Quote of the Day: Prepping for UFC 102, Demian Maia Rates His Striking a "5"
Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Can you win this fight with Nate if you guys are standing the whole time or do you have to get the fight to the ground?
Demian Maia: I prefer to get the fight to the ground for sure.
Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your standup at this juncture in your career?
Demian Maia: I think it's about five right now, but I'm working hard.
Demian Maia talking to MMA Mania. At least he's honest.

According to UFC Undisputed, Gouveia is much better at submissions than Maia.
I pick Lesnar to win this fight.
In UFC Undisputed (the video game), Wilson Gouveia has higher submission offense and defense (I think) scores than Demian Maia does. It’s kind of along the same vein as Rashad being rated 92 overall.
The latter part was a joke. In reality, I pick Marquardt to win by decision. I love both of these fighters so I will be happy and not-surprised no matter what happens.
i know what you meant.. what was “i didn’t know that”, not “please explain what UFC Undisputed is” hahaha. ;)
…i bet you’d be surprised if maia wins by KO.

the more i listen to what Maia has to say
the more i like him. he is like john mccain (when not running for elected office)with a cool accent, he tells it like it is
agreed
i have a man crush on how maia says jiu jitsu

at least he's realistic
unlike Frank Mir, Maia actually understands his weaknesses and gameplans for them.
A wise man told me don't argue with fools
Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who
how can Mir be realistic about that?
when he has no weaknesses?

Mir’s only weakness is that he has so few opponents to fight…
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
Mir only loses whens he gameplans to lose

and he only gameplans to lose to throw Brock off for the threematch

who knows
but I think it just needs to be good enough to distract Nate long enough to clinch and get it to the ground. but im worried for Damian if it stays on the feet.
5 on a scale from 1 to 10 makes him just about the worst striker in the UFC.
I love how open he is about his intention not to strike. His opponents know exactly what he’s going to do, and he still manages to do it.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Sonnen is morally opposed to defending submissions.
Keep firing Assholes!
ZE GOGGLES! ZAY DO NOZING!!!!
He overpowered & abused Miller. That impressed me after he got steamrolled by Maia. I also think everyone is so scared of Maia’s jits that they freeze up a little. I don’t expect Marquardt to do that. I bet he happily takes Maia down & grinds on him for 3 rds.
I like both guys too!
Agreed
But i think Nate shuts him down. He’s got allot more ways to finish this fight.

5 is a realistic number
If you put Anderson Silva at a 10. I would say Maia’s striking is pretty poor. It’s pretty similar to Jake Shields level of abysmal striking.
BJ Penn would be at an 8.5 or 9. GSP would have an 8. Randy Couture would have a 7.5 in striking. Rampage would have an 8.
Just my $0.02.
