Alistair Overeem to face Mighty Mo on October 17
K1Legend reports that Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, will face K-1 veteran, Mighty Mo on Golden Glory 10th Anniversary:
Alistair Overeem’s opponent for the October 17 Golden Glory 10th Anniversary event has been confirmed as K-1 veteran Mighty Mo.
...Also confirmed: Alistair’s brother Valentijn Overeem will face former WWE wrestler Daniel Puder in an MMA rules match. Some reports indicated that the main event would be Semmy Schilt v. Daniel Ghita, though Golden Glory still lists it as Schilt v. Alexei Ignashov.
Golden Glory has yet to announce the rules of the bout, but there are rumors that it will be held under MMA rules instead of K-1.
Alistair Overeem (29-11 MMA, 3-3 K-1), last fought under MMA rules on November 2008, beating 43-year-old Gary Goodridge by kimura. The Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion has yet to defend his belt since winning the title back at 2007.
Mighty Mo (3-1 MMA, 14-9 K-1), lost his last fight against Semmy Schilt via triangle choke last December.

Overeem v. Mighty Mo
Finally, the match we’ve all been clamoring for will come to fruition!
I predict Overeem will win but in so doing suffer some sort of injury that will further delay his defense of the increasingly farcical Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship.

Doubtful. Mighty Mo is about worthless these days. Slowinski owning him with leg kicks was laughable. Mighty Mo is also fairly immobile and Overeem can probably insta-can crush him inside a minute if he is smart.

I’ve heard of guys beating their opponents so badly that they break a hand or a toe, or maybe Mo starts flailing around and Overeem gets cut and, surprise, the (whatever state) athletic commission won’t license him.
It’s not like I think Mighty Mo will put up such a fight that Overeem comes out of it worse for wear. I’m expecting something fluky to happen.

This is always a problem in K-1. Breaking of a hand or hurting a leg from kicking someone’s ass badly. The problem is that Overeem is enormous, even compared to Mighty Mo in terms of height and muscle mass. Mo has just been HORRIBLE lately.

hopefully the rumors are right, and this is under MMA rules..
his MMA career needs to be more active, and if it’s K-1, Mighty Mo isn’t actually a step up from Hari and Bonjasky

No, it’s like 5 steps down from Hari or Bonjasky at this point in Mo’s career.

Fedor needs to have a tune up fight before fighting Overeem.
That idea frustrates me. You market the guy as the best heavyweight in the world (and don’t get me wrong, he is just that), then instead of putting him against the Champion in his first match, you put him against a guy that basically means nothing to all but a relative handful of MMA fans.
I could see if Brett Rogers was, say, Kimbo, and a victory would turn a lot of eyes towards Fedor, but it’s not even going to do that! What Strikeforce is essentially saying is: “we have the greatest fighter in the world, but he’s not good enough to challenge for the title just yet.” What? They can’t even argue that Overeem is still injuried, considering he’s fighting a month before Fedor is scheduled to face Brett Rogers.
It’s all very silly.

He was supposed to fight werdum at the last show but had to pull out because he hurt his hand.
Hopefully he doesn’t reinjure it on Mo’s skull. Him being out for an extended period of time will probably hurt SF’s plans for Edor.
cause that was what fedor said when Ariel Helwani asked him why he isn't facing Overeem..
but Overeem will be fighting on October, around the same time Fedor is fighting, so it’s just a lame excuse..

One of the pitfalls of open contracts is having a ‘champion’ who hasn’t defended his belt in two years.
Coker really needs to put his foot down in regards to the Strikeforce belts. He needs to put some policies in place to ensure that his champions actually defend their belts rather than running off to Japan or Hollywood and holding onto them forever.
He’s in such a tough spot though.
What’s he going to do, take away the belt? Doubt that’s really going to affect someone who hasn’t defended it in a few years. If they cared, they’d defend it.
He can’t cut anyone because zuffa would snap them up in a second.
It’s a vicious circle though. Nobody cares about the Strikeforce belts because they never have to be defended and they never are defended because the guys who have them don’t care about the belts.
Coker needs to find some way to make fans and fighters care about Strikeforce championships. I have no idea what he needs to do, but he needs to do something. The status quo is broken.
