Carwin reveals Velasquez/Rothwell to fight for title next

UFC heavyweight number one contender, Shane Carwin revealed that he has been told that the winner of the Cain Velasquez vs. Ben Rothwell fight at UFC 104 will fight for the title next.

When asked about the possibility of facing either Randy Couture or Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira somewhere down the line should he capture the title against Brock Lesnar, Carwin revealed:

“I was told that the winner of the Brock fight will likely face the winner of the Cain and Rothwell fight at UFC 104.”

As fans will remember who have followed the situation over the past couple of weeks, Carwin was originally set to face Velasquez on the UFC 104 card in October. When Lesnar decided he wanted to fight again this year, Carwin was moved to UFC 106 to oppose the champion and Affliction import, Rothwell, was brought in to fill the void.

In reality, yeah, the winner of Velasquez v. Rothwell probably will get the next title shot. I mean, Velasquez is a contender and, short of having a heart attack in the ring he will beat Ben Rothwell. So yeah, I can see that happening.

However, making up some phoney baloney quote, attributing it to Shane Carwin (as if the UFC would explain their future booking plans to him when they don’t necessarily involve him), then publishing it as fact is CAH-LASSIC MMABay.

Todd Duffee, at this point, is a more realistic challenger than Ben Rothwell.

Not that I think Rothwell will get a title chance, but I’m curious why you would say that?

Rothwell has a 30-6 record, and his only loss in the last four years came to Arlovski (after a horrible stand up by a noob ref).

Rothwells record is padded. Not to disparage the man, but his record is full of fluff, fighting in the IFL with third teir HW and, at times, fighting LHWs that fought at HW for the sake of the team. Duffee is a prospect with a win in the UFC, Rothwell has been exposed as kind of a fat guy who beats up (fat) little kids (if you have never seen that, I suggest you google it). Being 5-0, Duffee is some what of an unknown quantity, certainly not deserving a title shot, but he has yet to lose. Ignoring his can crushing, Rothwell is coming off a loss.

Rothwell is coming off a win (vs Chris Guillen — I know I know, who?).

I see you’re point, but Rothwell is a veteran and, as the dj points out below, if he manages to beat HW contender Cain, then I wouldn’t have a problem with him getting a title shot.

Not that I believe he will beat Cain or he will get a title shot if he does, tho.

I believe that fight your refering to was actually Rothwell’s pro debut and the standard of what is considered a pro fight in Iowa may shock you.

by Rabbit915 on Aug 31, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Sigh.

Rothwell versus the fat kid was Rothwell’s first fight. Blame the promoter who booked the fight, not Rothwell.

by Steve4192 on Aug 31, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Because at this point, Ben Rothwell is a fat guy of whom no one has ever heard, and Todd Duffee just had the fastest* knockout in UFC history on a PPV featuring no shortage of Heavyweight contenders past, present, and (with Duffee and maybe-but-probably-not Russow) future.

Most people know Ben Rothwell from getting clobbered by Andrei Arlovski at the first Affliction PPV. Of course, nowadays most people know of Arlovski as being the guy who feeds his chin to haymakers. It’s MMA math, sure, but there’s a series of events to suggest that maybe Ben Rothwell isn’t, say, the next Brock Lesnar.

I agree. I think the UFC should have kept Cain/Carwin and now they would have Nog to fight Brock for now

if velasquez wins on the heels of the kongo win...

then it would be fair to give him a title shot. so why wouldn’t it be fair to give the shot to rothwell if he beats the guy who could be next in line?

by thejd on Aug 31, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

It would be logical, but this is sort of one of those fights where Cain win and he gets a title shot, Rothwell wins and… he doesn’t. You have to be someone inorder to get a title shot one or two fights into the UFC. Rothwell, although I know who he is, is no one. He was at one point, ranked in the top ten by some rankers (inside MMA for one), so go figure that one out.

by szucconi on Aug 31, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair’s got nothing to do with it. The UFC likes to make money. This cannot be done with Ben Rothwell as a headliner.

Actually, that’s not true. Brock Lesnar will draw with just about anyone, Rothwell included. But you’re leaving a lot of money on the table putting Rothwell in their over a lot of other Heavyweights under the UFC’s employ.

Which is why he should fight Kimbo, whether Kimbo wins or loses TUF. It will make a ton of money, right?

My take is if Cain wins then he gets the next shot but if Rothwell wins then Nog gets the next shot with Rothwell fighting Lesnar if Lesnar loses bc If Rothwell beats Cain and Lesnar then he will deserve the shot and if Lesnar beats Rothwell then he can get his rematch but if Lesnar beats Carwin i see Rothwell fighting the Dos Santos/Cro Cop winner for a title shot. But this is just my opinion

by SouthAlaBamaRampage on Aug 31, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

I’d like to buy a comma, Pat. :)

But seriously, hard to follow the line in there.
Cain > Rothwell = Cain for title
Rothwell > Cain means winner of Rothwell vs Nog = title shot.

Am I close?

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

by mythbuster on Aug 31, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

My bad..

Cain > Rothwell = Cain for title shot regardless of Lesnar/Carwin outcome.

Rothwell > Cain = If Lesnar loses then Lesnar vs. Rothwell with the winner getting a title shot bc it is

a win, win situation with either a guy that just beat Cain and Lesnar, or Lesnar gets his rematch.

Nog would then fight Carwin for the title.

Rothwell > Cain = If Lesnar wins then Rothwell will fight the Dos Santos/Cro Cop winner for the next title shot while Lesnar will fight Nog.

This is my guess on how it will go.

This had better be rubbish. Cain has potential and Rothwell is a proven solid HW, but title shot? Cmon now.

by GeeDub on Aug 31, 2009 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

I think all these scenario's will be moot

I see Cain running over Rothwell. After looking at Rothwell’s history, I don’t see one really impressive win. And admittidly i’m the guy who at first said that Rothwell’s style might be an advantage in this fight.

by GoldenOldie on Aug 31, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

If Cain murderizes Rothwell in an extended beating, I could definitely see him getting the next title shot after Carwin. No way in hell is Rothwell getting a direct title shot no matter how he beats Cain.

Plus, I guarantee you that Nog gets the next title shot, maybe if Crocop beats JDS then they fight for a title shot, but they’re gonna give Nog a title shot before Dos Santos

i’d like to see randy vs cro cop whether he wins or loses against dos santos

meh

if Mirko beats Dos Santos, then they need to give him a title shot ASAP. All things said and done, this might be the last title run that he has left in him, and honestly I’d like to see Nog/ Mir 2 for the next title shot, and i’d also like to see Cain develop a bit more before they give him a title shot.

Depending on who wins their fight more impressively (CC/ JDS, or Cain/ Big Ben), the winner could be the next in line for Brock
