Pat Miletich vs. Renzo Gracie 2 in the Works?

20090112014937_patmiletich_mediumA couple of days ago, I wrote about Pat Miletich's UFC fighter profile, and speculated about his return to the UFC. MMA Fanhouse then followed up and reported that while Pat Miletich hasn't signed a contract yet, they are already trying to find a good name opponent for a possible return.

Now, according to Fighter's Only, they may already have a good fight in mind - A rematch against Renzo Gracie:

MMA legends Pat Miletich and Renzo Gracie could be heading for a rematch in the UFC’s Octagon, a US source told Fighters Only this morning.

Earlier this week, Miletich’s name was added to the fighter database on UFC.com, while Gracie recently told Brazilian sports show Sensei Sport TV that he regularly speaks to UFC president Dana White and might return to the organisation for the right fights.

According to the source, who asked not to be named, a ‘superfight’ between Gracie and Miletich is something that interests both men and has been discussed "at least informally".

Renzo Gracie has been quoted of saying that at 42, he still isn't retired and has been talking to Dana White about making his return, inside the octagon.

The two MMA legends first met three years ago at the IFL, with Renzo choking out Pat Miletich in the first round.

Was the IFL the WWE for having coaches fight or their other legends fight?

If Renzo and Pat want to fight, and Dana wants to promote it, who cares?

They’ll make more money doing the fight in the UFC than anywhere else.

Nah, UFC is making doing great business with their product.

Forget it, I clearly suffered from some kind of aneurysm while typing that.

I never said it wasn't great business

But reaching back for the worn out legends is a staple of professional wrestling in the modern era.

it's a staple of combat sports in all eras

Remember how long Hagler, Leonard, Hearns and Duran kept fighting each other long after they’d passed their respective peaks in the 80s?
Remember Holyfield and Tyson going on and on and on?
Remember Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali?
Remember Mike Tyson vs Larry Holmes?
If fans want to see fights and fighters want to get out there, they tend to happen.

UFC is a sole company though.

Unlike boxing, where any promoter can setup a fight.. the UFC is an organization that holds all the cards… like the WWE.

What is the problem with that?

by Phildo on Aug 27, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing.

Did I say there was?

You are

incorrect, sir. UFC may be the dominant organization, but I know plenty of people (who I wouldn’t even classify as ‘casual fans’, who heard that Gina Carano got her ass whooped, who watched Kimbo fight on network TV, and who will see Fedor fight on CBS.

Strikeforce is making waves, and so are other solid promotions like Bellator and Sengoku.

Ok

I didn’t think I was that hard to understand.

UFC holds all the cards = The UFC controls all of their own decisions and matchmaking.

Boxing = Decentralized. Some matches that take place in Arkansas, wouldn’t happen in New Jersey. Some promoters make matches others wouldn’t, etc.

Only if Sable distracts the ref with her clevege and Brock Lesnar comes in and hits Pat with a Steel Chair. Then screams WHO’S NEXT, then walks away to Enter Sandman.

Let me be more clear..

Rather than leave the meaning to inference.

Reaching back for worn out legends and faded stars has been a staple of professional wrestling in the modern era.

You're missing the point of all these signings.

Phil Baroni? Why sign Phil Baroni?

Because they’re stacking the organization with any recognizable name they can find so as to drown Strikeforce’s potential star roster.

Sure, Strikeforce have Fedor and Mousasi, but both of those guys have a lower profile to Joe Public than Tito does.

The UFC is planning more events and some of those will be free. Offering up nostalgia fights to get people watching what’s basically an undercard is smart business – and a cheap method to employ.

If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

I’d rather see Shamrock vs. Gracie 2 but I’ll watch this.

by MMAEruption on Aug 27, 2009 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

Frank vs Renzo 2? Frank got tooled, then he got pissed and threw two illegal knees to the renzo’s head.. Then he bitches and says, “i thought he wants to fight? not wrestle?”

or were you talking about a third fight between ken and royce? haha

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 27, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yep, Frank vs. Renzo 2. The smack talk would be epic and we might get a conclusive end to the rivalry.

by MMAEruption on Aug 27, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Wasn't their last

fight pretty much Renzo hanging on Pat’s back until he was able to sink in the choke? I was bored years ago watching this & it would seem the next one would not be different.

Fans of what though?

I mean, I respect each of these guys & what they did in their careers but they have already fought & it was boring as hell.

Garbage fight that is only being signed in order to take fights away from Strikeforce.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 27, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

Business 101 right there.

by drightler on Aug 27, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. It’s smart business. And I’m sure some fans will eat it up. I just wouldn’t want to purchase a PPV with this fight on it. Even free I would be less then excited.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 27, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t see the first one in the IFL so I wouldn’t mind seeing them fight, but it’s not exactly a selling point for me either.

Yeah, and that stupid Wendy’s opened up to take away burger sales from McDonald’s.
