New York Times Covers Fedor Emeliananko Dissing the UFC
From the Old Gray Lady:
Man Considered World’s Top Fighter Rejects His Sport’s Top Brand
By R.M. SCHNEIDERMAN New York Times
Fedor Emelianenko, a champion mixed martial arts fighter from Russia, signed a three-fight deal Monday with Strikeforce, once again depriving the Ultimate Fighting Championship of the chance to lay claim to the man who is widely considered the best mixed martial arts fighter in the world.
The U.F.C. has nearly all of the world’s best professional mixed martial arts fighters, but Emelianenko, a heavyweight, remains elusive.
...In March, Strikeforce signed a multiyear television deal with Showtime. Before the deal, Coker said, Strikeforce was largely a regional-based live event promotion. But the addition of Emelianenko gives it a chance to become the No. 2 mixed martial arts brand in the world, behind the U.F.C.
They also cover the negotiations:
The U.F.C. tried and failed to sign Emelianenko once before, two years ago. It would not disclose how much money it offered him, but in an e-mail message Monday, the U.F.C.’s president, Dana White, expressed frustration in dealing with Emelianenko and his management.
"He turns down a huge deal and the opportunity to face the best in the world to fight nobodies," White said.
Strikeforce has some highly acclaimed heavyweights, but the U.F.C. has a deeper talent pool.
"As far as heavyweights in the world go, Fedor’s the man," said Scott Coker, the chief executive of Strikeforce.
At 6 feet and 235 pounds, Emelianenko (30-1) is relatively undersized for a heavyweight, but has not lost a fight in nine years. Recently, however, some fans and mixed martial arts analysts have criticized the caliber of his opponents. Such criticism is likely to persist.
The important thing to think about when reading NY Times coverage of an issue is that the Times is disproportionately influential media outlet that tells other media outlets how to cover things.
Fedor's ability to generate coverage in the paper of record is a leading indicator of his promotability.

I don’t know, if he was such a big deal why wasn’t this a story the first time he spurned them and signed with Affliction?

Bingo.. look at the headline… Fedor turned down the big bucks and better competition..Thats exactly how the article reads.. IT’s less to do with Fedor and everything to do with the UFC. They are starting to insert doubt into the readers mind’s by releasing the article. It reads plainly that Fedor turned down big money and big fights for the lesser of the 2.. How does that make him look good for future potential marketing ??? Or maybe it’s just me… lol

Well, K-1 is more closely tied to MMA than the others(in terms of perception). And, the rankings are alot about reputation. So, KO’ing the #1 or 2 HW kickboxer in the world, then losing a very close decision to Remy is bound to boost your reputation. Also, AO has crushed a # of guys in MMA recently as well.

Fedor, Arlovski, Barnett, Mir, Brock, Nogueira, Couture, dos Santos, Sylvia, Overeem…although #10 is kinda sketchy.
We have already seen that just losing to the #1 guy doesn’t always drop you multiple spots in the rankings. Neither Mir or Brock was Top-10-ranked before their respective breakthrough wins.

Well...
Having other organizations is good and bad for the fans and the fighters. Good for the fans because we get to see more fights. Bad for the fans because we miss out on some that we really want to see , due to the co-promo bs. Good for the fighters because it gives them a place to work their way up to the UFC, and a place to go if they don’t make it in the UFC. Bad for the fighters when these promotions fold, fights get cancelled and fighters are left in limbo. These guys have families to feed, always is sad when they get the rug pulled out from under them. I doubt we will ever see the day an UFC is cancelled. So basically, even with all this, I think some competition is good.

Based on the data available, the Carano vs. Kelly Kobold fight was the hit of the night, adding 950,000 viewers from the previous segment. That makes Carano two-for-two as the top ratings mover. Carano’s fight with Kaitlin Young on May 31 added 1,020,000 viewers.
The disappointment of the night was Andrei Arlovski. The former UFC heavyweight champion’s fight with Roy Nelson, the last IFL heavyweight champ, lost 110,000 viewers from the Carano fight.
Proof, you should try it more often.

Her fight on EliteXC: Heat had higher ratings than any other part of the show, sans Kimbo. People tuned in for her too.
Secondly, if she is such a shitty draw, why in the world was the UFC so interested in signing her?

This argument started over me saying that Gina can’t outdraw Fedor/ So, Fedor brought in about 250,000 for his Affliction fights, right? If Gina was such a draw get her on PPV. There is a reason that card is on showtime instead of PPV.

The reason she is not on a PPV is because Strikeforce can’t market for shit, not because she isn’t a big draw. She’d be on a UFC PPV.

I don't see it
If Strikeforce is going to be successful, they have to make Fedor a household name, right? If anybody in MMA is going to be a household name, it’s going to be Brock Lesnar. I don’t understand how Strikeforce thinks they can win this
“This guy here is the best MMA fighter in the world! You’ve never heard of him. You’ve never seen him fight. But trust us! He’s the best. He’s big in Japan!”
“Over here is Brock Lesnar. Look at him. Freaky, huh? He’s going to fight this guy Cain Velasquez. On free TV. Oooh, he sure did a number on Velasquez. He’s quite a monster isn’t he America? He’ll be hosting SNL next week too, don’t forget.”
“No, no, no, wait! Fedor won 381 fights! He’s going to fight..um..this other guy you’ve never heard of!”
“Hey, here’s this guy Cheick Kongo. He’s a big dude, huh? Let’s watch Lesnar tear him apart too! Wow! Oh man, did you see what Lesnar did at the post-fight interview? Insane! Man, that guy is crazy!”
“Wait, wait! Fedor has something to say. Well, Fedor doesn’t speak English. But his translator says that….”
No. Contest.

The real question is whether Lorne would be willing to give up fifty percent of all future profits and put Jerry Millen in all future Chris Katan and Jimmy Fallon projects. My assumption is that he’d eventually end up with MADtv.

Lorne probably needed to give up 50% control 15 years ago.
Adding Jerry Millen to all future Chris Katan and Jimmy Fallon projects wouldn’t hurt. -200 × 0 = 0.
MADtv is already canceled. Is it still to late to blame this on Fedor/M-1?
Adding a pudgy Russian who cannot speak a lick of english would probably be a better guest host than 30% of what they had.

Fedor’s ability to generate coverage in the paper of record is a leading indicator of his promotability.
Smart move – gives him more leverage for round 3! Lets bring it on! Besides he has a 3 fight deal with Strikeforce, which is ironically the exact number of worthwhile heavyweights that Strikeforce has. Not a smart move on Dana’s part to diss Fedor given that he’ll get another crack at him in a years time.

Lesnar, most likely doesn’t face BOTH Carwin and Velasquez, since they’re both facing each other for the shot. It’s probably more like Carwin/Velasquez, Nogueira/Couture, Crocop/DosSantos. If that combo ends up being Carwin, Nog, and CroCop, people will be impressed, but not blown away.

You’re completely overestimating the importance of things like this. Fedor’s past issues with the UFC were also covered by the NYT, as well as the Affliction/UFC war in July 2008. They still completely bombed on PPV. This is not coverage that leads to anything meaningful. He is relatively promotable, nowhere near the level of Gina Carano, yet he costs 20 times more.
Fedor-Overeem on PPV is a 60,000 buy fight that costs an insane amount. If you add a big Gina fight maybe you get over 100k, but at least Sylvia and Arlovski were former UFC names that people knew. Overeem, Rogers, and Werdum are nobodies.
The other thing people aren’t considering is the fact that Strikeforce is not very good at promoting MMA! The biggest myth in the world is how Coker is so incredible at this. So far they’ve completely screwed up the promotion of their second show (actually was down from the first with a poor number), and they have no idea what they’re doing with Carano and Cyborg. You get the feeling that if Strikeforce got Randy vs. Fedor they’d promote it around the fact that both men fought Kevin Randleman.

Not to mention Showtime is having to much input on their product. That’s kind of a recipe for disaster in long term

But!
According to Lorreta Hunt, Carano/Cyborg was going to get more mainstream press than UFC 100!

It will be interesting to see how much press it does get. UFC got no mainstream press until the Wednesday before 100, and then it just exploded. Still, the post-fight coverage was mostly driven by Lesnar, I think the only fair comparison is pre-fight.

I just don't think that Carano/Cyborg will THAT big...
I mean sure, Carano has a certain amount of mainstream appeal, but nobody outside of hardcores knows who “Cyborg” is. Also, womens fights have a hard time drawing(obviously).

I have to agree with you. I think Hunt was way off base with that statement, but Rome’s right. We won’t be able to fully gauge the amount of pre-fight hype for this Carano/Cyborg event until mid to late fight week. Still though, it seems almost impossible for this fight to match the pre-fight press that UFC 100 got, and it will surely not match the post-fight press.

Fred.. I completely agree with you… And I’ll take it even further..
Fred.. I completely agree with you… And I’ll take it even further..If Cyborg wins, you’ll see a “RAPID” decline in the interest in womens MMA. The main pointof attraction is the pretty face and personality of Gina.. Gina is the “only” draw for womens MMA appeal. Erin Toughill is also attractive, but that’s really about it..

So the majority appeal is not there to begin with, because the majority of people watching sport’s are men & boys.. Gina is a pretty face that’s been built up, but you’re naive if you think that people “honestly” care about womens MMA.. MMA as it stand’s has a hard enough time gaining acceptance from the men’s side of things, do you really think womens MMA is going to stand on it’s own 2 feet ??

the thing about the carano fight is how much credit are they giving her for being a drawing power when really it was FREE mma on Network tv, also kimbo had a heck of alot to do with those numbers….
for ex. my wife likes carano but would she go outta her way to watch her fight? no. come the 15th tho if im watchin it and i say hey baby gina is about to fight, will she watch? sure, but only because im allready watching it

Very good point & you’re absolutely right…
Anyone will tune in when it’s FREE.. But is the product really worth buying ?? I dont have enough room in my budget for 2 MMA PPV’s per month.. I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch the fight on Showtime (which I have a subscription). I’m a die hard.. But I also dont put a whole lot of effort into “every” fight outside the big draws (UFC). I, like most, usually try to catch it or the results, on the net.. If I’m not doing anything and it happens to come on, then sure I’ll watch it.. But I wouldnt go out of my way to see it live & especially if I have to pay for it..
That’s the mentality of most of the general public.

That’s what people don’t get.
Coker is really good at filling up The Pond (especially when Cung Le and/or Frank Shamrock are fighting).
Filling up the Pond is not going to make M1 happy, they’re going to need more. They’re going to need serious help from Showtime and CBS to get that thing done properly, and they really havne’t shown that they could do it either when it comes to MMA.
by Phildo on Aug 4, 2009 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Tell me I'm retarded
Here’s what happens Coker put all his cards on the table. Dana was giving him a pass up until he went for the gold. CBS + Strikeforce does not equal ABC/ESPN + HBO. Yeah, I said HBO. Like they’re not watching this mess.
And yeah, the UFC will take fighters from Strikeforce because they can. Big poo poo for Strikeforce but if you’re Coker you gotta try that.
IMO there does need to be one premiere league for MMA and the UFC is obviously it. It just looks like it might take a little longer. But, this might help MMA in the long run – regarding fighter contracts and sponsership deals – and driving one more competing org. into the ground.
Strikeforce should have tried to stay in the minor leagues.

Yeah but Strikeforce was the best set up for it.
It’s different because there isn’t a MMA high school league (yet). Coker screwed himself.

I posted this as a reply in another thread but it applies here too
To be honest.. I don’t get where people keep saying nobody knows who Fedor is.. He has been widely acclaimed as the sport’s top dog for many years now. Everyone is aware of who he is. While "most" simply don’t care because they never see anything about him on a personal level. He has zero personality or charisma. He’s identical to Ivan Drago.. A Russian robot that does what he’s told. He doesn’t connect with fans and now more apparent than ever, he simply has shown he has less interest in what his fans really care about.
Bottom line is that Fedor is "not" a draw (to the buying public). He doesnt sell tickets to events where people have to "pay" to see him because nobody has ever seen his personality.. If he had any type of personality, most major media outlets would have picked up on him for not only being the best, but for his ability to connect with the general public in some sort of way..
The hardcore’s simply haven’t ever understood this. They still don’t realize that they themselves are the "minority", Fedor’s name has been brought up MANY times on mainstream media outlets.. But once the general media start diving in to find out more about the guy, all they get is a man with a poor looking physique, that simply doesn’t say anything at all, & doesn’t take the time to even "try" to crossover to communicate.. And to top that all off, it’s even harder to promote a guy that doesn’t have right’s to any previous fight footage to boot. The UFC have hindered Fedor’s appeal, even without him being in their organization, due to the fact that every time they scoop up a fledgling organization, they also take ownership of their video library.. Fedor’s best years have been in PRIDE.. Kind of hard to promote a guy that no one can see fight. isn’t it ???
Another key thing is that, even Fedor’s handlers & management are poor personalities. They themselves come off, very robotish. With Ed Soares you at least get some kind of translation and he takes the time to help his fighters cross over (even if it is very few words).. The fact that they make an effort says a lot. Where as Fedor’s handlers themselves dont have much to say. They "try" to come off humble.. But sometimes the general media need a little personality to relate to. Either it forces them to love you or love to hate you. Fedor seems very Ivan Drago’ish. He doesn’t do a lot of press, & when he does, he doesn’t say too many words. His handlers don’t even speak English so they wind up with a regular translator who doesn’t know "how" to spice it up & play to the media. I respect humble, but I also want to see who he really is.. It’s just not appealing as to what we’ve been given outside the "fights" themselves..
So in closing, I’ll say that Fedor has not been a draw, not for lack of not trying, but for lack proper social skills & communication. Fedor needs desperately to have a PR firm built to cater him and his image .. He need’s a translator with a little personality while he takes the time to learn how to cross over himself. Some will say he doesn’t need to, and fortunately they’re probably right. However, for the bigger picture, if he want’s to have any success "past" his contract numbers and want’s to stay relevant in the public’s eye, he desperately needs to conform to some of those things or it’s going to be the same cycle repeating itself, as we’ve seen every time previous…

What leads you to believe he has any charisma ?? Is it his offbeat smile from time to time ?? Are you fluent in Russian ?? Is he saying something that’s not been translated properly that the majority of the English speaking world is missing ?? I’m not downign you by any means.. I only ask because maybe you’ve seen something or know something the majority isn’t getting at this point ??

The quiet little puppy dog eyes act would go a long way if he just learned to speak English. That goes for a lot of the international fighters plying their trade in the west – Learn English and your marketability will benefit.

Granted, this was in Korea. Clearly what he needs to do to demonstrate charisma to the UFC audience is to engage in some ultimate trash talking.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Not trash talking per say.. But at least try to communicate to your audience in a manner other than a brief smile and I’m happy to be here (through translation).. We’re in the fight business.. You dont have to be cordial and polite “all the time”.. A liitle human emotion and a little reaction every now and then is not so bad..
Also I’m sure he has a personality in Russia.. Why not try to convey that same personality here as well ???
