Georges St. Pierre Breaks Down Randy Couture vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102

Gspufc65_medium

"To win, both of them has to do their games. I think that if the fight stays in the center of the octagon, Nogueira will win it, but if it goes to the fence, Couture wins, because he'll be able to use the fence to block the submissions", bets the Canadian, revealing the strategy that he'd use. "If I were Nogueira, I'd try to keep the fight in the center of the octagon, and, if I were Randy, I'd close to the fence", finished St. Pierre.

GSP talking to Tatame.com

This is a good point that is either so obvious that no one else has bothered to make it or no one else has thought it through. Let's assume that Nogueira comes into the fight with a level of mobility and explosiveness comparable to the last Heath Herring fight. That Nogueira would have a considerable advantage against Couture on the feet as long as he can avoid the clinch and Couture's dirty boxing. Sure it's doubtful that Big Nog could KO Randy, but the reverse is also true. What Big Nog at his best can do is score points with good combinations of punches at range.

Similarly if the fight goes to the ground in the center of the cage: advantage Nogueira because his guard game is aggressive enough to catch anyone, even Couture. But put him against the fence and he has virtually no chance of sweeping Couture. Without the ability to threaten sweeps, Nog will have a very hard time catching Couture in an arm bar or a triangle.

Rogan: “So Rampage, what were you thinking during the fight with Dan? What was your strategy coming in?”

Page: “I was thinkin, man, I gotta do somethin or Dan’s gonna whoop my ass… I busted my knuckles upside his head, that foo’s got a hard head… Most people don’t know, but I got JIU JITSU.”

I remember the interview going something like that, and I just rewatched 75 last weekend on SPIKE

I think center and edge are over simplifications, but yeah. GSP is combining his athletic ability with his new(ish) ability to sum up and break down a fight. We will se how it works out. Lets see him go out on a limb and pick a fight, though.

Nate,

can you confirm the reports people have talked about on here about Nog getting KO’d in sparring repeatedly? If that is true, then Nog definitely has to worry on his feet. And I do not Randy falling into a sub like Sylvia did on the ground.

Is that something anyone can confirm?

I’m not entirely sure I’d want it to be confirmed. Maybe Nog is “doing a Mir”?

Well it came from somewhere I am assuming.

I doubt his camp is floating info like this because it really is not likely to change Randy’s gameplan.

by dnevil001 on Aug 27, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe that's the point?

A more aggressive striker is more likely to get caught with a counter or a sub.

I don’t really care if it’s true or not. I don’t see either man getting back into title contention with Brock, Carwin, Velasquez, Rothwell and Nelson coming into the mix (as well as some potentials from the new TUF season).

But Randy is not a known aggressive striker.

I could this if it was a young fighter who could be baited into something, but it seems doubtful that Randy is like “Nog is getting KO’d in sparring! I am going to KO him too!”

so far as i can tell, this is the only site generating the ‘Nog getting KOd repeatedly in camp’ rumor. Two of the mods here ( i think they’re mods) have said they ‘heard’ this and cant say from where. i really dont know what to think about it. maybe they were just curious about whether a rumor on this site could affect the line.. or maybe it was leaked just for shits and grins to counter randy’s ’i’m gonna submit nog’ garbage…

personally, i dont buy the rumor….

I have been wondering

what Rome’s source was in that article, but it did scare me a little.

This fight is weird for me cause i’ve always been a big fan of Randy and Nog, but going to Xtreme Couture I feel like I should be rooting for Randy… but then again, I think about the prospect of seeing a fighting fit Nogueira facing off against Lesnar… and I get excited. Whereas with Randy, I just don’t know if he could win in a rematch.

At any rate, what i’m hoping for is a competitive war between both, that kind of gives them both a bit of a boost (kind of like what Chuck/ Wand did for both fighters).

I heard it and believe the person who told me. There’s no way I’m betting on Nog, the idea that I’m trying to push the line for him is ridiculous.

It’s funny, we’re led to believe every fight that each fighter had the best camp they ever had. But in reality that’s usually not the case. As soon as a report goes otherwise people flip out. You know, it’s quite possible to be knocked out in sparring, it doesn’t mean he’s dead or anything. It’s happened to a number of fighters.

by Michael Rome on Aug 27, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

If Fedor’s never been KO’ed in camp I’d be shocked.

by Michael Rome on Aug 27, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

2 things

One, I do think that Randy will win. Neil Melanson has told me that basically Randy’s jits has improved unbelievably just in the last 2 months or so that they’ve been working together, and if Nog isn’t @ 100%, then I see Randy taking the reins on this bout.

And two, I think Fedor would have to be some sort of Demi- god to NOT ever have been knocked out sparring, especially considering that he trains with guys like Aleks, Zentsov, and Mousasi.

i’m not trying to attack any of BE staff on a personal level. i can now see that i questioned your integrity w/ my gambling comment and i will refrain from making similiar comments in the future

Now, i am saying that this is an incredible rumor. i also like rumors and want to see them posted here. but for me, and many others judging from other posts i’ve seen, just saying ‘anonymous source’ isn’t enough. i wholly appreciate the relationship a reporter has with an anonymous source and understand the reasons one wouldn’t get too specific .

how’s this? how many degreees of separation does your source have from the person who witnessed Nog KOd multiple times? did he witness it himself or was it a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy? is this a fair question?

by Headkick on Aug 27, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

that's fair

but it’s also up to Rome’s discretion — if you give away too much info, it becomes easy for people to figure out who his source is, and then there’s no more source.

also, the ban warning came from me. ; )

no

as I stated before they were nothing more than rumors coming from people who had access to Nog’s camp.
That kind of stuff could be true, it could be BS put out by Big Nog’s camp to get Couture feeling complacent, it could be BS coming from a sparring partner who wants to brag to people about KO’ing Big Nog in training, it could be a misunderstanding of what they saw by someone who was in the gym briefly.
It’s interesting information, but please people, when I say something is a rumor it is by definition unconfirmed.

In all fairness

When Herring kicked Nog in the head in his first UFC fight, he wobbled back to his stool. Joe Rogan was hopping up and down on his stool like an excited baboon screaming, “Nog is really hurt! He needs help back to his corner” and then Herring decided to not throw any punches for half of the second round.

Mir isn’t the first to expose Nog as being less than optimal in the standup department these days and I suspect if Tim Sylvia hadn’t made a stupid mistake in their fight, he would have finished Nog off too.

But I do not see the benefit of his own camp releasing this info. Randy is not the type of fighter who would change his attack based on this info. And being hurt in the last fight did not change his ability to take a shot.

there's a key distinction you're missing

everyone with access to Nog’s camp isn’t from his camp if you get the distinction. a big time fight camp has dozens of people coming in and out all the time, many of whom have only minor business relationships with the principle fighter and less loyalty.

It’s interesting seeing how much time Randy is spending with Quinton Chong. Are we going to see something new from Randy in this fight?

One thing that I come back to is that while Randy is always improving or adding new tricks, I feel like Nog has been the same fighter for years now. He’s only training to get back to old form, not add new things. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong, but I can’t remember the last time I saw Nogueira fight and was shocked by his improvement in a certain area or his addition of a new skill.

it all comes down to if it really was staph that affected him so much last time. Randy looked as good as possible against Lesnar, but Nog looked awful against Mir, and that’s why everyone seems to be sympathetic for Nog even before the fight. But I think this fight is tailor made for Randy. he’s fighting an at least slowed down nog, and should be able to change levels enough to punish Nog and clinch him, get the takedown on the fence for three rounds. I hope to see him go to finish, but its definately looking like a decision

by Austin Martin on Aug 27, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Randy can finish Nog. You’re right that it all depends on just how good a shape Nog is in, and whether his last fight was an aberration due to the health problems or not. But I think Nog gets finished. I think it’s a bit of both, and I don’t think he’s all there like he used to be physically.

that should not have affected his ability to withstand punishment. Which is what Nog is known for & I would bet that was not the first time he had an injury during camp.

Just my opinion, but I find it hard to believe that having a staph infection would cause a man who is known for his ability to take punishment to all of the sudden become KOable. And growing up in Brazil & fighting his entire life, I would suspect this is not the first staph infection Nog has had during camp, but I could be mistaken.

This was also with Randy way out of fight shape, he gassed out in it. I forget the date but I think it was during his short retirement. Nog is going to have a more powerful but less tricky guard.
