ADCC 2009 Participants Filled With MMA Stars (Update)

18915-20097271815200The ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) tournament comes every two years and it is where all the best grapplers in the world compete. This year's ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships will be held in Barcelona, Spain on September 25 - 27.

The full list of participants have been released and the event will again be joined by several of today's top MMA fighters.

Aside from the 2007 Champions that are trying to repeat, like Kyra Gracie, Penny Thomas, Sakaya ShiodaMarcelo GarciaRani Yahya, Alexandre Ribeiro, Fabricio Werdum, and Demian Maia, there will also be a "Super-Fight" between the last two Absolute Champions, Robert Drysdale and Roger Gracie

Here are a few of the more notable MMA fighters joining this year:

Perhaps the biggest MMA star to be competing at the event, is Georges St. Pierre. The UFC Welterweight Champion, who has also considered trying-out for the Canadian Olympic wrestling team, will try to conquer the grappling world much like he did in MMA. Another UFC fighter who will also compete in the same division is Japanese star, Yoshiyuki Yoshida.

Demian Maia might be able to take revenge on his UFC 102 opponent, Nate Marquardt, as they will both be competing in the same weight class, along side Rousimar Palhares, Andre Galvao and Kazuhiro Nakamura.

Female MMA Stars, Megumi Fuji, and Christiane Cyborg will compete at their respective divisions.

the 2007 champion, Rani Yahya, will try to repeat as he competes in the same division of fellow WEC fighter, Jeff Curran.

MMA Veterans Ricardo Arona, Renato 'Babalu' Sobral, Dean Lister and Vinicius Magalhães will compete at the -98.9kg.

Former UFC Heavyweights Fabricio Werdum and Jeff Monson, will also compete in the +99kg division.

*UPDATE from Michael Rome:

Shari Spencer said a week ago that GSP will NOT be competing in this.

*UPDATE 2 from sherdog - Demian Maia won't be competing anymore:

Now, I’m just planning a 10-day vacation, because I trained so hard for this fight, so I think it will be too close to compete at ADCC. I’m going to be in Europe for a series of seminars by that time, and I probably will go there to see the event. But I’m not going to compete because my priority is the UFC, and I must be 100 percent if I want to fight at the end of the year.

*UPDATE 3 from Josh Gross via cagepotato - Marquardt is out too:

"Josh Gross twitter - Just finished an interview with Nate Marquart for my podcast. He says he might not be in ADCC either."

"As of now, Maia, St. Pierre, and Marquardt are still listed on adccbarcelona.com, which seems like blatant false advertising."

Great event !

Thanks for the report. I’m definitely looking forward to this event. It usually generates enough video material to keep me entertained for months.

Roger by submission (choke from the mount!).

Nogi, so gotta go for another sub.

Roger will find a way to collar choke him from the mount even without the gi, that or he may be screwed.

Roger has an insane armbar from the guard and a great RNC. Have you watched him?

by judonerd on Aug 31, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Watching Roger at the world championships earlier this year was insane, cross choke from mount on every single person. And yes, Roger also has an extremely good nogi game, 2005 should have taught everyone that.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

Yeah, I was just referencing the absolutely ridiculous run he had at Worlds of just sweep → mount → x-choking everyone. I realize the man is probly one of if not the best grappler in that weight category.

How is Monson getting out of the country, I thought he had to surrender his passport?

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

“Yes it’s possible,” Maia said. “I’m the champion and I [was] invited to be there. I’m just waiting after this fight to see what’s going to happen and talk to the UFC guys and decide if I go or not.”

-FH

Sounds like the list is those invited, not those who have agreed to be there.

by Graven Image on Aug 31, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

i think it's official..

the participants also have been posted in the ADCC Barcelona website.. I think Maia’s issue is just getting cleared to compete after the UFC 102 fight.

only 14. Marcio Cruz, Brazil and 15. Roberto Abreu, USA is on the Japan MMA website, but not on the ADCC Barcelona list..

but they may be a few more announcements later on in the week so i’ll just keep you guys posted. :)

Does that even matter?

by Meshuggeth on Aug 31, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

i think the list is still incomplete though.. needs to be 16 per division..

Does anyone know for sure if GSP is still competing after his recent injury? That roster may be outdated.

by MMAEruption on Aug 31, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that seems unlikely.

Which is a shame. Given that he has no grappling background, I’d love to see him compete in a pure grappling tournament.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

GSP got schooled in the 2005 ADCC by a flying armbar. There’s video of it floating about.

Damn it’s too bad BJ Penn isn’t in ADCC this year.

by MMAEruption on Aug 31, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

UFC contracts?

Always thought the UFC didn’t allow their fighers to compete in other promotions/events? Wasn’t one of their initial gripes with Fedor against him wanting to compete in Sambo? Maybe ADCC isn’t considered a promotion?

The problem with sambo was injuries. Sambo allows striking.

The UFC wants to do a show in Dubai. Allowing UFC fighters to compete in ADCC is a probably a token of good will – it makes the event more high-profile, something the locals probably appreciate.

by MMAEruption on Aug 31, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

There was a grappling tournament at the UFC expo…

by iiowyn on Aug 31, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem is that Samba wasn’t always the major problem in sticking negotiations with Fedor.

Everyone acts like it was the biggest problem, but after the last attempt at negotiations it should be obvious that Sambo was a small concern, if a problem at all.

Is there a way to watch this event live, aside from actually being there?

by Ahhhoki on Aug 31, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Ive been wanting them to broadcast these events live for a long time..

Shari Spencer said a week ago that GSP will NOT be competing in this.

Should we start an Internet petition to send BJ Penn in his place?

by MMAEruption on Aug 31, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

His mom will sign for sure.

I dislike Matt Hughes.

Lame

Was looking forward to his participation. I imagine it was due the to the injury?

by Danny Dangerously on Aug 31, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Is that his manager, the woman who’s always in the cage with him after the fight?

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Prize Money

Is the prize money listed on Wikipedia still accurate? Seems kinda low for an event started by a U.A.E Sheik…

Rumor has it that the sheik knows how to party. I’m sure there are plenty of perks to competing.

great list can’t wait for this one

by drano on Aug 31, 2009 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

It would be interesting to see Maia vs. Nate in this.

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
