UFC 102 Preview: Krzysztof Soszynski & Brandon Vera Clash in Light Heavyweight Action

Brandon Vera vs Krzysztof SoszynskiIn the evening's first main card bout, UFC veteran Brandon Vera (10-3) will continue his ascension up the light heavyweight ranks as he takes on former IFL fighter and TUF Season 8 fighter Krzysztof Soszynski (18-8-1). Vera is currently 2-1 since his move to the light heavyweight division with wins over Reese Andy and Mike Patt at UFN 14 and UFC 96 respectively, and dropping a split decision to Keith Jardine at UFC 89. Soszynski is coming into the bout with an impressive six-fight win streak that includes wins over former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann and former IFL fighter Andre Gusmao. He was a favorite on The Ultimate Fighter season 8, but he was defeated by finalist Vinny Magalhaes in a semi-final match-up via submission. He returned at the TUF Finale to defeat Shane Primm via kimura.

Soszynski is a Polish immigrant that moved to Winnipeg when he was 10 years old. Unlike many of today's up-and-coming talent, Soszynski actually comes from a mold of that is predominant in the earlier fighters in the UFC in a pro wrestling background. He ended up training the techniques of jiu-jitsu at a gym in Winnipeg under Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rodrigo Munduruca. He also had the benefit of working with former pro wrestler Allen "Bad News Brown" Coage, who suprisingly was an Olympic Bronze Medalist in Judo at the 1976 Olympics Games and a gold medal winner at the 1967 and 1975 Pan-Am games in Judo at Heavyweight.

From those early training sessions, Soszynski entered the world of mixed martial arts. He's mainly considered a ground and pound fighter with solid stand-up skills and good submission technique on the ground. He trains out of Team Quest with Dan Henderson, Matt Lindland, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. He widely known for using the under-utilized kimura in competition, but he's recently been showing some much more improved stand-up in his fights. The Andre Gusmao victory was a prime example of that progression.

Vera comes from a Filipino-American family that was raised in the Norfolk, Virginia area. He was a wrestling standout at his high school and earned a scholarship to Old Dominion University, but dropped out and joined the Air Force. He actually joined the wrestling team with the Air Force, but tore ligaments in his elbow in 1999. Losing use of his right arm due to the injury, he was medically discharged from the service.

After the discharge, he rehabilitated his arm enough to enter submission wrestling competitions on the East Coast that grabbed the eye of Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Lloyd Irvin. Irvin introduced him to mixed martial arts and trained him at his gym. Vera also trained in the area at gyms to add a Muay Thai base to his skill-set as well. He trained with the likes of wrestlers Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, and Matt Lindland during his stint in the Air Force at the U.S. Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs, so his Greco-Roman base isn't bad either. He holds a brown belt under Lloyd Irvin, and he was a W.K.A. Muay Thai National Champion.

Star-divide

Stylistically, Vera should have the advantage of both having better jiu-jitsu and better overall striking. He has vicious kicking power from his Muay Thai base along with devasting knees in the Thai plum. Soszynski is a major question mark in how he approaches the striking game though he did manage to dismantle Muay Thai figher Andre Gusmao standing. Vera is much more elusive in the striking department though as he's only been finished once in competition (i.e. loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85).

Brandon Vera ultimately will decide if he loses this fight. If his cut to 205 goes similar to his cut against Reese Andy, Soszynski will finish him. Being at his fourth fight at the weight class, he shouldn't have huge problems coming in with energy to spare. He has better striking, jiu-jitsu, and talent in comparison to Soszynski, so he should get the win on Saturday night.

I think Vera may be overlooking Soszynski. I can’t remember where, but i read an interview where Vera said that fighting Soszynski wouldn’t be much different than if he was still fighting Hammil. Also Soszynski has seemed to have a good focus, and might be more consistent in his fights.

One small correction
In the evening’s first main card bout, UFC veteran Brandon Vera (10-3) will continue his ascension up the light heavyweight ranks as he takes on former IFL fighter and TUF Season 8 fighter Krzysztof Soszynski (18-8-1).

I would have written as:
In the evening’s first main card bout, UFC veteran Brandon Vera (10-3) will continue find his ascension up the light heavyweight ranks halted as he takes on former IFL fighter and TUF Season 8 fighter Krzysztof Soszynski (18-8-1).

I may be biased tho.

Here’s my shot of Brandon Vera when I said “just relax and be yourself…”

He didn’t mind one bit that I snared that shot – funny, cool guy… :)

I always thought Gusmao’s standup base was capoeira. Either way, there have been many posts discussing this fight already, and I’ve said the same thing in every one – K-Sos doesn’t measure up. Unless Vera comes in really overconfident, he should cruise to the W.

That really isn’t a base in MMA. He has shown some of it in fights, but he’s mainly a Muay Thai fighter.

Gusmao isn’t MT fighter. His background is Capoeira, he’s teaching it at his gym in NYC.

by dancingChicken on Aug 26, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He used some of it in the cage, but he’s rarely ever used the “Ginga” in competition. I’ve actually only seen him do it once or twice. He may use some feints or defensive mechanisms from Capoeira.

You can sit around all day exclaiming that Gusmao is this unreal Capoeira fighter, but he’s legitimately a very good Muay Thai fighter. He KO’d Mike Ciesnolivicz both times via the plum. Capoeira, I suppose, is ultimately his base from where he started, but he doesn’t use the major techniques of Capoeira extensively in the cage. He definitely uses some defensive techniques along with feints, maybe a Bencao (front kick) or Chapa kicks.

With that all said however...

If he pulls off any type of aeriel kicks or roundhouses… then YES, that’s all Capoeira… and I’m all for that.

I'm only saying that his background is Capoeira, not Muay Thai.

I’m not trying to argue. A lot of fighters use some of MT techniques, but they are not MT fighters.

he’s only been finished once in competition (i.e. loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85).

and a controversial one at that…

Plus, Vera wasn’t even hurt by any of those shots werdum threw..

yeah, but he was hurt and covering up on one knee against the fence for a while jardine was dropping punches on him. I’d love to see a good performance from Vera, but I’m just sayin that if Sos puts a lot of pressure on him then he milt wilt a bit.

by naturalist on Aug 26, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i was talking about werdum..

i never said he never got hurt ever.. if he didn’t then he would’ve won that jardine fight.

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 26, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i know that

i wasn’t trying to dispute anything you said. I’m just not that confident that Vera can withstand Sos’s punches as he wades in for 3 rounds. I think we know that Sos’s game plan is going to be all about bringing pressure on Vera and staying up in his grill.

by naturalist on Aug 26, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL

Only if you go back and look at the slow motion of that Jardine fight, he didnt land anything significant on Vera while Vera was down on the knee.. lol

It was much like the Amir fight.. A punch of punches thrown that may have looked good at first glance, but when you see it back, nothing even landed…

by MMAuthority on Aug 26, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont have slow motion capabilities but you’re right there was nothing SIGNIFICANT that landed in that flurry. Jardine did have some success in the dirty boxing and clinch game. May not bode well for him against KSos.

by naturalist on Aug 26, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

The stoppage was legitamate; I have crystal clear shots that show Vera was not mounting an intelligent defense and thus Dan Miragliotta was well within his rights to step in. All Vera was doing was trying to shield his face and shots were getting through; with ten seconds left in the round it was just a matter of time before Werdum would have landed a potentially very damaging shot to Vera’s head.

What people forget is that the ref’s job is to ensure the safety of the fighters; Dan done exactly that. Turtling up and trying weakly to shield yourself from a G&P assault is not the best way to indicate to a ref that you’re in the clear… not matter how much time is left on the clock.

Here, in this shot, Vera is not shielding his face at all as Werdum commences to rain down blows.

And this is a shot from the exact moment of the stoppage; again, shots are clearly passing Vera’s defense and if the assautlt had gone on unchecked, Vera could have ended up with all sorts of injuries as a result

So there you go; I never saw the PPV to know what this looked like on camera but, post event, both Dan and I agreed that the stoppage was legit from the way we saw it.

Remember: fighter safety first and foremost.

by VikingPhotography on Aug 27, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i like the photos...

but i’ve watched the fight several times on video, and there wasn’t one solid shot that landed, and werdum was hardly doing any damage.. so yeah, Vera was still pretty safe..

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 28, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We've all seen shots that look "soft"

…yet end up knocking some guy out. Seth Petruzelli vs. Kimbo Slice and Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin are just two that spring to mind right away. You don’t need to drop a “bomb”; you just need shots to cause enough cumulative trauma for the brain to shut off and cause a lights-out.

Should Miragliotta have let Werdum punish vera for the additional ten seconds on the clock? Vera seemed to think so… but what IF Fabricio (during that extra ten seconds of Vera not showing much defense) had caused seriousl injury to Brandon? Miragliotta would have been lionised for not stepping sooner…

yes there are examples of shots that look weak but then the opponent got real hurt.. but this obviously wasn’t the case here cause vera wasn’t even hurt a bit.. watch the fight again. he hardly took any damage..

Should Miragliotta have let Werdum punish vera for the additional ten seconds on the clock?

again dude, he wasn’t getting punished..

Vera wasn’t getting out of that full mount, but he was sure as hell not taking any unnecessary shots there cause werdum wasn’t hardly landing any decent shots.. If Vera looked even a bit shaken up, i’d agree with you, but this wasn’t the case..

people even argue the stoppages like the one of Amir, where he did get knocked down and shaken up, then he took a couple of weak shots after… that’s controversial because he surely would’ve been able to recover, but it was a wayyyyyyyyy more legit stoppage cause he did hurt amir, while vera just got mounted and werdum wasn’t doing much with it.

by judonerd on Aug 26, 2009 2:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ditto

I’d like to see Vera either back up his talk or Ksos to become a legitimate contender, which i never predicted after seeing him on TUF. Likewise though, i’m surprised nothing has come of Vinny.

I feel like every positive skill set Ksos has is one-upped by Vera, with the exception maybe of pure power. Vera will use his wrestling to keep the fight standing and catch Ksos with a knee, and then finish him. The only way i see Sos winning is evading the enslaught en route to catching vera with his kimura, except that Vera has definately trained the defense of that submission amply in camp i would assume.

I like Ksos, but i think everyone is giving him too much credit, and Vera is going to be too much.

I have a hard time figuring out Sozynski.

On the one hand, he is on a nice little run versus dregs of the LHW division. OTOH, he has a bunch of losses on his record to solid but unspectacular fighters. I can’t figure out of his current success is true Kang-like career rebirth or just a product of favorable matchups.

Personally, I’ll be rooting for Vera, since I still think he has a world of potential whereas Sozynski seems more like the career gatekeeper type. Hopefully, Vera can finally put the Dion mess behind him and start whooping ass again.

by Steve4192 on Aug 26, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The knock on K-Sos was always that he didn’t fight smart, that he’d start throwing like crazy and get tagged badly or otherwise overextend himself and pay for it. Lately he’s fighting much more within himself and actually seems to have a real gameplan (a rarity for Team Quest fighters!). Chalk it up to experience; still, I think Vera’s natural talent far outstrips K-Sos’ meaning Soszynski has a much lower “ceiling”… But potential doesn’t mean a thing until one reaches it.

I appreciate the fact that Vera does not take himself too seriously and is a nice guy. He always makes goofy faces and comments (Especially about holding both belts, although that one wasn’t intentionally goofy!!).

I respect anyone who gets in the cage, but I feel he has made excuses. He can hide behind the weight cut excuse or anything else he wants. The only time I have seen him look remotely impressive was against Mir.

I believe this is Krzysztofs night, and he will get the KO.

that's fair

but when has krzysztof ever looked impressive

by yngjzy on Aug 26, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

IMO yngizy Krzysztof has looked good TWICE since his stint on TUF. An excellent Kimura on Brian Stann, and a great KO over Gusmao.

Sure, they may not be top tier, but they are good enough fighters to be in the organisation, and he is finishing what is being put in front of him. If Vera pulls it out I will sit up and take notice once more, but I am expecting a Krzysztof Soszynski victory :-)

by Rob J Nathan on Aug 27, 2009 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brian Stann, lol..

The guy should be fighting Houston Alexander..

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 27, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if you going to count wins against guys like Stann as impressive, then Vera has a bunch of those too. Prior to his contract dispute, he was absolutely murdering guys with similar credentials.

by Steve4192 on Aug 27, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Steve4192, I said he looked good, not “Impressive” and as I said, he can only beat what is put in front of him, and he did that.

Vera has not looked “Good”, for quite some time, and as you know in this business, most of the time, you get judged on your last performance only.
