Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Kyle Set for Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg
MMAWeekly is reporting that Fabricio Werdum's heavyweight bout is back on for August 15th against MMA badboy Mike Kyle:
After several initial reports, including one on MMAWeekly.com, that Fabricio Werdum had been removed from the Strikeforce "Carano vs. Cyborg" fight card, MMAWeekly.com has now confirmed that he will participate on the Aug. 15 event.
"We’ve agreed to fight Mike (Kyle). As I sit hear speaking to you, that’s the fight," Werdum’s manager, Richard Wilner, told MMAWeekly.com early Monday afternoon. Wilner said he even confirmed with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker that the fight was on after seeing several online reports to the contrary.
"The only question that remains is whether or not it will be on the televised or untelevised portion of card. I don’t know if maybe they make it a swing bout," said Wilner. "I’m leaning towards the untelevized portion."
As many fans recall, Werdum was set to take on the newly-powerful heavyweight behemoth Alistair Overeem, but Overeem's hand was injured in an altercation at a nightclub. Werdum's replacement was rumored to potentially be Fedor Emelianenko when Affliction lost their main event headliner in Josh Barnett due to a positive steroid test, but that fight would have happened at Affliction: Trilogy. Instead, the event was cancelled, and Fedor Emelianenko has been announced as signing with Strikeforce.
Werdum is currently 11-4 with his last fight coming at UFC 90 against Junior Dos Santos that saw Werdum on the end of a massive right uppercut that put him out of the UFC. He hasn't fought since that bout. Mike Kyle is currently 12-6, coming off an upset victory over Rafael Calvancante at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields. Kyle was suspended indefinitely by the CSAC for illegally kneeing Brian Olsen back at WEC 20 in May of 2006, but has bounced back after a two year layoff from the suspension with a 3-1 record in his last four fights.

Better fight for Werdum to be coming off of a loss.

It’s still a pretty shitty downgrade.

NO
Werdum needed a win after a loss so this is good, plus, I am sure Overeem vs Fedor may be coming soon. =)

This sounds vaguely familiar, both for Werdum’s last fight, and Kyle’s.

so Werdum gets a Light Heavyweight?
How thin is Strikeforce that every card has fights between two guys who are completely different weight classes?

although kyle has fought a hw before i think.

You’d think they could get a better opponent.

I, once again, turn to Jeff Monson. Seriously, why has Strikeforce not used him?

I think that this fight being booked suggests that we’ll see Fedor vs. Rogers for he Interim Heavyweight Championship on the October show.

This would be nice. Would like to see Rogers ground game tested.

it could be rogers or overeem if his hand heals in time. plus alstair has said he wants to fight fedor

If Mike Kyle beats Werdum, then its one less credible opponent for Fedor. This doesn’t make any sense.

Werdoom hasn’t fought since UFC 90 (Oct 08). Guy needs to eat.

He ate too much, that’s why Dos Santos KO’d him.

They couldn’t get Monson, Yvel, or Buentello to take this fight? I mean, how hard did they try to get an opponent for Werdum?
by KahilBS_Marshal on Aug 3, 2009 6:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If the plan is build up your heavyweight division you don’t want your top assets to take fights on a 10 day notice.
by bignerd on Aug 3, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Plus, Buentello is back with the UFC, I believe.
by madiq on Aug 3, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope, he is not. He is somewhere stuck in the Affliction mess and Strikeforce.

true, just saw that…said he has 1 fight left for strikeforce or something??

I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I read this.

Can we fighter-bash Mike Kyle?
Let’s just redirect our venom away from Fedor/Vladdy/Dana/whoever you want to blame the fallout on, and target it at someone who deserves it. Illegal soccer kick, ignoring the ref, requiring several refs to stop him from beating an unconscious opponent. How is this guy still licensed?

It seems that there’s a short list of fighters you can’t bash. Kyle better not be on it.

Well, he was on a two-year hiatus. Even though we can sit here and say.. hey, the guy’s nuts… almost everyone gets a second chance. He hasn’t done that shit yet, but I see your point. He probably shouldn’t be licensed.

If Kyle can’t be licensed than Yvel shouldn’t be either IMO. Not defending Kyle, I think they should both be banned.
