Quotes of the Day: Knock out Artists Nate Marquardt and Todd Duffee Talk UFC 102

Natemaia_medium

"I had watched tape on him and kind of noticed how he telegraphed when he kicks and I have a lot of counters for kicks and stuff. I hurt my ankle a couple of weeks ago and I was working with my buddy Dwayne and I asked him ‘How do I counter this if I can't do my normal stuff?' He told me ‘Just step in and throw an overhand right as he kicks.' It was crazy how it worked so easily. This was a highlight reel finish and I'm very excited."

Nate Marquardt at the UFC 102 Post-Fight Press Conference (HT MMA Mania)

"I think it definitely helped build the hype machine that's already been behind me - unwarranted, I felt like. I feel like now we're getting there, but I still feel like I need to go out there and get tested.

"But it did feel great.

"Yeah, I want every fight to end in five seconds with my hand raised. Everyone does. But, I'm in this to find out about myself. You find out something new about yourself every time.

"To me, my performance wasn't any more impressive than what Gabriel Gonzaga came out and did tonight. And it's definitely not any more impressive than Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. That's historical.

"Those guys are history. What I did, it's just a statistic, and it will be broken."

yeah

I was really impressed by Duffee’s post fight comments much more than by his fight — impressive as that was.

Hague had no business being in the UFC. His victory over one-dimensional Pat Barry was a flash in the pan.

by Huggies on Aug 30, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He was needed in the UFC for what happened last night…. A chance to help build up a better prospect….

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 30, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

So now the ufc is utilizing jobbers?

by kanodogg on Aug 30, 2009 3:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

They did sign Phil Baroni…

by Zack Gobie on Aug 30, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously, as in any fighting organization, some fighters are used as “stepping stones” per say. But their promotion of Hague as a legitimate test was near criminal. I guess it goes to show that the UFC marketing machine can promote just about anything.

by Huggies on Aug 30, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

this is bullshit

Hague already had a win against a very promising Pat Barry. The guy has won his share of fights and earned his shot. Clearly he’s not going to be a champion, but there’s nothing wrong with letting a guy who’s earned his shot get his shot.

Sure, he’s won his fair share of fights. And I’m all for bringing in new talent. But the UFC obviously brought him in to be used as a stepping stone for Barry, and things didn’t go according to plan.
Hague is slow and sloppy, and I’ve seen him have trouble defending his KOTC title against 220 lb 0-1 fatasses.
Regardless, the UFC is going to set him up to lose another fight, and release him.

they

should put todd against pat barry, that would be a great fight, along the lines of brock-carwin

by theblade on Aug 30, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you sure you are thinking of Pat Barry?

by Simco on Aug 30, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

yes,

the loss to hague was a fluke imo,

2 young up and coming fighters, both big strikers, i think it would be an interesting fight

I though Nate was going to try and submit Maia to prove how badass he is on the ground?

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

I just saw the Gonzaga fight, it is brutal.

by Jahbulon on Aug 30, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

Oh yeah…

I would say Tuchscherer had some major balls to continue fighting, but…

Was that the first time a fighter vomited inside the octagon?

Man, Todd Duffee just gained himself a fan with those comments.

Seems like a funny guy too

From his UFC page:

What ranks and titles have you held? Self proclaimed Athens, GA all you can eat champion
Favorite Striking technique: the ones that land flush
and he lists “Governator Arnold” as one of his heroes.

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

Duffee comes across as really down to earth and realistic. I’d like to see more of him, for sure.

I wonder how many people were genuinely impressed by Gonzaga dismantling an opponent he is securely better than in every single facet of the sport and who had also just suffered a devastating groin injury.

by Simco on Aug 30, 2009 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

What was he supposed to do, go light on him? He was giving Tuchsherer all the respect he earned by coming back in after that nutshot and fighting to his fullest.

I made no implication that he should have performed differently.

Duffee is part of Heavyweight 2.0…. Bigger, Stronger Faster….

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 30, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Absolutely

and at 260lbs, I hope they give him some actual competition so we can get a start on the division splitting.

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

I’m not sure weight should be a significant factor to increasing the level of a person’s competition.

by Simco on Aug 30, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

So you’re in favor of no weight classes?

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

by mythbuster on Aug 30, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Too true

Duffee needs to fight much sooner than later. I hear that he has already requested for tougher competition. While we don’t know too much about his overall skill, to me, and this is just me jumping on the bandwagon/hype train, I think he will be a future UFC champion. He is just so young and has too much potential not to. He also seems to have some charisma and looks like something out of Universal Soldier, which is always something that’ll help get the UFC hype machine behind him.
