UFC 102 Results: Nate Marquardt Knocks Out Demian Maia

Mma_marquardt_200_mediumIn a fight that most hardcore fans considered to be far and away the most meaningful fight on the card, Nate Marquardt sent a message to the middleweight division.

Meeting in the middle of the Octagon, Marquardt caught Maia dropping his guard to fire a leg kick and caught him with a powerful straight punch to finish the fight in 0:21 seconds.

Maia is the most feared jiu jitsu artist in the division, but grappling never came into play as Marquardt dropped him with a straight right that knocked him off his feet.

Looking down at his stunned opponent, Marquardt declined to follow Maia down and let the referee call the fight.

After the bout, Marquardt told Joe Rogan that "if you want someone who will kick Anderson Silva's butt, you'll give me the title shot." Reacting in the crowd, middleweight champion Anderson Silva made faces in response.

Silva doesn’t need to learn English with facial expressions like that

Funny you say that...

Watch Leites vs. Marquardt first round…Nate does a little bit of flying himself

Looked the same as Silva vs. Irvin.

I said before that Nate would destroy him, people were too attatched to Maia’s nuts to care about how far along Nate has come.

Hell of a KO.

Great punch tonight..

It doesn’t matter how far Nate has come though.. Silva is on a whole different planet..

Nate’s strongest weapon is his standup.. He’ll get picked apart once again if he faces Silva..

Think of it playing out just as the 2 Franklin fights went.. Once he has been in the cage with you & you could show nothing.. It wont fair much different in the second outing.. Silva needs to leave the MW division and finish his career in super fights.. He’s forcing top guys out of the division.. Franklin.. Gone… Hendo said if he doesn’t get his shot at Silva.. He’s gone.. Hendo get’s his shot and loses a second time ?? Gone…

Nate would end up the same way.. Nate is like the Kenny Florian of the MW division IMO. He’s good enough to beat everyone below the current champ.. Franklin I think would beat Nate as well..

This is a different Nate I keep telling people but they just don’t listen the guy is GSP after his loss to Hughes in their first fight. He’s demolished guys left and right Nate is the guy he’s finally taken all his talent and potential and is using it to become the best mma fighter he can be. There is no way that Dana can overlook him after this fight, Nate is the number 1 contender without a dout and the only guy who can beat Anderson at MW book it Dana.

Nate beats Anderson?

Too slow, too short, never gonna happen.

I was bummed that this didn’t go a little longer, but much respect to Nate. That was a punch. Also, it was classy as hell for him to let up like that when he knew Maia was KO’d.

Just as people were to attached to Damien's nuts to see that Nate was gonna steam roll him, people are blind to the fact that Anderson's about to get chewed up.

By a fighter with some class, unlike himself. Its amazing how arrogant and disrespectful he’s become since he started believing all the hype about himself. i realize he’s an amazing fighter but character is much to be desired. i look forward to seeing him fight Nate or Hendo,

Yeah, that's already happened

And they both got their asses kicked. BADLY.

I was way wrong.

I didn’t see this happening at all. I guess there is a DEFINITIVE answer to Maia’s striking and chin.

I’d much rather see the winner of Henderson vs. Marquardt compete for the title. Sorry beating Bisping and Maia does not really earn you a title shot.

Wow, with fans like this, it sucks to be Nate

On the one hand, you admit that you thought Maia was almost unstoppable, but once he gets stopped you immediately claim that beating him is meaningless. Guy cant’ catch a break.

What?

Isn’t that what we watched last night, Nate vs Maia?

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

just guessing

but I think he meant Silva, not Maia

by GetItOn on Aug 31, 2009 6:38 AM EDT up reply actions

a guy can only beat the opponents that are in front of him.

These guys both deserve title shots. everybody gets too caught up in the unbeatable champion buzz. it’ll always seem like number one contenders aren’t as good because they obviously aren’t fighting and beating established number one contender’s like the champion is. im not interested in seeing anderson fight heavyweights that match up bad against him, like Frank Mir who has a terrible wrestling shot, and whom anderson will not follow to the ground after stunning him with his superior speed. i wanna see him where he is at his most dominant. 185, witch is obvious.

IDK dude

he’s been just as dominant at LHW and I honestly believe that he could clear out that division as well. Besides Machida of course. We all know that’s never going to happen.
