4, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Size doesnt equal strength

Thiago is definitely more defined and ripped than Anderson, but that doesn’t mean he is stronger. Anderson has long elated muscles.. That doesn’t mean he doesnt have more or less strength. Thiago’s muscles are shorter and more compact.

Water retention plays a huge role is muscle fullness too.. I would bet money that Silva’s core strength is phenomenal… He was vastly underestimated by many big strong guys as to how strong he really was.. Rich was the perfect example.. Rich was bullying guys in the clinch and using his strength to beat on guys in the clinch.. Silva basically man handled him in both fights and Rich has said in numerous interviews that he was very strong.. Big Nog has mentioned that Silva is stronger than him..

by MMAuthority on Aug 4, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP also had a massive reach advantage.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

Florian is in for an old school beatdown theres no 2 ways about it! Im gonna be there live, and i took Forrest at +270 but i have a bad feeling about that fight. Im a HUGE Forrest fan but i don’t like how they match up on the feet. I think Forrest will be able to muscle him down, im just scared he might get overwhelmed on the feet by Silvas lazer guided strikes.

by MMANut25 on Aug 4, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

i picked silva

but you can take comfort in the fact that i’m 0-3 for picks in griffins last three fights

Maybe if BJ meets enough good fights before his fight he won’t actually have to do any training.

bj penn’s new goal in life is to appear in as many lame 50 sec clips, with as many mma fighters(ufc and non ufc alike) as possible. what happens if he loses to kenflo ? loooong road back to the top, and no more legacy talk. nice!!!!

by realblood33 on Aug 4, 2009 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

Ahhh...the what if's

Legacy already secured.

And KenFlo is no threat.

by MickDawg on Aug 5, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Because GSP knows Silva would just tool on him…GSP often wins by throwing his takedowns straight into submissions..There’s no way he could take anderson down. And Yeah go on youtube and you can find seven second long videos of bj….waste of time and space… I have KenFlo winning by TKO in the Second Round at UFC 101

Bj

blogs about his fight prep and behind the scene time for his fans because his fans want to see it. Bj is and always has been very generous to his fans.

Your post is the waste of time and space. Oh, and there is no way Kenny wins. Bj takes this fight any way he wants to.

Man standing on toilet is high on pot.

by babar1 on Aug 4, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

bj blogs because he likes to be a part of mainstream media, he’s got beef with many mma analysts and journalists, also by having a man servant follow him, who wont question him, gives him more room to act like an ass. its not very original either, dana white and many other fighters have been doing it for a while, also, it doesnt mean that the fighters who dont vlog dont care for their fans.

by realblood33 on Aug 4, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

let me guess

you just started watching mma about a year ago?

you’re way off base. BJ’s been vloging way longer than dana and just about any other fighter out there. His web site has been around for years providing lessons, techniques, fights, and behind the scenes looks to his fans for free. He has always ran the site for his fans and his site is where he posts (along with you tube) all these videos you’ve been seeing reciently.

your other comments are just silly

Hahaha...

Sorry, you’re way off. BJ Penn was first.

At least post facts when you start hating on everything Penn.

by MickDawg on Aug 5, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm picking Kenny..

It sounds crazy, but I really think good footwork/muay thai beats good boxing 9/10 times.

by Razzel on Aug 4, 2009 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Yes but the difference is.....

BJ Penn beats Kenny Florian 10/10 times.

Everybody BJ fights at lightweight is definitely “going to be the guy that beats him” and it never happens (notice I said LW) yet I always have to hear about how “Penn is going down” all the way up to the point that Penn gets his hand raised.

by MauiPimpin on Aug 4, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

If all things were equal....BUT

BJ Penn’s boxing is great for MMA.

KenFlo’s is just “good”….and lacks power.

by MickDawg on Aug 5, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ve heard BJ is training the nervous system.

by crinow on Aug 4, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

WOW theres alot of BJ hate on this site these days. I just cant wait until he destroys Florian only for the haters to say “he didnt deserve the title shot”. BJ by whatever he’s in the mood to win with!

by MMANut25 on Aug 5, 2009 2:58 AM EDT reply actions

I’d also like to add getting a title shot def blew KenFlos standing in the rankings way out of proportion. No doubt the guy has made tremendous improvement since his time on TUF, but what elite lw’s has he beat? The only elite lw he ever fought (Sherk) he lost to.

Sherk,Aoki,Alvarez should all be ranked ahead of him IMO. The highest ranked fighter Kenny defeated was Stevenson (BE #17). Alvarez has wins over #5 Hansen and #7 Kawajiri. Aoki has a win over #5 Hansen and beat #4 Alvarez. Hansen is coming off a win over #3 Aoki that won him the Dream GP. Sherk obviously defeated Kenny aswell as beating #14 Griffin who is ranked higher than anyone Kenny has ever beat..

Kenny has a great streak going which includes quality wins but, an imminent title shot has definitley warped even the most respected journalist and bloggers opinions as evidenced by the SBN/USA TODAY rankings.
