Jake Shields to Fight for Interim Strikeforce Middleweight Belt in October

Jake-rotr-belt_mediumPromoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

Strikeforce President, Scott Coker talked to Five Ounces of Pain about it:

"With Cung, he has a couple of obligations. He has fight obligations for us, and then he has obligations for some movie deals that he has signed on to.

What we will do for Cung is, in October, we’re going to let somebody fight for the interim belt... We’re going to offer it to Jake [Shields], and give Jake a chance at the interim belt. Then we’ll try to put Cung together with the winner of that before the end of the year."

Cung Le last fought way back at March 2008, where he beat Frank Shamrock to take the Middleweight Championship. He's been out doing movies, and has yet to defend his title.

Jake Shields last fought at a catchweight bout and submitted the #7 Middleweight Robbie Lawler in the first round. He is currently number 5 in the USAT/SBN Consensus Welterweight Rankings, yet Scott Coker decides to offer him a middleweight title bout.

Cung is out. Nick Diaz will probably make a run at the welterweight division. Frank Shamrock, Robbie Lawler, Benji Radech and Scott Smith are all coming off loses.. So the question is, who does Jake Shields fight against?

Please say Jorge Santiago.

This is pathetic. Get the title off of Cung Le already. He obviously doesn’t want to fight.

And Jake Shields needs to be fighting at his natural weight class.

QFT, they seriously couldn’t find anyone at 185?

Which begs the question: who in Strikeforce will he fight for the interim title?

Which seems to be Strikeforce’s way of doing business. Lose a fight, get a title shot.

And somehow people justify it. It’s comical.

Unless you are jumping up in weight like BJ Penn did against GSP, there is no reason to be in a title fight after you just lost.

I’d like to see how Jake performs against strong competition, but it wouldn’t be wise to throw him out there against guys like GSP or alves right away..

A fight against Paulo Thiago would answer a lot of questions and it would be a good gauge on how good both fighters really are..

If jake wins, he solidifies his spot at the top 5, gets even more hype thrown at him, and could very well get a title shot after..(or maybe after 1 more fight)..

If thiago wins, the UFC gets another solid contender. Hanging with Fitch, and big wins over both kos and jake would put him right at the top 5 i think..

Stylistically it would be great IMO.. Jake’s strength on the ground has been hyped up a lot, but we know Thiago is veryyy dangerous there as well.. Jake needs to show that he has improved on his striking, and Paulo needs to prove that his KO over kos isn’t lucky..

I don’t know about the other fans, but i’d love to see that fight..

I don’t have any names for you, as this conversation was mostly forgettable. I find it annoying that some people have these convenient criticisms. I don’t have a problem with either scenario (or Diaz somehow getting a title shot at WW, even though it makes more sense for these guys to be competing in one another’s place), but the outrage over Vitor fighting at 195 pounds was pretty silly.

nick can't make 155... he'd even try to kill himself making 160..

so i think 170 is actually his optimum weight now that he’s growing into his frame more..

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 4, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

Nick seems most comfortable at or near MW, based on his last two spectacular performances. Many people have commented that he seems more active when he doesn’t have to make the cut and can carry his natural body mass. I tend to agree.

by Blackout612 on Aug 4, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yup, youre right.

but i think 170 wouldn’t be hard for him to cut.. that way, he’s the biggest guy in the division but (if i’m right that 170 will be a relatively easy cut) he would still perform like he did on his last two fights.

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 4, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s fought at 170 for most of his career, but a lot of people are suggesting that it was because he was very young and his rangy body was too frail to take fights at 185. He’s filled out a bit and I’d like him to stay up at 185 from here on forward, personally.

Also, Hendo is too damn hot to risk his contendership after the Declaration of Hendopendance. He’s already earned the shot in my mind. No use punishing him because Anderson is off playing in the 205 sandbox.

So instead of getting Jake and Nick any competition at WW, they’re going to make Jake a MW, and let Nick have the WW belt?

Couldn’t they… I dunno, sign some middleweights? Or even some welterweights for that matter? How many fighters do they have on payroll, 7?

WAIT I just realized: with their new partnership with M-1 Global, they’ll have plenty of new blood, as M-1 will be providing 50% of the fighters on a given card.

It is all about SF having 2 very popular fighters, bad boy Nick Diaz and the super hot family man, Jake Shields. They won’t fight each other, but SF can have them both wearing belts if Diaz takes 170 and Shields goes to 185.

And of course, I can almost guarantee that the Gracie camp was all for this, giving them 2 belts (if everything goes according to plan).
