The Case for Randy Couture
With Mir having already written the script for starching Nogueira, watch for Couture to use his wrestling to keep the fight standing and rely on his boxing from there. Whether or not playing the same tune as Mir works for Couture will depend on just how much of his old self Nogueira has rediscovered in his eight months away from the cage. In a sport where nostalgia runs deep but counts for little, Nogueira has to prove he still has something left to offer after already giving so much.
...
The Bottom Line: Nogueira fans should start practicing their cringing, as Couture is going to turn this into a one-sided dirty boxing display that the Brazilian won’t be able to do much of anything about. No miracle submissions this time around, as Nogueira ends up getting saved by the referee’s sense of compassion but not before taking two rounds worth of Couture’s old-school bullying.
I still consider reflexive speed to be a major factor. Nogueira has said he's back down into the low 230lbs for this fight, which is realistically where he needs to be in order to use speed and clever guard play to have any sort of attacking guard. But Couture will be at least ten pounds lighter and does not have much if any strength disadvantage. And unlike Nogueira, his reflexes haven't (seemingly) been nearly as compromised from years of beatings. He does, however, still appear to have the reflexes and submission awareness to read Nogueira's set-ups and subsequently defend the attempt. Will he be able to sit up out of Nogueira's triangle as Fedor Emelianenko was able to do? Maybe, maybe not. But with Nogueira's apparent physical half-life closing in on his professional ability, he may not have to.
Some suggest Couture's defensive stalling against Jacare at L.A. Sub-X doesn't portend much for this fight, but they'd be wrong. Although Jacare cannot match Nogueira's strength, he does have a much more active guard than Nogueira and far more explosiveness. Where Couture was able to avoid most submissions, keep a strong base (this is so critical and so underrated as one of Couture's talents) and hold out on attempts against Jacare, he'll do even more against Nogueira while adding short but accumulative punishment the whole time.
And remember: this is a three round fight, not five. Five rounds of boxing/defending the submissions against Nogueira is a tall order. Three rounds is a much more manageable affair.

So basically there are a number of people counting Noguiera out.

You’re absolutely right. At the very least, it tells us that Couture has the intellect to recognize submissions, defend transitions, and understand the dynamics of jiu-jitsu that would put him into some real danger against a bigger guy like Nogueira.

yeah sorry guys Nog isn't done yet
I think everybody is looking at his poor showing against Mir way to closely, he was previously ill and had a bad night. Also and forgive me Luke but the staff is usually pretty off on their main event predictions if memory serves so I’m going Nog FTW.

-3, you really think theres some way that Nog can beat Couture? Couture, the guy who took down Lesnar and actually made the vanilla gorilla bleed?
I know that doesnt really apply here, but Randy is tailor made to beat Nog… better footwork, striking, impossible to take down, almost impossible to submit, and better cardio. There isn’t really a single thing Nog can do to beat Randy with the exception of a miracle sub, which would really be a miracle because a MUCH stronger and younger Gonzaga couldn’t.
If you gave reason why you think that, i may give more thought to your point, but when your main reasoning for giving a pick is to pick against the staff of BE, youre building castles on sand

I'm on this site instead on taking notes in my International Relations class
Forgive me for being brief, but I just think people are overestimating Couture and underestimating Nog, last December nobody gave Mir a shot, and now we have to deal with Mir’s gigantic head thinking he is amazing boxer. I just see Nog pulling it off I don’t know how just call it a gut feeling.

I guess nobody is allowed to bet against Randy...
… apparently anyone who does is told they are fundamentally wrong. Whatever.
take it a little bit more personally
All i said was that you should have a better reason then everyone on BE is picking Couture and they’re usually wrong.

And since most main events draw different predictions from different members of staff, I’m not sure who “BE staff” is supposed to be.

Yeah, I’m still undecided on this fight. Regardless, I think people think this fight is closer than most on staff seem to.

OK b4 people get angry
Dude I said that not TDITZ, and I was half kidding. Do you know Randy personally or something, because you seem a little upset about my comment. All the staff here are very good at what they do I wasn’t taking a swipe at anybody, I was just making an observation and I just feel like despite all the proof in front of me I disagree about the outcome of the fight. I’m also basing on my opinion on nothing but my gut feeling, so I may be wrong but who cares two of the greatest heavyweights are going to fight on Saturday. This may have been a better match if it was a few years earlier, but I’m looking forward to an interesting fight.

See…I am looking at everything from 2007 onward. I have seen him slow down considerably (and this is my favorite fighter in the history of MMA mind you). Yeah, the mir fight probably wasn’t an accurate representation of where he is now. But when you combine that with the third herring fight and the sylvia fight…I don’t see him beating Couture.

He didn’t look remarkable against Herring and Sylvia BUT he pulled those victories out of no-where. he deserves some serious credit for those fights.
Note: Herring is remarkably durable in 42 fights he’s only been stopped 4 times via (T)KO. Lesnar could not stop with his control and pound-away strategy.

oh i know...
Herris is massively underrated. And yes, Nog deserves credit for the wins, but I think Randy isn’t going to fall into one of those “I’m winning…oops I got caught” situations.
Maybe I’m wrong. Honestly nothing would make me happier than Nog making a big run again.

I believe it hinges on the fact that Nog gets beat up too bad in the early rounds and in a three round fight i dont think he can win two rounds. I believe that Randy will control the better part of the fight and towards the end Nog may get one good sub attempt on Randy but in the end lose via UD. 5 round fight may be different, but three rounds i think its randys fight
Bad fight for Nog
I’m a big fan of both guys. But I don’t see how Nog has much of chance in this one. Couture can dictate where this fight will take place. And as said above, even if it goes to the ground, Couture can withstand the submission attempts. Also, I’m going to say this Couture’s last fight at heavy weight. Machida and Silva are two tempting apples.
Yet ANOTHER Pro-Couture Article..
The only article questioning Randy at all that I have seen here is the one asking if his divorce will be a distraction. Does nobody see the very real possibility that Couture may be done for?
I just don’t understand why he is such a heavy favorite, other than being popular. I’ll eat my words if I am wrong, but I just don’t see Couture dominating this fight at all.
“Does nobody see the very real possibility that Couture may be done for?”
I’m sure some people do. There’s enough evidence to convince one’s self of either position, quite honestly. But my reading of the available tea leaves is that Nogueira has been entirely unimpressive since the third Heath Herring fight. Couture, by contrast, has looked capable even in losing efforts. None of anyone’s analysis is flawless, but the judgment call leans me in one clear direction.

luke, i missed the news on Nog getting KOed in training, but how many times has that supposedly happened?
Unless Nog is on the beginning of some career resurgence, he just looks too weathered to beat Couture.
by Austin Martin on Aug 26, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I suppose Nog has looked pretty bad...
… but for some reason I have the sneaking suspicion that Randy might just not be ‘Randy’ anymore. Plus, I think people are overrating his sub defense.
That being said, if Nog doesn’t beat a 46 year old Randy, I don’t see any reason for him to fight in the UFC anymore.
Its Randy though...
46 years old is significant in reference to any other fighter but Randy has shown that he is still a TOP contender. I think they’re an even match. A submission win by Nogueira would not surprise me nor would it be a “miracle” however, I think Couture will win based on his careful game planning. He has been impressive which gives me expectations whereas Nogueira can only give me hope :-/
Being competitiv and winning a round are two different things. Lesnar won Round 1.

Thank you myth buster.
Let’s put things into perspective.
Brock Lesnar only has a total of 5 professional MMA fights, 4 in the UFC. Touting Randy’s competitive effort against Lesnar is just like many fans attempting to validate Dan Henderson as a contender by harping about his 1st round against Anderson Silva. Dam actually won the round but didn’t do anything but lay on him, give him a few punches and cover his mouth.
According to CompuStrike stats . . . Randy didn’t do so much against Lesnar, he didn’t score one takedown. I need to watch that again because I believe he got at least 1. But the big difference is in the striking.

I rewatched the fight and think Randy did a much better job against Lesnar than i had previously thought. He clinched well, had great footwork and head movement and caught Lesnar. Then in the second round, we’ve all seen the right that put Randy down.
My point is that he cannot be that far removed from someone who was putting up a fight against a man who had 60 lbs of solid muscle and 8 inches of reach on him. Nog, on the other hand, looked far less than impressive against Mir, and is rumored to have gotten KOed repeatedly in camp. They’re both legends, but I don’t see Nog pulling out a miracle sub in the third round, because the later rounds are all randy.
by Austin Martin on Aug 26, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Personally...
It’s honestly too close to call either way..
I dont buy into the rumor mills of who’s getting KO’d in training.. I’ve trained long enough to know that even top guys get KO’d in training otherwise they’re not being pushed hard enough by the right people..
Randy doesn’t have KO power. Nog can take a lot of punishment.. Those are the only 2 real defining factors at this point.. Randy is 46 at regardless of how people feel about it, the honest truth is that age has shown a decline, which is just basic human nature.. So what Randy managed to wrestle with Brock, that’s completely irrelevant to this topic. Randy got TKO as the end result. So what Mir TKO’d Nog, Nog had staph infection and probably should have pulled out of that fight.
What it boils down to is that they’re pretty close matched in size & skill & the only thing we have to really go on is how those skills stack up against each other. Will Randy’s wrestling and clinch work out do Nog’s boxing and submissions ?? Let’s wait and see…

![Chris Tuchscherer talks about the lack of answers he received from Oregon State Athletic Commission:
"I asked the doctor many times what would happen if I can't continue. 'Is it a no-contest? What happens here?' And the doctor and the ref couldn't tell me. They kept passing the buck on to each other out there, so no one could tell me what was going on."
About that time, Lesnar came cageside to check on Tuchscherer. The heavyweight champ first inquired on his training partner's health, at which time Tuchscherer told him he thought, "My [testicle] is up inside my body."
