I PLAYED THESE GEESE LIKE DANA WHITE

"Fedor and I are here in the States. If they want to come out and fly here, we are ready to conduct negotiations." - Shady Russian Vadim Finkelchtein, teasing Zuffa, Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, the MMA community, and these three geese. (M-1 Global)

"I was so confident this was going to happen. I literally did everything." - UFC President Dana White, who probably didn't literally do everything.  (MMA Mania)

"Everything that he wanted, he could go fight in Sambo every [expletive] Thursday night if he wants to." - White (Cage Writer)

"Nyet." - Finkelchtein.  I believe that's Russian for "Reasonable offers mean nothing to us." (L.A. Times)

"We will work only on co-promotion conditions." - Finkelchtein

"The closest thing to it, you’ve got a basketball and you’re at a basketball court — and I know this sounds silly, but you go to the basketball court with your basketball." - All-around asshole Gary "Jerry" Millen, adding nothing to the conversation. (MMA Fanhouse)

"And there’s a guy there with a pocketful of money and goes ‘Hey man, I’m going to buy your ball and you’re going to sit in the bench and watch me play ball with your ball.’ To me that’s a sell-out." - Millen.  It's also called "good business."

"We’re not asking for anything that’s crazy, we’re willing to take half the risk. We’re willing to take half the profit or half the loss." - Millen.  Half the risk of zero is still zero, asshole.

"It’s basically them coming in saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got this guy, and some people say he might be the best heavyweight in the world, so for that we want half your business.’" - White, with a little better handle on the situation.

"They can call me right now, they can call me tomorrow, they can call me next month. I’m ready to roll." - White

Star-divide

PREACH IT, BROTHER

"I don’t worry about the outcomes, winning, or money." - UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. (Fighter's Only)

"It’s not interesting for me to expose myself and run unnecessary risks." - Silva.  I'm a little interested in seeing you expose yourself, Spider.

"I’m getting old and since I started fighting I never had a scratch or my face broken. Anyone who knows about fighting can see what I mean." - Silva.  I think anyone with a set of eyes can see that, sir.

"God forgive me for saying it, but we’re years ahead of some fighters." - Silva.  Fighters like Chris Leben, Kalib Starnes, and Ryo Chonan, amirite?

COULDN'T WE JUST HAVE A BLACK-ON-BLACK MANLOVEFEST?

"He says things that someone in the Klan would say to us." - "King" Mo Lawal, on the loud-mouthed, free swinging Quinton "Rampage Jackson. (Fight Hype)

"I think Rampage wants to be the only one. I don’t know if he wants to be the only brotha. I don’t know what it is." - Former UFC light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans, who will fight Jackson at UFC 107. (Fight Hype)

"Vernon Forrest was shot to death this weekend. Black people are killing each other, and he's joking about that?" - Lawal

LEFTOVER FEDOR

"People from other countries just don’t walk in and jump in business with the Fertitta brothers. There has to be full background checks and all kinds of crazy shit." - UFC President Dana White.  With the Fertittas being regulated by the Nevada Gaming Commission, Zuffa has extra due diligence that must be done. (Sherdog)

"I would enjoy fighting Fedor; hopefully the UFC can seal something together and I think the best should absolutely fight the best and if that's what they want, that's what they are going to have to try to get." - UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, who just got more popular. (USA Today via Bloody Elbow)

"All these talks about 'strict' contract terms with signing with UFC, come only from Vadim Finkelstein, who wants to push his owns business projects through Fedor's fights." - Fedor's younger brother Aleksander Emelianenko, at his local Hepatitis clinc. (Sports.ru)

PARTING SHOTS

"I got pretty much owned on the ground." - Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir, on his fight with Brock Lesnar at UFC 100. (Cage Writer)

"I believe I trained too long." - UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn, explaining his loss to Georges St. Pierre.  Another reason for his loss?  Not being able to jump out of a three foot pool. (MMA Weekly)

"It was kind of funny, but I did need a hug. No one ever gave me a hug before." - WEC bantamweight champ Miguel Torres, on a hug given to him by Mark Dellagrotte. (Cage Writer)

"I'd like it to be Josh Barnett, since he won't be fighting in the United States." - Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. (Tatame)

"And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom! Win-win, bitch." - Former UFC light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin, making it really hard for me not to like him. (MMA Weekly)

“We’re not asking for anything that’s crazy, we’re willing to take half the risk. We’re willing to take half the profit or half the loss.”

Yeah, half the profit…because fedor would clearly draw half the money an event makes. And half the loss is a big risk too…because I know how many UFC shows end up in the red these days.

What did Rampage say that pissed those guys off?

by toxic on Aug 3, 2009 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

the corny black on black crime line...

that he has been using for YEARS but everyone seems to think originated with the Rashad thing

I think it's more than that

I just get the impression that Mo doesn’t like the way Rampage portrays himself as a black MMA fighter. Although, I’m not sure Mo is any better… lol

“Vernon Forrest was shot to death this weekend. Black people are killing each other, and he’s joking about that?” – Lawal

is a direct reference to the black on black crime thing

Yes, it is

But it’s not JUST about the “black on black crime” thing. That was an example of why Mo didn’t like Rampage in the context of why he doesn’t like how Rampage represents a black MMA fighter… Let me see if I can find the interview he did that pretty much breaks that all down.

Here we go
"People are saying that I’m playing myself because I said the "N" word," said the 28 year old native to Murfreesboro, Tennessee in reaction from some of the recent criticism he has received from a small minority fans. "Well you now what, I can say the "N" word. I talk professional around the right people, but when I’m around my people I’m going to talk how I feel like talking. Because I could talk slang like I do with my friends in the South and ordinary people would not understand me. Rampage doesn’t see it but he’s playing himself, and his race. He was talking about "black on black crime", "Oh, you dark, you ugly". That’s something a white supremacist would say. He’s playing himself and the whole race. He’s saying stuff that black people say amongst each other but he’s saying that shit all in the open, and the average UFC fan might think that’s something that’s cool to say. Like that black on black crime shit isn’t funny. He never clowned Dan Henderson like that, and he never clowned Wanderlei Silva like that, but when it comes to me and Rashad he wants to try to crack racial jokes. That shit isn’t funny."

Read the rest here: http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2009/07/27/muhammed-king-mo-lawal-rampage-is-playing-himself/comment-page-1/

I’m sure you can interpret that many ways, but I really get the impression that he doesn’t like how Rampage represents himself as a black MMA fighter. You know,… with the whole “That’s something a white supremacist would say. He’s playing himself and the whole race” comment. shrug

Breaking news: Strikeforce signs Fedor Emelianenko to multi-fight deal, M-1 to co-promote
After last week’s negotiations with the UFC failed due to co-promoting demands, Fedor Emelianenko has instead signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC’s biggest competitor, Strikeforce.

The organization today announced it has signed Emelianenko to a multi-fight deal that will have him fight under the Strikeforce banner in events co-headlined M-1 Global. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

No specific date has been determined for his first Strikeforce fight, but Emelianenko will make his promotional debut this fall on Showtime, according to today’s announcement.

“No one ever gave me a hug before.”

They tried, but you kept breaking their arms, Miguel.

“The closest thing to it, you’ve got a basketball and you’re at a basketball court — and I know this sounds silly, but you go to the basketball court with your basketball. And there’s a guy there with a pocketful of money and goes ‘Hey man, I’m going to buy your ball and you’re going to sit in the bench and watch me play ball with your ball.’ To me that’s a sell-out.”

The problem here is that, to continue this terrible metaphor, the UFC isn’t in the market to buy a basketball owner. They’re in the market for a ball.

Does M-1 remind you of other slimy businessmen? I hear that crap about co-promotion and I get reminded of the RIAA/MPAA or that crazy AP thing about DRM for text. Also: people who talk about moving to a subscription model for software licensing. “You know how you’re paying $199 for the software? We’d like you to pay $59/month instead. SAVINGS!”

I showed up to the YMCA today with a basketball and asked for half ownership… It didn’t go too while.

by Dropkick434 on Aug 3, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s in the contract that Gary Millen or M-1 have to stay and watch Fedor play basketball (or fight). If I went to a basketball court with a high quality basketball, and some highly credible guy offers me millions of dollars for it, I’ll take it. I don’t care if I get to play or not.

Even if I took a friend’s ball with me, I’d still sell it. They would be pissed if I didn’t. Millen is just an idiot.
