Lyoto Machida: "Striking is Like Chess"

Striking always was defined as a lottery, once that one single punch can end the fight, but Lyoto guarantees this concept is not true anymore:

"It just doesn’t make sense to me. Striking is like chess, where I put all my technique. Sometimes I make the guy walk for where I want, I make him attack me like I want to counter attack, sometimes I leave my leg open for him to kick and then I pull his leg and kick him"

does anyone think walking out to wu tang clan would be perfect walk in music for lyoto, excerpt from “da mystery of chess boxing”

“The game of chess, is like a swordfight
You must think first, before you move
Wu style is immensely strong, and immune to nearly any weapon
When it’s properly used, it’s almost invincible”

by cookiemonster1508 on Aug 25, 2009 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

That would be awesome.

by Bandaka on Aug 25, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think he should choose from one of two options:

1) You’re the Best – From the Karate Kid

2) The Mortal Kombat theme

Mortal Kombat? Heresy!
This should be his entrance music.

If fighting is chess, Machida must be the the chessmaster.

I see Machida and Anderson as the new breed of MMA champions. We saw the raw power with Hughes and Chuck. Then both were passed by by new MMA stars with super talents. Now we have people who have turned it into a deadly art form.

by Riney on Aug 25, 2009 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

i think Cung Le would be on that list too

If he weren’t 38 and looking to be the next Jet Li.

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Cung Le has super talent? Thats something new…

by dancingChicken on Aug 25, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Cung Le could potentially go down as a legend in MMA. Instead, he’d rather be a B-list actor. Worse, even. I just don’t get it.

I love me some Sexyama!

Yeah, he’s pretty awesome. His record is great.. i wish he would fight more.

by ontite on Aug 25, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

i think

its a bit of a disservice to overlook the skills that both Hughes and Chuck employed during their primes as if it was all simply physical strength… Chuck had great defensive wrestling, good kickboxing, and fast reflexes… Hughes had dominant wrestling, good ground and pound, and good offensive grappling……….

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.

hughes

was also dating jesus, which probably helped him out a bit.

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Loot, ditto . . . let’s not rewrite history. Although GSP totally owned Hughes in their last two fights, let’s not forget that Hughes clearly beat him the first time via submission. Lidell, what more can you say. While many keyboard fans disrespect his legacy . . . fighters know what’s up.

It's not like either are done too

but fans keep talking about them like they are. Liddell lost to Rampage, Shogun, and Rashad

Hughes lost to GSP and Alves.

IMO losing to top 10 opponents in your division after the age of 35 doesn’t mean you’re washed up

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

People forget about that armbar Hughes put on GSP. That was an awesome setup. He definately had the advantage on the ground in that fight.

by Rabbit915 on Aug 25, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He was also losing that round.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

yeah, its funny how people forget that part!?!?:-/

So being utterly impossible to take down doesn’t take any sort of talent? Chuck is also pretty accurate with his punches.

Keep firing Assholes!

ZE GOGGLES! ZAY DO NOZING!!!!

by Ubernoober on Aug 25, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing about Chuck is he is great at what he does, but he depends very much on his reflexes. His other skills are great, but he is not well rounded enough to make up for the aging. Hughes, I think, can get back on track. Even if GSP has his number he can be meaningful in the WW div. I think they both have the issue of not getting out of there routine and branching out to changing there game even a little.

by szucconi on Aug 25, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Chuck relied on his chin alot too. He baits you into throwing a punch, eats yours and hits you back harder when you’re open.

BJ does it alot too.

Is there anything that isn't like chess these days?

that has got to be one of the most tired sports lines.

by David_ on Aug 25, 2009 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah they should change it up by saying

“Striking is like playing connect four, only way more complex”.

by Dooda on Aug 25, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

“striking is not that easy” would suffice

by David_ on Aug 25, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Alot of things Lyoto says are cliche.

Fixed.

Well, they arent cliche to him. Hes never heard them before. He probaly thinks hes delivering insightful and heartfelt comments.

by Rabbit915 on Aug 25, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

although, the like chess is the only cliche bit..

this i found real interesting.

Sometimes I make the guy walk for where I want, I make him attack me like I want to counter attack, sometimes I leave my leg open for him to kick and then I pull his leg and kick him"

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 25, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It happens everywhere, not just in US or to US based athletes.

Oh cry me a river……

since you like cliche sayings so much.

I never see why people get so bent out of shape for the smallest most insignificant things. Me thinks ya gonna have a disappointing life.

Tell me about it! It’s just how the cookie crumbles I guess.

Striking is like TENNIS

You can sit back and ponder moves in chess, hence the bjj comparisons. I’ve always felt that striking is like tennis, where its still about cutting angles and getting inside, moving left and right, putting your opponent where you want them.

It’s like eating a pomegranate. You have to pick it apart and leave the scraps in the compost.
